For a genuinely free tool that can get you started across several kinds of diagrams, try diagrams.net first. It offers a free web app and a desktop app for offline work, and lets you choose where files are saved. If you need more guided cloud features, consider Lucidchart; for a small collaborative workspace, Miro; and for basic diagrams included with an eligible business subscription, Visio in Microsoft 365.
These options define “free” differently: standalone access, a limited free tier, or a benefit attached to a paid subscription. The right fit depends on the diagram type, how many files you need, and whether you need collaboration or recurring org-chart updates.

What should you compare before choosing?
- Diagram type: Confirm that the specific free plan supports the flowchart, network notation, or org-chart workflow you need.
- Free-tier ceilings: Check document, object, or editable-board limits. A tool may support your diagram type but still impose a limit that matters to your project.
- Offline access and file location: Decide whether you need to work without a connection and where you want files stored.
- Org-chart maintenance: Separate importing data once from refreshing the chart when the source changes.
- Collaboration and account eligibility: Consider shared editing needs and whether an existing subscription includes access.
diagrams.net: a strong first stop for free and offline work
diagrams.net’s official 2024 white paper says its web application is free and that desktop apps are available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. It also documents offline diagramming and says users choose the cloud storage platform or device where diagram files are saved. Those details make it a practical first candidate if offline access or control over file location matters. Read the diagrams.net white paper.
The cited material does not establish a complete current inventory of its shape libraries or verify every advanced network and org-chart feature. If your work depends on a particular notation or data-driven chart workflow, confirm that capability before committing to it.

Lucidchart: documented support across the three diagram types
Lucid’s help documentation describes making flowcharts from templates or its flowchart shape library, creating network diagrams with shape libraries for providers including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, and building org charts. Its org-chart documentation also covers importing CSV, Excel, or Google Sheets data. These documented workflows make it a cloud option to consider when one product needs to cover several diagram jobs. The Free plan is limited in the number of documents and objects, according to Lucid’s plan comparison, last updated August 14, 2026. That comparison lists org-chart data refresh as unavailable on Free, Individual, and Team plans and available on Enterprise. Miro: free flowchart elements, with a three-board ceiling
Miro says basic shapes, flowcharts, and connectors are free on every plan. Its free workspace allows three editable boards, making it a possibility for a small collaborative project that can stay within that limit. If you expect to maintain more than three separate editable diagrams in one workspace, the board allowance is a meaningful constraint. Miro diagramming features and current plan details.

Microsoft describes Visio in Microsoft 365 as a lightweight web-based version for Microsoft 365 business subscribers, suitable for basic diagrams such as flow charts. It is an included subscription benefit for eligible users, not a free product available independently. Microsoft also distinguishes this basic version from paid Visio plans, which provide richer support for network diagrams and org charts; org-chart support in the basic offer is partial. Check your organization’s subscription and the exact diagram features it includes before relying on Visio for complex network mapping or a full org-chart workflow.
