For a free desktop suite that works offline, start with LibreOffice. If you regularly exchange Microsoft Office files and also want desktop and web editing, consider ONLYOFFICE—but test your own files because its compatibility claims come from the vendor. For browser-first editing, Google Docs is an option. You may not need to switch at all: Microsoft offers free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with a Microsoft account.
How to choose a free Office alternative
Choose based on how you work, not just on the app names. Check whether you need to work without internet, which operating systems you use, whether collaborators need live sharing, and how reliably your important DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files must render. Also consider where files will be stored, whether an account is required, and whether you rely on advanced features such as macros or complex spreadsheet formulas.

File support is not the same as perfect file fidelity. Fonts, page layouts, formulas, macros, and presentation effects can behave differently between suites. Before moving important work, open representative documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in the candidate software and inspect the results.

LibreOffice: best starting point for offline desktop work
LibreOffice is a free, open-source suite with Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for presentations, Draw for diagrams, Base for databases, and Math for formulas. It is a strong first choice when you want installed applications and need to keep working locally without an internet connection. The official system requirements list Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or newer, and GNU/Linux prerequisites. For the listed Windows and Linux configurations, the minimum memory figure is 256 MB; that is a published minimum, not a recommendation for comfortable work with large files. Base requires Java, while most other LibreOffice features do not.
Do not assume a document created in Microsoft Office will look or behave identically in LibreOffice. Formatting and feature support can vary when files move between office suites. Check important templates, fonts, formulas, macros, and presentations before making LibreOffice your default for consequential work. ONLYOFFICE: desktop and web routes for Office-format files
ONLYOFFICE offers free desktop editors for Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as personal web editing and collaboration options. Its home-use page promotes support for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX and describes real-time collaboration. Those compatibility statements are the vendor’s claims, not a guarantee that every Office file or feature will transfer perfectly. See ONLYOFFICE for home use.

Choose it if you want both local editing and a web collaboration route, especially when your work involves Microsoft file formats. Before relying on it, test examples that reflect your actual workload—particularly complex layouts, spreadsheet functions, fonts, macros, and presentation effects. Support for a file extension alone does not establish support for every feature within that format.
Google Docs: a browser-first choice
Google Docs is an online document editor suited to people who prioritize browser access and sharing. Google’s product page presents it as an online editor: Google Docs.

Check the current account plan, regional availability, and storage terms before deciding whether it meets your needs. If your main goal is to stop paying for desktop Office, you can still use Microsoft’s browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without switching suites. Microsoft Support says free users can access those web apps after signing in with a Microsoft account and receive 5 GB of OneDrive online storage. This is the simplest route if you value familiar Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files and can work in a browser. It is not a replacement for installed desktop apps when offline access or desktop-only features are essential. Check current account and regional availability before relying on the free plan.
