For a free, repeatable command-line setup, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a text-file playlist in sequence and loop it into YouTube Live. The script is only one part of a 24/7 broadcast: your media files must be compatible, your encoder settings must meet YouTube’s current guidance, and the computer or server must stay online. India does not require a special FFmpeg recipe based on the platform guidance available; test upload stability and power at your actual location.
Which free option should you use?
| Option | Best fit | What you need to manage |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo (cloud service) | Creators who want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping a computer at home running. | Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. It is not a free service beyond its first free day; plan details are below. |
| FFmpeg with a concat playlist | People comfortable with shell commands who want a lightweight, free-software workflow. | Media compatibility, playlist edits, path escaping, logs, process restarts, and monitoring. |
| ffplayout | People who need playlist management, filler clips, and service-oriented playout features. | Installation and host requirements; check the project’s current compatibility before deploying. |
| Local computer or Linux VPS | A local machine suits a reliable home setup; a VPS suits someone who wants a remote host. | A local machine depends on home power and connectivity. A VPS adds recurring infrastructure cost and depends on provider network and region. |
For a free script, start with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. FFmpeg describes it as reading files and directives from a text file and demuxing them one after another as though their packets had been muxed together (FFmpeg formats documentation). It does not normalize files or provide a complete broadcast operations system.

1. Prepare a playlist text file
Create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt. Put one media file on each line using the file directive. For example:

file '/srv/stream/video-01.mp4'
file '/srv/stream/video-02.mp4'
file '/srv/stream/video-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Spaces and special characters in paths require correct quoting or escaping; the concat demuxer has its own syntax, so do not assume ordinary shell quoting alone makes every filename safe. Renaming files to simple names can avoid avoidable parsing problems.
2. Check the files before using them together
The concat demuxer expects corresponding streams across inputs to match, including codecs and time base. It shifts timestamps according to each file’s duration; if streams within a file have different lengths, gaps or artifacts can result. Check video dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, audio presence, and duration. Convert files to a consistent format when needed rather than assuming a playlist will make them uniform. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the format’s constraints.
3. Loop the list and send it to YouTube
A representative command-line pattern is below. Replace the placeholder URL with the ingest address and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. This is an example to adapt, not a tested command for every media set or FFmpeg build:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
The loop option repeats the input list; it does not repair incompatible files. The sample encoder values are oriented to H.264 1080p30, not a universal preset. Check the input and the current YouTube recommendations before choosing a resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. If your build or chosen input workflow handles looping differently, confirm it with a short test before relying on it unattended.
Keep the stream key private. Do not commit it in a script repository, expose it in screenshots, or leave it in logs that others can read. Prefer a protected environment variable or a local configuration file with restrictive permissions, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
Set YouTube ingest settings to match the stream
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. Use the values in YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate table, since recommendations may change.

| Example H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate, not minimum upload-speed guarantees. The table includes other resolutions and frame rates; choose a target that matches your source and leave upload headroom for sustained operation. A fast speed test alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable all day.

Choose between a script, ffplayout, a home PC, and a VPS
Use a hand-written script for a simple sequence
FFmpeg plus a concat list is the smallest moving-parts option for a fixed playlist. It is a good fit if you are comfortable editing text files and handling media and process failures yourself. Playlist changes, logs, monitoring, restarts, and stream-key security remain your responsibility.

Consider ffplayout for fuller playout management
ffplayout’s project repository describes infinite playlist looping, filler clips, editable playlists, RTMP output, and Linux system-service operation. The project currently states that it needs FFmpeg v7.0+ development libraries and recommends four dedicated threads and 3 GB RAM for 720p. These are project-stated requirements and recommendations, not independent performance measurements; check the repository for current release compatibility before installing.
Decide where the process will run
A local computer avoids VPS rental but needs dependable power, network, storage, and a machine that remains on. A Linux VPS moves the process away from home; it adds recurring cost and does not remove the need to check sustained upload, region, and provider reliability. No universal minimum bandwidth or India-specific threshold is established here, so test the connection from the host you actually plan to use.

Keep a 24/7 stream operational
A looping command is not an uptime guarantee. Plan for failures in the media, encoder process, internet connection, host, and YouTube ingest, and check the actual stream rather than only whether FFmpeg is still running.
- Test transitions: run through every playlist item, especially file boundaries, and check for black video, silent sections, timestamp jumps, or encoder errors.
- Use a private or unlisted test: verify the received stream and audio in Live Control Room before making it public.
- Capture useful logs: retain enough FFmpeg output to identify input, encoding, and connection failures, while ensuring the stream key is not exposed.
- Monitor both process and broadcast: a live FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Arrange checks and alerts appropriate to your host.
- Plan recovery: a supervisor such as systemd can restart a failed process on a Linux host, but repeated restarts will not fix bad media, invalid credentials, or a broken network path.
- Keep the source library available: confirm that playlist paths remain valid after reboot and that the host has enough storage and permission to read every file.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a file on your computer does not establish the right to broadcast it. Before looping music, devotional recordings, films, or other content, confirm that you hold the required rights for the recording and composition and that your permission covers live streaming in the relevant territories. A continuous pre-recorded broadcast can still receive copyright claims or be interrupted.
Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions. Reused or repetitive material may affect monetization even where you have permission to use it. Review the current YouTube live-streaming guidance and applicable channel policies before scheduling a long-running stream; do not treat a successful test as policy approval.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits or reports an invalid input around a filename | Incorrect path, concat-list syntax, or unescaped special characters. | Check that the file exists and simplify the filename; correct the concat list’s quoting and escaping. |
| Playback breaks or shows a glitch at a file boundary | Inputs have mismatched streams, timestamps, or durations. | Compare codecs, time bases, frame rates, dimensions, audio streams, and durations; normalize the files as needed. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or bitrate problem | Encoder settings do not match current guidance, or the connection cannot sustain the chosen output. | Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, bitrate, and ingest URL against YouTube’s current settings page; test from the intended host. |
| The stream stops when the computer or connection drops | The process depends on a local machine or network that is no longer available. | Use a host with dependable power and connectivity, or move the workload to a remote host; add process supervision and monitoring. |
| FFmpeg is running but viewers cannot see a healthy live stream | The process may be alive while ingest has failed or the stream key/endpoint is wrong. | Check Live Control Room, verify the ingest endpoint and key privately, and restart only after addressing the underlying cause. |
