Best FFmpeg Settings to Resize Prerecorded Video for a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Preserve aspect ratio, set YouTube-aligned bitrate and keyframes, then test FFmpeg looping and stream health before relying on a 24/7 broadcast.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reliable FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup, preserve the video’s aspect ratio, choose a deliberate output canvas, and use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the output codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 can repeat an input indefinitely, but looping a file is not the same as keeping a live broadcast healthy for 24/7.

Choose the output size without distorting the picture

Decide the output canvas before choosing a scale filter. A common 16:9 target is 1920×1080, but the right size depends on the source, your encoding capacity, network upload, and the quality you intend to send to YouTube. Upscaling a smaller source does not restore detail; downscaling a larger source can reduce encoding load and bitrate needs.

When the source and target aspect ratios differ, there are two ordinary choices. Fit the entire picture inside the canvas and add bars or padding, or fill the canvas and crop some of the image. Do not force the source into the target width and height independently: stretching changes the geometry of faces and objects.

Presentation What happens Trade-off
Fit and pad Preserves the complete source image; unused space is filled with bars or a chosen background. No picture is lost, but the image may not fill the full canvas.
Fill and crop Fills the target canvas by trimming part of the source image. Uses the full canvas, but important content near an edge may be cut off.

FFmpeg’s -s output option sets frame size by adding a scale filter at the end of the filter graph. If filter order matters—for example, because you need to scale, then pad or crop—use an explicit filter graph instead. The exact expression depends on the input geometry and desired presentation. Confirm filter-option syntax against the FFmpeg version installed on your host, then inspect the resulting file’s dimensions and playback before streaming it.

Set frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframes for YouTube

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR bitrate encoding. Your available encoder and the source file affect which codec is practical; H.264 is a straightforward choice when compatibility is the priority. Check the current YouTube Live encoder guidance before deployment because ingest settings can change.

Do not treat resolution as a bitrate setting. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you will actually send. YouTube Help’s page accessed in 2026 recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for H.264 at 240p–720p30. Those are recommendations for the specified ingest settings, not guaranteed picture quality; they also do not replace the need for stable upload capacity. Do not extrapolate those figures to other resolutions or frame rates.

Build and verify the resize workflow

  1. Inspect the source. Check its width, height, aspect ratio, frame rate, scan type, audio streams, and whether the audio plays correctly. Test representative sections, including fast motion and quiet passages.
  2. Choose a canvas and framing. Decide whether to preserve the whole picture with padding or fill the canvas by cropping. Avoid stretching. If the source is interlaced, determine whether deinterlacing is needed; if you change frame rate, review the result for judder or duplicated frames.
  3. Select the output codec and bitrate. Pick an encoder available on the host, then use YouTube’s current bitrate table for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave practical network headroom rather than assuming the connection can sustain its advertised maximum.
  4. Set keyframe interval and audio deliberately. Target the 2-second YouTube recommendation, with no interval over 4 seconds. Confirm the audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate in the output rather than assuming the input’s track is suitable.
  5. Make a short output test. Encode representative footage and inspect its dimensions, aspect ratio, frame rate, audio, and playback. The precise filter graph and command depend on your media and installed FFmpeg build; this guide does not claim a tested universal command.
  6. Rehearse the actual ingest path. Send the intended file, settings, and transport to a YouTube test stream or scheduled event. Watch YouTube Studio’s live control room for incoming data, stream-health warnings, and messages, while checking FFmpeg logs and reported encoding speed.
  7. Validate the host over time. Confirm that encoding keeps up with real time under the intended load and that the network remains stable. Decide separately how you will monitor the process and recover from a stopped FFmpeg process, host failure, or connection loss.

Loop a prerecorded file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option is used to repeat an input indefinitely. It addresses file repetition only: it does not guarantee a continuous connection to YouTube, successful ingest, adequate encoding speed, or automatic restart after a process or host failure. Put the loop option before the input it applies to, and verify the behavior with your installed FFmpeg version and media.

A 2022 FFmpeg-user archive post about FFmpeg 4.4 described high CPU utilization and loss of YouTube’s live indicator during an attempted loop. That is one user’s report, not evidence that the option itself causes those problems or that they will occur on current versions. It is a reason to rehearse your own full pipeline rather than assume the loop alone makes a production-ready stream.

Monitor both sides of the connection: FFmpeg’s logs and encoding speed, and YouTube Studio’s live control room and stream-health messages. A separate 2020 community reply suggested checking frame rate and keyframe settings when diagnosing ingest trouble; current YouTube encoder guidance, rather than older community claims, should be the reference for today’s settings. No single filter string, command, or watchdog design is established here as reliable for every file and host.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
People or objects look stretched Source and output aspect ratios were forced to match. Scale proportionally, then choose fit-and-pad or fill-and-crop. Inspect the output dimensions and image.
Black bars or missing edges are unexpected The framing choice does not match the source’s aspect ratio. Check whether the filter is fitting or filling the canvas; adjust padding or crop intentionally and review edge content.
YouTube reports ingest or stream-health warnings Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, transport, or upload stability. Compare the actual output against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and bitrate table. Rehearse with the intended settings and read Studio’s messages.
FFmpeg falls behind or CPU use rises The selected encoder, preset, output size, frame rate, filters, or concurrent workload may exceed host capacity. Check FFmpeg’s reported speed and logs. Test a lower output resolution or frame rate, or a hardware encoder if available; recheck picture quality and ingest after each change.
Video repeats but the live indicator disappears File looping may continue while the ingest connection or encoder process is no longer healthy. Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube Studio independently. Confirm the process is still producing and sending frames; plan monitoring and restart behavior separately.
Picture is present but audio is missing, wrong, or out of sync Input track selection, audio mapping, codec, or source timing. Inspect the input’s audio streams, test the output locally, and verify the audio YouTube receives in a rehearsal.

Account for the operational cost of 24/7 streaming

A do-it-yourself stream needs a host, enough processing capacity to encode the chosen output in real time, a stable upload connection, and storage for the media. The host and network must remain available throughout the broadcast. The right hardware cost depends on your existing equipment, encoder, filters, source, and workload; there is no research-backed universal CPU or uptime figure for this workflow. Test your own setup instead of relying on a benchmark that may not match it.
