For remote screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to consider: it removes common consent banners and overlays before capture, and bills only clean shots. HTML/CSS to Image and ScreenshotOne are hosted alternatives with published free allowances; html2canvas is a browser-side library for exporting the current page, but it reconstructs the image rather than taking a literal screenshot.

| ScreenshotOne | Hosted URL screenshots, with HTML rendering and PDF among its advertised features | 100 screenshots per month free, per its pricing page observed October 3, 2026 | Its page says successful renders not served from cache count toward quota; confirm the input mode and current plan details. Service and pricing information |
| html2canvas | Exporting a selected element from the page open in the user’s browser | Open-source library; the project documentation describes no hosted-service quota | Builds a DOM-based representation, not a literal screenshot; CSS support and cross-origin assets can affect output. Project documentation |
| Browserless | Potentially relevant to teams already using browser automation | Not stated in the reviewed primary-source material | Verify current pricing, deployment options, and screenshot API from Browserless before choosing it. Comparison article reviewed |
For ScreenshotNeo’s paid plans, the listed options are Starter at $5 for 3,000 shots, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. These are the stated plan terms, not a claim that another service is more expensive for every workload.

What “HTML to image” can mean
Render HTML and CSS you supply
A hosted renderer receives markup and styles, runs the render remotely, and returns an image, PDF, or hosted result depending on the service. This suits generated cards, badges, invoices, previews, and repeatable server workflows. HTML/CSS to Image documents either an html or a url input, not both in the same request, with optional CSS. Its documented output formats are PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF. Authentication uses HTTP Basic with an API ID and API key, so credentials belong on a server, not in browser JavaScript or a public repository. HTML/CSS to Image API documentation
Capture a live URL
A URL screenshot service loads a page in a vendor-managed browser. It is usually the more direct fit for monitoring a site, producing previews from public pages, or automating captures without operating a browser yourself. Check whether the service accepts URLs, HTML, or both; whether it can capture a viewport or the full page; and how it treats cache hits, failed navigation, and output retention. A successful render may consume quota even if you reuse the result, depending on the provider’s terms.
#1 Best Overall
Export an element from the open page
html2canvas reads the current page’s DOM and styles and paints a canvas representation in the visitor’s browser. It avoids a hosted rendering API for an in-app export, but its output can differ from what the browser actually displayed. The project explicitly says it does not make an actual screenshot and that accuracy depends on information available from the page. Its supported CSS is limited to what the library implements; cross-origin images may be tainted or unavailable unless a proxy or compatible asset configuration is used. It is not a Node.js server-rendering tool. html2canvas documentation
Which converter fits your workflow?
Generating a card, thumbnail, or social image from a template
Use a hosted HTML/CSS renderer when the server owns the markup and needs repeatable outputs. HTML/CSS to Image specifically supports HTML/CSS generation and templates; its free plan’s five-template limit and lack of media uploads may matter if designs rely on uploaded assets. For a renderer that also accepts a URL and offers image or PDF capture, compare ScreenshotNeo’s options in its API documentation with the exact workflow you need.
Taking screenshots of pages on a site
Choose a URL-based hosted API when the source is a live page and rendering should happen remotely. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try for this workflow because it accepts a URL in one GET request, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and only bills clean shots. Its response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers to identify the result and billing outcome. ScreenshotOne is another hosted option; its vendor page says it offers HTML rendering and PDF and counts successful renders not served from cache toward its free allowance.
Adding an export button to a page the user is viewing
Try html2canvas if the element is already rendered in the browser and avoiding a server call matters. Validate the exact markup, browser, fonts, and external assets you support. If the result must match the browser pixel for pixel, do not assume a DOM reconstruction will be sufficient; test a real capture workflow against representative pages instead.

Running scheduled or high-volume captures
Estimate the number of successful renders rather than comparing free-tier headline numbers alone. Check each provider’s cache and failure accounting, output retention, concurrency or async-job support, and how credentials are secured. If your team already operates Puppeteer or Playwright, Browserless may be worth evaluating, but the reviewed information does not establish its current terms; verify them directly before budgeting.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-call hosted capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns the image. The example saves the response as WebP; replace the URL with the page you want to capture.

Test these details before adopting a tool
- Fonts and assets: Render pages using the actual web fonts, external images, and CSS your production markup depends on. Cross-origin restrictions can make browser-side captures incomplete.
- Viewport and page length: Check both viewport-sized and full-page output, including lazy-loaded images and content below the fold where applicable.
- Formats and downstream use: Confirm whether you need PNG, JPG, WebP, or PDF and whether the service returns bytes, a link, or both.
- Quota and billing rules: Compare monthly volume, cache treatment, failed-render treatment, and what happens when a free allowance is exhausted. HCTI’s published starting prices observed October 3, 2026 were $14/month Basic, $149/month Pro, and $749/month Scale; its pricing page varies image volume by selection, so these figures do not imply a particular quota. HCTI pricing
- Credentials and retention: Keep API keys server-side, and check how generated files are stored, shared, and retained before sending private page content to a hosted service.
- Failure handling: Decide what your application should do for a timeout, unsupported page, blocked asset, or quota error rather than assuming every request yields a usable image.
Troubleshooting common failures
The output is missing an image or font
For html2canvas, inspect whether the asset is cross-origin and whether the remote server permits it to be loaded for canvas use; configure a proxy or use same-origin assets when needed. For a hosted renderer, verify that the URL is reachable from the service and that fonts or assets are publicly accessible or supplied through a supported mechanism.
The result does not match the browser view
First check viewport dimensions, device scale, delayed content, and font loading. With html2canvas, differences may also reflect unsupported CSS or its DOM-reconstruction approach. Use a browser-rendered hosted capture when the task requires capturing a live page rather than painting a DOM approximation.

An HTML/CSS to Image request fails
Send either html or url, not both, and check HTTP Basic credentials: the API ID is the username and the API key is the password. Its FAQ distinguishes exhausted image credits from management-operation throttling; both can return HTTP 429, so inspect the response and current documentation rather than treating every 429 as the same limit. Confirm the page loads normally without interactive sign-in, bot verification, or network restrictions, and allow for client-rendered content before capture. Check the API’s page verdict or error response and avoid counting an unsuccessful result as proof the URL is permanently unavailable. ScreenshotNeo reports verdict and billing headers with each response, which helps distinguish a clean result from a non-billed failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is html2canvas the same as taking a browser screenshot?
No. It renders an image from DOM and style information in the current browser page; unsupported CSS and cross-origin assets can change the result.
Can html2canvas run on a Node.js server?
No. It is intended for browser-side DOM capture, not Node.js server rendering.
Which free option has the largest stated monthly allowance here?
ScreenshotNeo lists 1,000 shots per month free with no card. The other stated offers are ScreenshotOne’s 100 screenshots and HTML/CSS to Image’s 50 images per month; provider terms can change.
