For a conventional H.264 SDR stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps video if your connection can sustain it reliably. If bandwidth or encoder capacity is limited, use 720p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest rates—not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming—and the right setting depends on codec, output resolution, frame rate, and dependable upload capacity.

Recommended H.264 settings by resolution and frame rate

Use YouTube’s live-stream encoder table rather than its separate upload-video guidance. The values below are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended input bitrates for live ingestion. Select the row matching the resolution and frame rate FFmpeg actually sends.

Output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These rates are YouTube’s input recommendations, not viewer playback guarantees: YouTube transcodes live input into playback formats, so viewers may receive a different version. YouTube lists different rates for H.265/HEVC and AV1 as well. For example, its H.265/AV1 guidance includes 1080p30 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended, 1080p60 at 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended, and 2160p60 at 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended. Do not apply H.264 figures to another codec; check the corresponding codec column in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Choose a resolution your connection and source can sustain

1080p30: a general-purpose starting point

For ordinary-motion content, 1080p30 is a practical balance when upload capacity and encoding resources can sustain YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 video rate. The published 5 Mbps minimum is not the recommended target when the connection can reliably carry more.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

720p30: prioritize consistency on limited bandwidth

When upload capacity is constrained, or a more conservative stream is preferable to fine detail, 720p30 at the recommended 8 Mbps is a sensible lower-bandwidth choice. YouTube’s listed minimum is 3 Mbps.

1080p60: use when smoother motion matters

Choose 1080p60 for content where smoother movement is valuable only if the encoder and sustained connection can handle the recommended 17 Mbps H.264 video rate. Its listed minimum is 6 Mbps.

1440p and 4K: justify the extra detail and resource cost

Higher resolution can suit detailed source material, but it requires substantially more upload capacity and encoding resources. YouTube notes that 4K/2160 live streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option. For static or low-motion content, a lower frame rate can reduce encoding work, but do not treat a bitrate below YouTube’s applicable published recommendation as an officially recommended rate.

FFmpeg settings for a looping file stream

This example loops a local file and sends H.264/AAC through the FLV muxer to an RTMP destination. It uses 1080p30, a 14 Mbps video target, and a 60-frame GOP—two seconds at 30 fps. Set the output dimensions to the resolution you choose; verify the installed FFmpeg build’s behavior and actual keyframe cadence before relying on it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"

Replace YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL with the RTMP ingest address from YouTube Live Control Room and provide the stream key through a protected environment variable or another secure method. Do not publish the key or expose it in logs. If you select another resolution or frame rate, change the output dimensions, frame-rate and GOP settings to match; a two-second keyframe interval means 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.

Match the rest of the encoder output

YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; it recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. For standard SDR, the listed guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. The example uses AAC and 128 Kbps.

Looping is not recovery

-stream_loop -1 repeats file input; it does not ensure the process, network, or YouTube event remains available indefinitely. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes real-time file input with FLV output to an RTMP destination. Its all-options documentation also describes FIFO output configurations that can keep processing at real-time rate during temporary failures and attempt recovery. These are operational mitigations, not guarantees that YouTube will preserve one live event or prevent outages.

Preflight checks for a continuous stream

  1. Check sustained upload capacity. Compare the upload rate you can maintain—not just a brief peak—with the chosen video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection and testing before you start.
  2. Test representative content. Run a test with the motion and audio your stream will actually contain. Inspect stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
  3. Confirm the received output. Check the resolution and frame rate shown in Live Control Room. YouTube can detect settings automatically; manual resolution selection is available through a custom stream key.
  4. Monitor both ends. For FFmpeg operation, watch process logs as well as YouTube’s stream-health display. FIFO recovery may help with temporary output errors, but it is not a service-level guarantee.
  5. Account for independent failure points. The source file, computer and thermals, power, local network, ISP, and YouTube event behavior can each interrupt a 24/7 broadcast. No bitrate setting removes those risks.

Common bitrate and streaming problems

Stream health warns about insufficient bitrate

Check the actual encoded resolution, frame rate, and codec against the applicable YouTube live table. A 1080p30 H.264 stream set below the 5 Mbps listed minimum is below YouTube’s stated floor; even a rate above the minimum may be unreliable if your upload connection cannot sustain it. Reduce resolution or frame rate to a suitable table row if needed, then test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload speed looks adequate, but the stream still drops

A speed test does not establish that your connection will hold the rate continuously. Allow headroom for audio and transport overhead, test for an extended period, and inspect both FFmpeg logs and Live Control Room messages. Local Wi-Fi, ISP instability, power, or a host issue may be responsible rather than the nominal bitrate alone.

Video is choppy or the encoder cannot keep up

Check whether the host can encode the selected resolution and frame rate in real time. A lower frame rate or resolution reduces encoding workload; choose the corresponding published bitrate row and run a representative test before returning to continuous operation.

The live output is not the expected resolution or frame rate

Confirm FFmpeg’s actual output settings and the values detected in Live Control Room. YouTube may detect settings automatically; if you need manual resolution selection, its guidance identifies a custom stream key as the available route.

The file repeats, but the broadcast does not recover

File looping and reconnection are separate concerns. Confirm whether FFmpeg is still running, inspect output errors, and configure and test any FIFO recovery behavior in the real deployment. Recovery attempts cannot guarantee platform availability or continuity of a single YouTube event.

Copyright and continuous-use checks

A working encoder does not grant rights to the video or audio being broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and encoder guidance alongside its applicable copyright rules. The encoder settings described here do not establish that a particular stream complies with copyright or other YouTube policies. Also, these settings do not establish a maximum uninterrupted live duration or an archive limit; do not assume a bitrate or FFmpeg recovery option makes an event perpetual.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than maintaining an FFmpeg host, StreamNeo runs uploaded recordings or playlists from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is a YouTube-only service for uploaded video, not a camera broadcast. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
