For a quick download-focused check, use FAST.com. For a broader view that includes latency, jitter, and packet loss, try Cloudflare Speed Test. M-Lab NDT offers a documented single-connection test, while Speedtest by Ookla can use multiple parallel connections. They measure related but different things, so no one result should be treated as a definitive reading of your ISP service.
Which free internet speed test should you use?
| Test | Best for | What it reports or emphasizes | How it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAST.com | A quick, simple estimate, especially of download speed | Download by default; expanded results include upload and unloaded and loaded latency | Uses downloads and uploads to Netflix servers; designed for individual general use, not enterprise service certification |
| Cloudflare Speed Test | Connection quality beyond headline throughput | Download, upload, latency, jitter, packet loss, and scores oriented to streaming, gaming, and video calls | Uses predefined data-block sizes and does not try to saturate the connection |
| M-Lab Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) | Documented diagnostics and publicly available measurement data | Download, upload, and other connection-quality data points | Attempts to transfer as much data as possible for ten seconds in each direction over one connection |
| Speedtest by Ookla | A familiar test with a multi-thread measurement method | Download, upload, and ping | Its methodology describes up to four HTTP threads for download and upload, with more than two used when needed |
These services are free to use, but the results are not directly interchangeable: each tests a particular route from your device to a selected server using its own method.

What a speed test actually measures
A speed test measures performance between the device running it and a particular test server at a particular moment. Its result includes more than the ISP access line: server location, internet routing, browser performance, local Wi-Fi, and other activity on the device or network can all affect it. Cloudflare cautions that no speed test, including its own, is a definitive measure of ISP service.
Download and upload throughput describe how much data can move, but they do not capture every aspect of connection quality. Latency is the time it takes data to travel; jitter describes variation in latency; packet loss means some data does not arrive. Loaded latency measures responsiveness while the connection is carrying traffic. These details can matter for interactive uses: gaming is sensitive to latency, while video calls and remote work may also be affected by jitter or packet loss.

How the four tests differ
FAST.com: quick, download-first results
FAST.com is intended to make a simple, fast estimate, with download speed front and center. Select Show more info to see upload speed and unloaded and loaded latency; Netflix describes the difference between those latency readings as bufferbloat. The test uses downloads and uploads to Netflix servers. Netflix says it works in a browser on phones, laptops, and smart TVs around the world. It is aimed at individual general use, not enterprise certification.
Cloudflare: more connection-quality measures
Cloudflare Speed Test reports download and upload along with latency, jitter, packet loss, and scores for streaming, gaming, and video calls. Its technical explanation says the test sends predefined data-block sizes rather than trying to saturate the connection. Read its throughput as an estimate produced by that method, not a guaranteed maximum line rate.

Cloudflare says a test can consume up to 200 MB, so keep that potential usage in mind if your plan is metered. The service says it receives the connecting IP address, estimates city and country and the ISP’s autonomous system number (ASN), and truncates IPv4 addresses to /24 and IPv6 addresses to /48. It says anonymized measurement information is shared with measurement partners without sharing the IP address with them.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesM-Lab NDT: a single-connection diagnostic
M-Lab NDT tests download and upload using one connection to an M-Lab server. M-Lab says it attempts to transfer as much data as possible for ten seconds in each direction; other popular tests may use multiple connections. Server location, route changes, and test timing can affect its result, so M-Lab recommends looking at repeated tests over time rather than drawing conclusions from one run.

- If you are not satisfied with this Ethernet cable tester, please feel free to contact us. We will solve all your problems well.
M-Lab says the test uses synthetic traffic, not private browsing activity, and its policies prohibit collecting private user traffic. It does collect and publicly release measurement data, including the ISP-assigned IP address, test time, and technical fields; M-Lab says raw data is stored indefinitely. Not collecting browsing history is therefore not the same as collecting no data.
Ookla Speedtest: a multi-thread approach
Speedtest by Ookla reports download, upload, and ping. Its methodology describes small preliminary transfers to select test sizes, throughput sampling, and up to four HTTP threads during download and upload; it may use more than two threads when needed and averages selected samples to calculate results. Ookla recommends a current browser in connection with thread limitations in older browsers. A multi-thread result can differ from a single-connection test without either one necessarily being faulty.

Why speed tests disagree
Two tests can produce different readings because they may connect to servers in different places, follow different routes, use different numbers of connections, or send different amounts and sizes of data. Routes can change between runs. Your browser, Wi-Fi signal, device, and other household activity also shape what an end-user test measures.
To make a comparison more useful, keep the conditions as consistent as possible:

How to choose the right result for your needs
- Checking a download problem: Start with FAST.com for a quick estimate, then use another service if you need more context.
- Checking calls, gaming, or responsiveness: Look beyond download speed. Cloudflare includes jitter and packet loss; FAST.com exposes unloaded and loaded latency in its expanded view.
- Comparing measurement methods: NDT’s single-connection approach and Ookla’s multi-thread approach answer related, but not identical, questions.
- Working with a metered plan: Account for Cloudflare’s notice that one test may consume up to 200 MB.
- Checking a household connection: A result from a browser over Wi-Fi includes the device and local wireless link as well as the path to the test server. It does not isolate the ISP line.
When a formal speed-test process applies
For the U.S. Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Model Challenge Process, NTIA’s November 2023 checklist lists Ookla, M-Lab, Cloudflare, and Netflix/Fast.com as approved applications for that process. It calls for the median of three tests taken on separate days, with tests no more than 60 days old at the start of the challenge period. Among the accepted methods it describes is testing on a laptop or desktop close to the residential gateway. These are rules for that specific process, not universal certification standards; anyone preparing a challenge should follow the current governing requirements.
