For a laptop or a drive you’ll carry between locations, choose a portable, USB-powered HDD. For a larger backup drive that can stay on a desk, consider a desktop HDD with its own power adapter. The right capacity depends on what you intend to copy; then check the exact model’s connector, current price and warranty before buying. The drive is only the storage destination—your Windows backup method determines what gets copied and how you restore it.
Which type of external hard drive fits your backup?
| Type | Power and portability | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable HDD | Usually powered over USB; compact and easier to carry. | A laptop, travel, or a backup drive that you’ll disconnect and store elsewhere. | Capacity, USB connector and cable, exact-SKU price and warranty. |
| Desktop HDD | Requires separate power; intended to stay on a desk and is less convenient to move. | A larger-capacity backup kept beside a desktop PC. | Power-adapter requirements, capacity of the local SKU, connection, price and warranty. |
Choose capacity based on the files or backup image you plan to keep, with room for future growth and any older versions you want to retain. A drive’s advertised capacity is not the same as usable free space after formatting. Retail prices, availability and warranty terms vary by exact model and region; compare the specific SKU rather than relying on a product-family name.

WD Elements Portable: a compact option
TechRadar’s 2026 guide names the WD Elements Portable its overall external-HDD pick. The guide lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 5TB models and a Micro-B USB 3.0 interface. In TechRadar’s tests, the drive averaged 114.0 MB/s sequential read and 109.0 MB/s sequential write. Those are the reviewer’s results, not a guarantee of the speed you’ll see; actual transfers depend on the particular drive, USB connection, workload and PC. Seagate Expansion: a desktop option for more capacity
TechRadar lists Seagate Expansion desktop models from 4TB to 24TB in its reviewed range and identifies the line as a high-capacity option. The guide says it requires external power, so it is less portable than a bus-powered drive, and reports strong performance among HDDs in its testing. These capacity and performance statements are the reviewer’s findings; availability and connections can vary by regional SKU. See the reviewer’s model details.
Choose this style when the drive can remain near a power outlet and you need more room than the portable models listed above. Verify the exact capacity, included power supply, interface, price and warranty for the model sold in your region.

What Windows backup will—and will not—put on the drive
Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 says an external hard drive or network drive may suit people without internet access or those storing many or large files. Cloud backup may be more convenient when you want access across devices. The external drive itself does not decide what is backed up: the selected Windows feature or other backup software does.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- File History is intended to preserve copies of selected personal files so they can be restored; do not assume it copies every installed program or system setting.
- A file backup is not automatically a complete, bootable system image. If you need recovery of Windows and applications after a disk failure, check that your chosen backup method explicitly supports that scope and understand its recovery process.
- Keep a backup drive disconnected when it is not being used if you want to reduce its exposure to accidental deletion, malware or electrical damage. A single external drive is still a single point of failure; important data should have another copy.
Microsoft describes Windows 7 Backup and Restore as a legacy option and recommends considering modern backup choices. Microsoft also states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Consult Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version before configuring backup or planning recovery: Choose a backup solution in Windows.
How to choose between the named drives
- Decide where the drive will live. Pick a portable, USB-powered model for a laptop or for storage away from the PC; pick a desktop unit if it can stay plugged in and you want a higher-capacity option.
- Estimate the space your backup needs. Count the files or image backups you intend to retain, then leave headroom for growth and older copies.
- Check the exact connection and power needs. For WD Elements Portable, the guide lists Micro-B USB 3.0. For desktop Seagate Expansion, plan for external power and verify the local unit’s supplied connector and adapter.
- Compare the exact SKU’s price and warranty. Retail prices and stock change, and the cited comparisons do not provide a stable current price set or a complete warranty comparison.
- Choose a backup method separately. Confirm what it copies and how restoration works; do not treat the drive purchase as a configured backup.
Reliability and vendor software
The available comparisons do not establish a robust, directly comparable long-term failure rate for these models, so a buying-guide award or a strong performance result is not evidence that one brand is inherently more reliable. Check warranty coverage for the exact SKU, keep another copy of irreplaceable files, and periodically verify that you can open or restore backed-up data.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Vendor software is optional unless you specifically want a feature it provides. For a straightforward Windows file backup, use the Windows backup method that matches your needs; for bundled cloud or photo services, review current eligibility and terms before treating a trial as part of the drive’s value.
