YouTube does not specify that exact pixel-format string as a requirement. For HDR, do not apply the SDR recommendation: YouTube’s guidance calls for 10-bit video and appropriate HDR color settings.
Why yuv420p is the sensible SDR default
yuv420p is an 8-bit YUV format with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. It is a familiar, broadly compatible choice for an SDR H.264 workflow such as FFmpeg with libx264. Treat it as a practical recommendation, not a YouTube mandate: YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies codecs and streaming settings, but does not name yuv420p as a required pixel format. YouTube recommends 8-bit Rec. 709 for SDR and transcodes incoming live video into multiple viewer formats. YouTube’s live encoder settings

For a libx264 command, the relevant flag is -pix_fmt yuv420p. The encoder must accept that format; support can depend on the encoder and how FFmpeg was built. FFmpeg documents that libx264’s supported 8- to 10-bit color spaces depend on its configuration. FFmpeg codec documentation

| Workflow | Pixel format and color guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SDR over RTMP/RTMPS | yuv420p is a practical compatibility-first option for 8-bit SDR; use Rec. 709. |
YouTube does not publish yuv420p as a mandatory pixel-format setting. |
| HDR live streaming | Use a compatible 10-bit HDR workflow and preserve the appropriate color metadata. | YouTube’s general live guidance recommends H.265 for HDR. Its HLS HDR specification calls for 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer. Confirm requirements for the ingestion route you use. |
YouTube’s HLS HDR specification is distinct from its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance. It also specifies M2TS muxing, HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Do not assume that a pixel-format flag alone makes a stream compliant with that route. YouTube HLS ingestion documentation

Check whether your FFmpeg encoder accepts it
Pixel-format support is encoder-specific, not a universal FFmpeg setting. Inspect the installed encoder’s supported formats and confirm that the build exposes the encoder you intend to use. For libx264, bit-depth and color-space support varies with its build configuration. FFmpeg’s MediaFoundation documentation says its video encoders can accept nv12 or yuv420p, but some accept only one; its documentation describes nv12 as the safer option especially among hardware encoders. That guidance applies to MediaFoundation encoders, not every FFmpeg encoder. FFmpeg codec documentation
If FFmpeg reports an unsupported pixel format or cannot configure the output, check the encoder’s accepted formats and build rather than assuming YouTube rejected yuv420p. Choose a format that the selected encoder supports and that matches your SDR or HDR workflow.

Pixel format is only one part of a healthy YouTube stream
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs. Its published guidance recommends CBR, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate that corresponds to your codec, resolution, and frame rate; the published figures below are YouTube recommendations, not independent test results. YouTube’s live encoder settings

These recommendations are not a pixel-format quality ranking. The official guidance reviewed does not publish a measured quality advantage for one FFmpeg pixel format over another for this use case. Match your output settings to the source and available upload capacity, test a representative stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube says it will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose, but detection does not replace testing or monitoring.
