If your PC game is on CD or DVD, an external USB DVD drive is the practical choice. Choose an external Blu-ray drive only when the game disc itself is Blu-ray. Before buying, check the drive model’s Windows support and the exact game’s operating-system and copy-protection requirements: a drive can read the disc without making an older game install or run.
Which kind of external disc drive do you need?
Match the drive to the format printed on the game disc. CD/DVD and Blu-ray are distinct formats; Blu-ray capability is unnecessary for a game distributed on DVD. Manufacturers list supported formats by model, so check the product specifications rather than relying on a generic description such as “external disc drive.”

- CD or DVD game: Look for an external USB CD/DVD drive that supports the disc type. A DVD drive is the practical starting point for most CD/DVD game discs.
- Blu-ray game: Choose a Blu-ray-capable external drive. Confirm that its specifications also cover any other formats you need.
- Read or write: If you only need to install or access a game, read support may be enough. Check for writing support only if you also need to create discs.
For model-specific examples, Pioneer documents format support for its BDR-XD08EMBS and BDR-WX01DME. Those product pages are specifications, not a comparative test or a guarantee of current availability.

Check Windows support and your PC’s connection
Operating-system compatibility is model-specific. Check the drive manufacturer’s current support page and confirm the exact Windows version listed for the model. ASUS, for example, identifies particular external DVD and Blu-ray drives as Windows 11-compatible; it says relevant drives manufactured in or after 2020 and their bundled software can support Windows 11. Also check the drive’s USB connector and power requirements against the ports and power available on your PC. Do not assume that every drive uses the same connection or will work with every adapter or hub.
Will an external drive install and run the game?
Microsoft’s general software-installation instructions explicitly cover an external CD-DVD drive: “Insert the disc into your PC or external CD-DVD drive, and then follow the instructions on your screen.” If AutoPlay does not start, Microsoft advises checking AutoPlay settings or browsing the disc and running its setup file. Disc access and game compatibility are separate questions. The drive may appear in File Explorer and show readable files while an old installer or game fails because of copy protection, activation, a patch requirement, or changes in Windows. Microsoft Q&A threads document individual cases of readable game discs that would not install and older games that stopped playing after updates; they are examples, not a title-by-title compatibility database (installation case; post-update case).

How to check a game before buying a drive
- Identify the disc format. Check the label or packaging to determine whether the game is on CD, DVD, or Blu-ray.
- Identify the exact release. Editions and re-releases of the same game may have different installers, activation requirements, or patches.
- Check the game’s Windows requirements and publisher guidance. Look for information about supported operating systems, activation, and any official compatibility updates for that release.
- Match the drive model to your PC. Confirm its format support, Windows compatibility, USB connection, and power requirements in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- After connecting it, browse the disc if setup does not start. Check AutoPlay settings or open the disc in File Explorer and run the game’s setup file, following Microsoft’s general guidance.
- If installation or play still fails, investigate the game separately. Check publisher-supported patches or a legitimate current edition where available. A different optical drive is not a proven fix for DRM, activation, or game-executable problems.
Choosing between DVD and Blu-ray
