Aegis Authenticator is a strong fit for Android users who want an encrypted, locally managed vault and explicit backup controls. Ente Auth is the better fit when you need authenticator access across iPhone, Android, desktop, and web, with optional end-to-end encrypted sync. Both are free and open source; the practical choice comes down to your devices and how you want to recover your codes.
Which Google Authenticator alternative should you choose?
Choose based on where your codes need to work and how you want to protect a backup. Aegis focuses on Android and lets you control vault exports and automatic backups. Ente Auth covers more platforms and offers encrypted cloud backup and sync, while also describing offline use without an account.

| App | Best fit | Platforms and storage | Import and backup options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aegis Authenticator | Android users who want local vault control | Android; encrypted vault | Google Authenticator import; plaintext or encrypted export; automatic backups to a location you choose |
| Ente Auth | People who need codes on multiple device types | iOS, Android, web, macOS, Linux, and Windows; optional end-to-end encrypted cloud backup and sync | QR scan, manual secret entry, or bulk import; offline mode without an account |
These are feature-based fits, not an independent security ranking. Open-source code can offer transparency, but it does not guarantee that an app is secure or that a particular migration will succeed.

Aegis is a free, open-source authenticator for Android. Its project documents support for HOTP and TOTP, the standard one-time-password methods used by many services. The vault uses AES-256-GCM encryption and can be unlocked with a password or biometrics, according to the Aegis project.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Aegis lists Google Authenticator as an import source. For backups, it supports plaintext or encrypted export and automatic vault backups to a location selected by the user. That gives Android users control over where a copy is stored, but it also means they need to choose and maintain a safe recovery location. A plaintext export is especially sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the underlying authentication secrets.
The project’s documentation establishes Android support; it does not establish clients for iPhone, desktop, or web. If you need to use the same tokens across those platforms, consider Ente Auth instead.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Ente Auth: cross-platform access and optional sync
Ente Auth is free and open source, with clients for iOS, Android, web, macOS, Linux, and Windows listed in its project repository. Its product page describes end-to-end encrypted cloud backups and syncing codes across mobile, desktop, and web clients.

Ente also describes offline use without an account, so cloud sync is not the only mode presented by the product. If you enable sync, the service’s stated benefit is that your encrypted backup and codes are available across supported clients. If you prefer offline use, plan how you will recover tokens if your device is lost or replaced.

Ente documents importing by QR code, manual secret entry, or bulk import from other two-factor authentication apps. Its repository names Cure53, Symbolic Software, and Fallible as external auditors of its source code and cryptography. That is an audit claim attributed to Ente, not a guarantee of future security or an independent comparison against Aegis.
How to move tokens without losing account access
Authenticator migration is not a universal one-step transfer. The destination app may support importing tokens from the old app, but each online service can have its own enrollment and recovery process.

- Secure recovery first. Check each account’s recovery options. If the service provides recovery codes, save them somewhere secure before changing its authenticator.
- Set up the destination app. In Aegis, use its Google Authenticator import option where available. In Ente Auth, use a QR code, enter a secret manually, or use bulk import.
- Verify each account. Generate a code in the new app and test it with the service before removing or disabling the old setup.
- Keep a recovery path. Retain the previous setup until the new entries work, and make sure you know where any encrypted vault or backup can be recovered.
Some services may require you to enroll a new authenticator in their own security settings rather than transfer an existing token. Follow the service’s recovery and setup steps if an import does not work.
How to choose a backup model
Pick a recovery method you will actually maintain. With Aegis, the choice centers on an encrypted vault and exports or automatic backups saved to a location you select. With Ente, the documented convenience is end-to-end encrypted cloud backup and sync; its product page also describes offline use without an account.

- Prefer local control? Aegis gives Android users explicit export and backup-location options. Protect exported files, especially if you choose plaintext.
- Need several device types? Ente Auth lists mobile, desktop, and web clients, and describes encrypted sync across them.
- Want to avoid relying on one device? Decide in advance where your backup or recovery codes will live and how you will regain access if that device is unavailable.
Neither open-source status nor encryption features replace careful recovery planning. Choose the app whose backup process you understand and can reliably access.
