Why FiveM capacity cannot be reduced to a player-count number

A “100-player” or “200-player” label describes only one input. Two servers with the same connected count can have radically different resource use because of framework design, script frequency, entity counts, streamed maps, vehicle packs, voice features, database queries and administrative tooling. OneSync settings and the way resources distribute work across ticks also change the result.

Measure the workload you actually intend to run. A public roleplay server with a large resource pack may consume more CPU and disk I/O than a lightly scripted server with the same player count. A database-heavy economy, inventory or housing system can become the bottleneck while the game process still appears healthy. Treat every advertised capacity as a starting hypothesis, never a guarantee.

What to measure during a realistic load test

• Per-tick CPU time and frame time: look for sustained increases and spikes when players enter busy areas or trigger scripted events.

• the FXServer process and its runtime overhead;
• the database engine and its working set;
• filesystem and application caches;
• monitoring, log processing and administrative tools; and

Keep swap as an emergency cushion, not as planned capacity. When the host begins swapping, tick and database latency can rise sharply. A larger plan with unused RAM during normal play may be cheaper than troubleshooting intermittent stalls during a full server.

Use NVMe for resource and database I/O

NVMe storage helps with resource loading, database reads and writes, logs and backup preparation. When high-frequency compute is worth testing

Choose a high-frequency option for a benchmark when per-tick CPU time is the limiting metric and memory, disk latency and network capacity are otherwise adequate. Test the same workload on a regular plan with similar memory so that you measure processor behavior rather than simply comparing different capacities. Keep the plan that delivers stable frame times with sufficient headroom, not the one with the most attractive hourly figure.

Region selection

List the cities where most players connect, then test routes from their major ISPs to the candidate regions. A geographically close region can still have an inferior route at peak times. Record latency and packet-loss observations during busy periods before moving production.

Hetzner Cloud: verify location and inventory first

The available combination can change, so confirm that the required CPU, RAM and storage profile is orderable in the region that serves your players. Hetzner is a general VPS environment: you control the operating system and FiveM stack rather than relying on a specialized game panel. That gives experienced administrators flexibility, but it also makes patching, firewalling, monitoring, backups and recovery your responsibility. Deploying FiveM on a VPS

Backups and recovery are part of the hosting decision

A provider snapshot is not a complete disaster-recovery plan. Keep database dumps and resource archives outside the primary VPS account, retain multiple restore points and perform restore drills on a separate environment. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery capability.

Common failure modes and fixes

The server feels slow despite low average CPU

Average utilization can hide a single busy tick or short CPU spikes. Inspect per-tick CPU time and frame time during the exact event that feels slow. Profile or disable the resource causing the spike, then retest before adding more vCPUs.

Players report pauses while RAM appears adequate

Check swap activity, disk latency and database latency. A database stall or I/O queue can produce pauses without exhausting total memory. Move the database workload to a faster storage profile, optimize the offending query or increase headroom after confirming the cause.
