For a smaller phone to carry closed and quick cover-screen interactions, consider a flip-style foldable. Neither design guarantees comfortable one-handed use; that depends on the closed phone’s size, weight, your hand and your grip.
Book-style or flip-style: which fits your priorities?
The key choice is what you want the phone to do when it is open and when it is closed. Book-style foldables open like a small notebook, creating a larger display for reading and multitasking. Flip-style foldables close into a more compact shape and emphasize interactions on the cover screen; for a full-page reading area, you open the phone.

Samsung describes foldable designs as serving different preferences, including reading and streaming versus compactness in a closed phone. An independent 2026 roundup likewise characterizes notebook-style models as stronger for productivity and flip phones as more portable. These are useful category-level distinctions, not proof that every model or reader will have the same experience.

For reading: compare the open screen, not just the headline size
A larger inner display can make long articles and other text easier to view without constant scrolling, but a screen measurement does not by itself tell you how comfortable a phone is to read. Shape, text size, app behavior and how you hold the device all matter. For one example of a book-style option, Google lists an 8-inch inner display and a 6.4-inch outer display for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent findings about reading comfort. Google’s 2025 announcement describes the displays; its specification page also lists Reading Mode under accessibility features.

On a flip-style phone, the compact closed shape is the appeal, but the larger reading area is available when the device is open. Check how your preferred reading app looks on the main screen and whether it transitions smoothly between the cover and inner displays. Samsung cautions that some apps may not fully support continuity between those screens. Its support documentation describes features across its foldable phones, so confirm applicability for the exact model and software version you are considering. Samsung’s foldable-phone feature guide covers continuity and other modes.
For multitasking: check the software features you will actually use
Multitasking depends on software as well as screen size. Look for the specific actions you need—such as placing two apps side by side, resizing their panes, moving content between them or reopening a saved app pairing—and verify that your own apps support them.
- Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Google describes adjustable two-app split screen and drag-and-drop between apps. These are manufacturer-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every app supports every workflow. Google’s product announcement describes the features.
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold family: Samsung documents Multi window split-screen and pop-up views, Multi view for Z Fold apps, and app continuity across cover and main displays. Feature availability can differ by model and software version, and the company notes that some apps may not fully support continuity. Samsung’s support page explains these options.
- Motorola Razr Fold: Motorola documents split-screen work, drag-and-drop, app switching and saved app combinations. These are stated features, not comparative test results. Check Motorola’s multitasking instructions for the device.
For one-handed use: judge the closed phone in your own hand
A foldable’s compact shape when closed does not automatically make it easy to use one-handed. Width, thickness and weight affect how it sits in your grip, while hand size and the way you hold a phone affect reach. If handling is a deciding factor, try the candidate closed if possible, including reaching across the cover screen and opening it while holding it securely.

Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold at 9.1 ounces, with folded dimensions of 6.1 × 3 × 0.4 inches. These manufacturer figures help describe the physical trade-off, but they cannot establish subjective comfort for a particular person. Google’s specification page provides the listed weight and folded dimensions.

Half-open modes can change how you use a foldable
Some foldables use the hinge to hold the phone partly open, creating hands-free viewing or a different control layout. Samsung documents Flex mode on its foldables. Motorola describes a laptop-like mode for the Razr Fold: an app can sit on the upper screen while the lower half provides controls, including a split keyboard or touchpad. These are manufacturer-described functions; check the exact model and software version before relying on a particular mode. See Samsung’s feature documentation and Motorola’s Razr Fold laptop-mode instructions.
How to choose a model without overlooking the trade-offs
- Decide which screen matters most. If most reading and work will happen with the phone open, compare book-style models’ inner-screen size and shape. If a smaller closed phone matters more, assess what a flip model’s cover screen can do.
- List the apps and actions you rely on. Check whether your reading, messaging and work apps support the screen transitions and multitasking actions you want. Manufacturer feature lists do not guarantee that every app behaves the same way.
- Evaluate closed handling in person when possible. Compare width, thickness and weight, then test your reach and grip rather than assuming compactness means one-handed comfort.
- Check local buying details for the exact model. Price, availability and warranty depend on market and seller; confirm current terms before purchasing.
Battery figures also need careful comparison. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery benchmark table reports 14:44 for the Motorola Razr Fold and 10:55 for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. These are results from that publisher’s test, not standardized guarantees of everyday runtime; use the comparison as a publisher-specific benchmark, not a promise of how long either phone will last for you.
