Audacity is the clearest fit when you want to convert audio and edit it in the same desktop application. VLC is worth considering if you already use it and want a multipurpose media player with broad audio-format support. Neither is established here as the fastest, safest, or best-sounding converter; the right choice depends on your file formats, workflow, and output settings.
Choose a converter by checking the formats first
Before installing or opening a converter, confirm that it supports both your source file and the format you need to create. A format appearing in a program’s playback or import list does not necessarily mean every export option is available. Some formats may require an additional library, and settings can differ by format and operating system.

For example, Audacity documents export to WAV, AIFF, AAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. Its instructions say that M4A and WMA support requires the optional FFmpeg library. Audacity’s current installation guidance also says MP3 export is included by default on Windows and macOS; check the instructions for your own version and platform, since requirements can change. Choose output settings for the way you will use the file
A file extension change is not a sound-quality upgrade. WAV and AIFF are uncompressed formats; AAC is lossy. When audio that has already been compressed with a lossy format is converted to another lossy format, the conversion can add further loss. Keep the original when possible, and choose a destination format that fits the playback device, sharing requirement, or editing workflow. (Audacity manual: export options)
Where the chosen format permits it, look for controls such as codec, bitrate, sample rate, and channel configuration. Their availability and effect depend on the format and the application. Do not assume that a particular setting is available just because another format offers it; check the current documentation or export dialog for the format you plan to use.

Use a practical selection checklist
- Identify the input and required output. Check the exact file type and the format your destination needs.
- Verify support in both directions. Confirm that the application can import the source and export the destination, including any optional library required.
- Match the workflow. Choose Audacity if editing alongside conversion matters. Consider VLC if you already use it and have confirmed that its current conversion workflow meets your needs.
- Review the export controls. Check which quality and channel settings are available for the selected format.
- Keep the original file. This lets you retry with different settings and avoids relying on a converted copy as your only source.
- Check platform and version instructions. Download from the official project site and consult current documentation for your operating system.
Know when conversion will not work
Digital rights management (DRM) can block import. Audacity’s FAQ says it cannot import DRM-protected media; optional FFmpeg can import many unprotected video files, but this is not a way to bypass digital restrictions. (Audacity FAQ)

A desktop application lets you work with files locally rather than uploading them to an online conversion service. That distinction alone does not establish a privacy guarantee: the privacy terms and file-handling practices of individual online services must be checked separately. If file confidentiality matters, review those terms before uploading.
