For detailed system-wide EQ, use Equalizer APO with the Peace interface; for a simpler equalizer with presets and effects, try FxSound. Windows also offers audio enhancements on some devices, while VoiceMeeter and SteelSeries Sonar are better suited to mixing, routing, gaming, or device-specific workflows than to being treated as interchangeable equalizers. The evidence supports these distinct options—not a reliable list of 23 equivalent free Windows equalizers.
Why this is not a list of 23 equalizers
A long list can look useful while mixing unlike tools: a processing engine, its graphical interface, a virtual mixer, device software, and Windows driver effects do different jobs. The options below are grouped by what they actually do, so you can choose based on whether you want system-wide tone control, a simpler interface, or audio routing.

Best starting points for changing Windows audio
Equalizer APO with Peace: detailed system-wide control
Equalizer APO is the processing engine. It applies parametric or graphic EQ through Windows’ system audio effects, supports filters and VST plugins, and is designed for system-wide use. Its project listing supports Windows 7 through 11 and lists x86, x64, and ARM64 support on Windows 10 and 11. The SourceForge listing showed a last update of November 28, 2025, when checked for this article.

- Note: - 3.5mm phone audio cable is not included in the package. - A power bank or a quality charger can be used to supply power to the device, because an impure power supply may cause AC noise.
Peace Equalizer supplies the graphical interface; it is not a standalone replacement for Equalizer APO. Install Equalizer APO first, then Peace. Peace offers per-channel sliders, filters, a graph, presets, hotkeys, device-specific configurations, effects, and an AutoEQ interface for supported headphone profiles. Its SourceForge listing showed a last update of March 15, 2026.
This pairing is the better fit if you want to tune bands and filters yourself. It does require setup, including selecting the playback device during Equalizer APO configuration. Equalizer APO cannot process audio when an application bypasses Windows system effects; the project specifically identifies ASIO and WASAPI exclusive mode as limitations. If audio does not change, verify the selected device and whether the app is using an exclusive or bypass path.
Peace warns that scam websites use its name and identifies its SourceForge listing as its actual site. Use the official project pages linked above rather than a lookalike download page.

FxSound: a simpler preset-and-effects interface
FxSound combines an equalizer with effects and presets. Its project describes the Windows software as free and open source; it says the software became free in 2022 and open source in 2023. The official download page offers Windows downloads for Intel/AMD x86/x64 and ARM64 and links to release notes. It also distinguishes the current downloads from legacy DFX Audio Enhancer and FxSound Enhancer.
Choose FxSound if you prefer a more direct preset/effects-led approach instead of configuring a separate processing engine and interface. That is a difference in workflow, not proof that one option sounds better: no comparative listening measurements are established here.
Other options, for different audio jobs
Windows audio enhancements: try the controls already available
Windows provides system audio effects that may be configurable from the Enhancements tab in the Control Panel Sound applet. Microsoft documents effects including Bass Boost, Bass Management, Loudness Equalization DSP, Room Correction, Speaker Fill, and Virtual Surround, including virtualized surround over headphones. Which controls appear depends on the audio driver and device, so a missing tab or graphic equalizer does not mean every Windows PC has the same controls hidden elsewhere.

See Microsoft’s Audio Processing Object architecture documentation for the Windows audio-effects framework. If your device exposes useful enhancements, they may be enough for basic adjustments without installing another app.
VoiceMeeter: EQ as part of mixing and routing
VoiceMeeter is a virtual audio mixer for connecting, mixing, and routing audio. Its Standard, Banana, and Potato versions include EQ among broader audio effects and routing controls. It makes sense when you need to combine or direct audio sources—for example, as part of a streaming or mixing workflow—not simply to get a conventional equalizer.
SteelSeries Sonar: gaming and device workflows
SteelSeries describes Sonar EQ as a PC-only app and distinguishes it from Engine EQ, which applies EQ directly to a SteelSeries device. SteelSeries warns that using both can cause conflicts, double processing, or audio that does not sound right. Avoid stacking the two processing layers unless you have a specific reason to do so.

Choose by your setup, not by list length
- You want detailed EQ across Windows: Start with Equalizer APO and add Peace if you want a graphical interface.
- You want presets and effects with a simpler workflow: Try FxSound.
- You want basic changes and your device exposes enhancements: Test the Windows controls first.
- You need to mix or route multiple audio sources: Consider VoiceMeeter; its EQ is one part of a broader mixer.
- You use SteelSeries gaming or device software: Sonar may fit that ecosystem, but do not casually combine its EQ with Engine EQ.
For headphone-specific correction, AutoEq is a project built around equalizing headphones from frequency-response data, and Peace includes an AutoEQ interface. A profile is relevant only when it matches your headphone model; the presence of that feature does not establish a recommended headphone or guarantee a preferred sound.
Compatibility and support caveats
Equalizer APO’s Windows compatibility listing includes Windows 10, but operating-system compatibility and operating-system support are different things. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; see its Windows 10 end-of-support notice. A compatible audio app does not restore Microsoft support for the OS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAudio processing depends on the path your sound takes. A system-wide effect may not affect an app using an exclusive mode, and hardware or driver software can apply its own processing. When a change has no audible effect, check the selected output device, Windows enhancement settings, the app’s audio mode, and whether a second EQ layer is active.
