For natural-looking sports video, match your capture frame rate to the playback timeline and start with a shutter speed near twice the frame rate: for example, 30 fps at about 1/60 second or 60 fps at about 1/120 second. For slow motion, record faster than the timeline rate. These are starting points, not universal rules: action, lighting, flicker, and the look you want all matter.
What frame rate should you use for sports video?
Choose the frame rate according to how the footage will play. For real-time footage, record at the intended playback rate. If you want slow motion, capture more frames per second than the timeline will play back. When those extra frames are played in sequence at the lower timeline rate, the action appears slower.

- Real time: Match capture and playback rates, such as 30 fps footage on a 30 fps timeline.
- Moderate slow motion: Record at 50 or 60 fps for a 25 or 30 fps timeline, respectively.
- More pronounced slow motion: Record at 100 or 120 fps if the action and your camera’s mode limits justify it.
For example, 60 fps footage played on a 24 fps timeline has enough recorded frames to slow the action while showing each captured frame. Fujifilm explains the relationship between capture and playback rates in its frame-rate guide.
Choose for the action, not the camera’s maximum
The rate you need depends on how much slowdown helps viewers read the movement. Fujifilm offers a tennis serve as an example that may suit 240 fps, while a golf putt may work better at 120 or 100 fps. Those are illustrations, not requirements for every serve or putt. Use the lowest rate that delivers the slow-motion effect you actually want; a camera’s highest setting is not automatically the best choice.

What shutter speed should you use for sports video?
A useful starting point is the 180° shutter guideline: expose each frame for about half of its frame interval. That corresponds to a shutter time of approximately 1 divided by twice the frame rate. Nikon describes shutter angle as the exposure time relative to frame rate and presents 180° as a common filmmaking rule of thumb—not a camera law. See its shutter-angle guide.
| Capture rate | Approximate 180° shutter time |
|---|---|
| 24 fps | 1/48 sec (often 1/50) |
| 25 fps | 1/50 sec |
| 30 fps | 1/60 sec |
| 50 fps | 1/100 sec |
| 60 fps | 1/120 sec |
| 100 fps | 1/200 sec |
| 120 fps | 1/240 sec |
These are calculations from the 180° relationship; camera menus may offer rounded values. Fujifilm specifically gives 24 fps at 1/48 or 1/50 and 120 fps at 1/240 in its slow-motion guide.
Use shutter speed to shape motion blur
A shorter exposure than the 180° starting point reduces motion blur and can make fast movement look crisper, but it also makes movement look more staccato. A longer exposure increases blur. Neither look is inherently right for every sport: decide whether you prefer smoother-looking motion or more sharply defined individual frames, then review the footage at its intended playback speed.

Faster shutter speeds also reduce the light reaching the sensor. Sony warns that the shutter speed needed for slow-motion recording can make correct exposure difficult. If the image is too dark, consider adding light or choosing a less aggressive capture rate or shutter speed rather than assuming a single fast setting will work in every venue.
How to choose settings before the event
- Decide the delivery timeline. Choose whether each clip is intended to play in real time or in slow motion, then set a compatible editing timeline or camera playback mode.
- Set the capture rate. For real time, match the intended playback rate. For slow motion, choose a higher rate based on how much slowdown is useful and what your camera supports.
- Start near 180°. Use the table to find the approximate shutter time for the capture rate. At 60 fps, start around 1/120 sec; at 120 fps, around 1/240 sec.
- Check exposure and motion character. Review a test clip. If motion blur is excessive, try a shorter exposure; if the image becomes too dark, adjust lighting or reconsider the frame rate and shutter combination.
- Test the exact recording mode. Confirm resolution, codec, recording duration, audio behavior, available frame rates, and exposure limits in your camera’s manual. High-frame-rate options and their restrictions vary by model.
Flicker from artificial lighting can also affect the result. If you see bands or pulsing brightness, test a shutter setting compatible with the venue’s lighting and your camera’s anti-flicker options; the 180° guideline is a baseline, not a reason to ignore visible flicker.

Two clips of the same sport can call for different settings. Make the choice by weighing the intended playback, action speed, desired degree of slow motion, motion-blur style, available light, and the camera mode’s limits. The selected manufacturer guidance gives examples, not a universal sport-by-sport shutter-speed prescription.

Camera mode limitations to check
High frame rates may be available only with certain resolutions or recording formats, and a mode may affect clip length or audio. Check your specific model before relying on a setting. For example, the official Insta360 Ace Series slow-motion documentation lists 120 fps and 240 fps options for supported modes and models. Sony’s FX3 S&Q settings guide discusses exposure difficulty with the faster shutter speeds used for slow motion. These are model-specific examples, not specifications for every camera.
