To loop a prerecorded fireplace video indefinitely on YouTube Live, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before the input filename and -re to read the file at its natural rate. This 1080p30 example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, follows YouTube’s recommended 5 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, and sends the stream over RTMPS:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "fireplace.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the final value with the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not share the stream key: YouTube treats it like a password for your broadcast. The example assumes a 1920×1080, 30 fps source/output and stereo audio. It is a starting template, not a tested guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, account, or network.

Prepare the file and YouTube stream
- Check the source. Use
ffprobeto inspect the video’s dimensions, frame rate, and audio streams. The command maps the first video stream and optionally maps the first audio stream; the question mark in-map 0:a:0?allows the command to proceed if the input has no audio stream. - Confirm livestream access and rights. Make sure the channel is configured for livestreaming and that you have the rights needed to rebroadcast the fireplace recording, including any music or other material in it. Eligibility and rights for a particular account or video are not established by this general command.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy the displayed RTMPS server URL and stream key. Use YouTube’s endpoint rather than guessing a hostname or key format.
- Test before relying on the broadcast. Start with an unlisted stream, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the encoder feed.
What the FFmpeg options do
| Option | Purpose |
|---|---|
-re |
Reads the file at its native rate, making a prerecorded input behave like a real-time source rather than sending the file as fast as the machine can process it. |
-stream_loop -1 |
Repeats the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it belongs before -i. |
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? |
Selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. If there is no audio, remove the audio mapping and audio encoding options or provide a deliberate silent track appropriate to the ingest setup. |
-c:v libx264 |
Encodes video using H.264. The veryfast preset trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding workload; confirm your installed FFmpeg build includes libx264. |
-b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k |
Sets a 5 Mbps video target and maximum rate with a 10 Mbps rate-control buffer. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; it is a recommendation, not a mandatory setting for every video. |
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 |
Requests a widely compatible pixel format and 30 fps output. Match output dimensions and frame rate to the intended stream rather than assuming every source is 1080p30. |
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 |
At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP targets a keyframe every two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; the minimum interval and disabled scene-cut insertion help keep the cadence regular. |
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 |
Encodes audio as AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube supports AAC or MP3 for live audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. |
-f flv |
Uses the FLV container for the RTMP/RTMPS output workflow. RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection. |
Choose bitrate for the actual output
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 bitrates. Pick the row that matches your output resolution and frame rate; the figures below are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or universal requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps |
The example’s 5 Mbps settings fit the 1080p30 row. If you choose another output, adjust the frame rate, GOP length, dimensions, and rate-control values deliberately rather than changing only the bitrate. A mostly static fireplace may be watchable at lower resolution or frame rate, but that is a production choice; these recommendations do not establish one best setting for every fireplace video.

Plan for a long-running broadcast
Keep upload capacity in reserve
YouTube recommends maintaining 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream requires and warns that a connection disruption can break the broadcast. Treat that margin as guidance, not an uptime guarantee. Use a stable connection and test the full setup before leaving it unattended.
Know the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder creation guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a broadcast longer than 12 hours, do not assume YouTube will produce one complete archived video. If a complete archive matters, end and restart in shorter sessions, then verify the result in Studio.

Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg says an option is unavailable: Check the installed build and its documentation. The command requires support for
-stream_loopand thelibx264encoder. - The video plays once instead of looping: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before-i. FFmpeg applies many options to the next input or output, so option placement matters. - The stream ends when the file ends: Check that the loop option is present and attached to the input. Also verify that the process is still running and inspect its output for errors.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Re-copy the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, check that the key remains private and current, and inspect the encoder output and YouTube stream-health status.
- There is no sound: The source may lack an audio stream. Remove the optional audio mapping and audio encoder settings, or add an intentional silent track if the ingest setup requires audio.
- The stream health is poor or it disconnects: Check sustained upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin, and test the connection for interruptions. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for an unstable link.
- The archive is incomplete or missing after a very long stream: Streams longer than 12 hours are not covered by YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance. For a complete VOD, use shorter sessions and confirm the archive in Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video looping on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
