Before installing a free duplicate-file finder, check how it decides two files match, which folders and file types it will scan, and how you can verify results before removing anything. AllDup, Czkawka, and dupeGuru document different approaches; none can be named the overall winner on the evidence available here, and no comparable independent speed test is established.
Start with the kind of duplicate you want to find
A filename match and an identical-content match answer different questions. Two files with the same name may contain different data; identical files may have different names or live in different folders. Decide which problem you want to solve before choosing a tool or starting a scan.

- Names and properties: Useful for narrowing results, but a name match by itself does not prove that contents are identical.
- Content comparison: Byte-by-byte comparison or hashing can identify files by their contents rather than relying on names. The projects document different methods, so check exactly what your chosen mode compares.
- Media-focused scans: A music- or picture-oriented mode may offer options specific to that kind of file. Do not assume such a match means byte-for-byte identity unless the tool says so.
How the documented options differ
| Tool | Documented matching and scan features | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| AllDup | Its documentation lists byte-by-byte comparison and checksum methods, including MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-2 variants. It also lists filters, archive scanning, network paths, and installable and portable packages. See AllDup’s official site for current details. | Consider it if you need detailed filters or archive and network-path scanning. Confirm current Windows compatibility, package details, and free-use terms on the official page. |
| Czkawka | The project FAQ describes duplicate detection as a size, prehash, and full-hash pipeline. It names Blake3 as the default hash and also documents CRC32 and XXH3 options. Its FAQ says the process does not finish with a byte-by-byte comparison. See the Czkawka FAQ. | Check the minimum-size threshold for your interface and adjust it if small files matter. Hash-based matching is not the same documented method as a final byte-by-byte comparison. |
| dupeGuru | Project help describes Standard, Music, and Picture modes with mode-specific scan options. Results are arranged in groups with a reference file that cannot be marked for deletion. See dupeGuru’s project help. | Consider it if you want a mode-oriented workflow for general files, music, or pictures. Check the project’s current release information for the build and Windows support before downloading. |
Check scan scope and defaults
A scan only tells you about the files it actually includes. Before trusting a result count, check the selected folders and any exclusions, file-type filters, archive settings, network paths, and minimum-size threshold. Defaults can omit files you meant to inspect.

Czkawka’s FAQ documents different GUI defaults: Krokiet uses a 16 KB minimum, while GTK uses 8,192 bytes. The CLI dup tool also defaults to 8,192 bytes. These are configurable settings, not performance or accuracy measurements. If small files matter, inspect and change the threshold before scanning.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Include only locations you intend to review
AllDup documents scanning archives and network paths, as well as filters and exclusions. Such options can broaden or narrow a scan substantially. Verify the selected locations and settings rather than assuming the program will inspect every drive, archive, or shared folder automatically.
Review results before deleting anything
Treat the scan as a list of candidates, not permission to delete. Compare the full paths and, where useful, open representative files. Confirm which copy you intend to keep and whether another program or workflow depends on its location.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Check that grouped items are genuinely interchangeable for your purpose; matching names alone are not enough.
- Look at the paths to spot copies in folders where you expect a particular file to remain.
- Prefer a recoverable action when available. AllDup documents moving selected files to the Windows Recycle Bin.
- Keep a backup of important data before cleanup. A Recycle Bin workflow or a protected reference file reduces risk but does not guarantee every choice is safe.
dupeGuru’s results help describes a reference file in each group that cannot be marked for deletion. That provides a visible retained copy within the group, but you should still inspect the other paths and files before acting.

“Free” and “portable” do not by themselves establish that a download is trustworthy or private. Download from the project or vendor’s official distribution channel, check that the package and Windows support match your system, and review the current use terms. AllDup documents both installable and portable versions and free use; confirm present details on its official page. For dupeGuru and Czkawka, check their current project release sources rather than relying on an old download listing.

The feature documentation cited here is not a comparative security audit. It does not establish that a product is malware-free, collects no data, or keeps every scan local. Check current privacy and technical documentation for any such assurance, and review the folders and permissions you grant the application.

The reviewed official materials describe features and matching methods, not comparable current benchmarks. There is no basis here to rank AllDup, Czkawka, and dupeGuru by scan speed or effectiveness. Results can also depend on scan scope and settings, so compare documented behavior against your needs rather than treating an unsupported speed claim as a deciding factor.
