Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest fit if you want both a world to explore and a story shaped by consequential decisions. If discovery and combat freedom matter more than dialogue-driven branching, choose Elden Ring. Dragon’s Dogma 2 suits party-based action and tactical encounters, while Hogwarts Legacy is the pick for free roaming in the Wizarding World.

Which PS5 fantasy RPG best combines exploration and choice?
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the clearest all-around match among these four games. PlayStation’s description highlights exploration across the Forgotten Realms, including vertical journeys from the Underdark to the Upper City, and says the story is shaped by player choices, relationships, and the fate of the world. It also describes multiple tactical ways to handle encounters.

That combination makes it the best starting point if “choice” means more than selecting a build or deciding how to fight. The official page describes story decisions and character relationships as part of the experience, alongside exploration.

Choose by the kind of freedom you want
For narrative decisions and relationships: Baldur’s Gate 3
Choose this if you want story choices and character relationships to sit alongside exploration. PlayStation’s game page puts both at the center of its description, including the effect of decisions on the world’s fate. It also notes that encounters can be approached tactically rather than in only one way.
For world discovery and combat freedom: Elden Ring
Elden Ring is the better match when the freedom to roam and decide how to tackle exploration or combat matters most. Its official description emphasizes the scale and variety of the world, from open fields to intricate dungeons, as well as customized builds. It describes the story as fragmented and layered rather than emphasizing dialogue-driven branching in the way Baldur’s Gate 3 does.

PlayStation’s page says players may decide whether to fight some monsters or explore other options. Its description supports encounter-level decisions, but does not establish the breadth of branching story outcomes described for Baldur’s Gate 3.
For a Wizarding World adventure: Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy offers free roaming across familiar locations, with character development, relationships, and a stated decision about the wizarding world’s fate. What “choice” means in these recommendations
The games offer different kinds of freedom, and their official descriptions do not measure choice depth on a shared scale. Baldur’s Gate 3 has the strongest stated emphasis on narrative decisions and relationships. Elden Ring highlights freedom in exploration and combat; Dragon’s Dogma 2 highlights vocations, companions, and responses to encounters; Hogwarts Legacy combines character development and roaming with a decision affecting the wizarding world.
All four have official PlayStation pages for PS5. Store listings, regional editions, prices, subscription access, and physical availability can change, so check the platform and edition on the current listing before buying.
