Best Frame Rate for YouTube Live Streaming: 30 vs. 60 FPS

YouTube Live supports up to 60 fps. Choose 30 or 60 based on motion and what your encoder and connection can sustain, using YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a guide.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best frame rate for every YouTube Live stream. YouTube supports live encoder frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose 60 fps for content with frequent or fast motion if your encoder and connection can sustain the higher bitrate; for mostly static presentations or talking-head streams, 30 fps may be sufficient and uses less bandwidth. Test with representative movement and audio before going live, then monitor stream health.

How to choose between 30 fps and 60 fps

Frame rate is the number of frames sent each second. A higher rate can make fast movement look smoother, but it also raises the recommended bitrate at the same resolution and codec. YouTube does not prescribe one rate as universally best: match the setting to the motion in your content and what your encoder and internet connection can sustain reliably.

Choose When it may fit Trade-off
30 fps Mostly static scenes, such as a speaker, presentation, or discussion. Lower recommended bitrate than 60 fps at the same resolution and codec.
60 fps Frequent or fast movement, when the encoder and connection can sustain the settings. Higher recommended bitrate at the same resolution and codec.

These are practical choices, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality. A stable 30 fps stream is preferable to a 60 fps setting that causes dropped frames or stream-health problems. YouTube recommends selecting a reliable quality based on your connection and testing before the event. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists support up to 60 fps and gives bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Recommended live bitrate by frame rate, resolution, and codec

The following are YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrates in Mbps. They are recommendations for encoder settings, not guaranteed connection requirements. Codec matters: the AV1/H.265 values differ from H.264.

Resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 H.264
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

4K/2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
4K/2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 1080p at 60 fps at 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p and 30 fps, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps. Do not use a bitrate figure without its resolution, frame rate, and codec context.

Set up the live encoder correctly

In YouTube Live Control Room, your encoder needs the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube detects the encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions. By default, YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. The exact encoder controls depend on the software or hardware you use.

  • Frame rate: Select a rate your source, encoder, and connection can sustain; YouTube’s live encoder limit is up to 60 fps.
  • Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe frequency; four seconds is the maximum in the guidance.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its live encoder guidance also lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1.

For stream-level options such as latency, see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Latency is a separate choice: lower latency can increase playback buffering, and it does not change the basic 30-versus-60-fps decision.

Test before going live and watch stream health

  1. Check your connection. Run a speed test, but do not treat the result alone as proof that the stream will be stable at your chosen settings.
  2. Run a private or unlisted test stream. YouTube says to test before starting the live stream. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see during the actual event.
  3. Check the picture and audio. Look for stutter, dropped frames, sync problems, or audio issues while the representative content is playing.
  4. Monitor Live Control Room. Watch stream health and messages during the test and the event. If the stream is unstable, reduce the frame rate, resolution, or bitrate to a combination your setup can sustain.

Live frame rate is not the same as upload frame rate

YouTube’s upload guidance says to encode and upload a video at the frame rate at which it was recorded; it lists common upload rates of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. That advice concerns uploaded videos, not live ingestion. For a live stream, use the live encoder guidance: up to 60 fps, with bitrate selected for the live resolution, frame rate, and codec. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations for the separate upload case.

Common frame-rate and stream problems

  • 60 fps stream stutters or drops frames: The encoder or connection may not sustain the selected resolution, codec, and bitrate together. Test again at 30 fps or lower resolution, and monitor stream health.
  • Bitrate choice seems inconsistent: Confirm both the codec and resolution before applying a recommendation. YouTube’s H.264 values are higher than its AV1/H.265 values in the listed examples.
  • Encoder settings do not match the intended stream: Check the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder and verify the detected settings in Live Control Room. Automatic detection is YouTube’s default recommendation; manual selection uses a custom stream key.
  • The live image looks less smooth than expected: Test with actual movement, not only a static standby screen. If your source or encoder does not deliver the selected frame rate, choosing a higher number in the encoder alone will not make the source motion smoother.
  • Viewers buffer despite a sound frame-rate choice: Frame rate is only one part of delivery. Review resolution, bitrate, connection stability, and latency settings; lower latency can increase playback buffering.
