Choose by the kind of play your family wants
For a shared cooperative story: Return to Dream Land Deluxe
This is the strongest general fit when several people want to play together on one console. Nintendo describes it as a 1–4 player platform adventure. In Story Mode, Player 1 leads while the other characters follow. The optional Helper Magolor gives double stamina and prevents falling; caregivers can turn the helper on or off. Nintendo’s family guide says each local player needs a Joy-Con. A free demo lets the group try it before committing.
#1 Best Overall
It remains an action platformer, and Nintendo’s US listing includes Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases. Review the store page and household purchase settings before a child plays.
For a 3D adventure with two players: Forgotten Land
Pick Kirby and the Forgotten Land if exploration in three dimensions matters more than having a large group. Nintendo lists one or two players on one system. In co-op, one person controls Kirby and the other Bandana Waddle Dee. Spring-Breeze makes play more forgiving by giving Kirby extra health and making enemies easier; Wild mode makes enemies tougher and provides more rewards. The free demo covers three stages and supports solo or two-player co-op.

For races and quick party rounds: Dream Buffet
Kirby’s Dream Buffet is built around food-themed races, minigames, and a final battle. Its player count depends on how you connect: one or two players on one system, two to four through local wireless, or one to four online. Nintendo’s US store lists it as digital-only, so it is not a physical-cartridge option there.
Rank #3
- Region-free, works on all Nintnedo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite consoles around the world
For battles: Kirby Fighters 2
Kirby Fighters 2 focuses on combat rather than a cooperative platforming journey. Families can choose free-for-all or team battles and also play Story Mode. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system and two to four through local wireless or online. Online play requires both a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Its US listing includes Mild Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases.
For boss fights with a free-to-start option: Super Kirby Clash
Super Kirby Clash centers on teamwork against bosses, with players taking different roles. It is free-to-start, but it includes equipment crafting, an in-game shop, and in-game purchases; “free-to-start” does not mean every option is free. Nintendo’s US listing also includes Users Interact. Caregivers should consider purchase controls and online settings before letting a child play, especially when using its online features, which require Nintendo Switch Online.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check player count, controllers, and online needs
- Count who will play on the same console. Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Star Allies, Kirby Fighters 2, and Super Kirby Clash support up to four players on one system. Forgotten Land supports two. Dream Buffet supports one or two on one system, with larger groups using local wireless or online play.
- Confirm controller requirements. Nintendo’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe family guide specifies one Joy-Con per local player. Controller needs and included accessories can vary by game and console setup, so check the chosen product’s instructions before buying extra hardware.
- Separate local play from wireless or online play. A same-system player count does not tell you how many systems or online memberships a different mode needs. In particular, Kirby Fighters 2 online requires a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online; Super Kirby Clash online features require Nintendo Switch Online.
- Check your region’s age-rating information. The violence and interaction descriptors in this guide are from Nintendo’s US listings, not universal age recommendations. Review the listing shown in your region.
- Try a demo if the fit is uncertain. Nintendo offers a free demo for Return to Dream Land Deluxe and a three-stage demo for Forgotten Land. Trying one with the intended players can help establish whether its pace and controls suit the group.
Physical or digital: what to know
Nintendo’s US store lists Kirby’s Dream Buffet as digital-only. Nintendo’s product pages establish Switch game products for Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Forgotten Land, and Star Allies; verify the exact edition and current availability in your region before purchasing. Store prices, stock, ratings, and product details can change.
