For an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy that needs active connections and strong range, the Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO-EA is the strongest pick in the available maintainer-reported comparison. The Seeed Studio XIAO W5500 V1.2 or later was reported close behind. If your devices only broadcast BLE advertisements, a supported, ordinary ESP32 development board may be a simpler Wi-Fi option. First check whether your devices need active connections; that determines which boards are suitable.
Choose a board based on what your Bluetooth devices need
A Home Assistant Bluetooth proxy extends Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) coverage by forwarding nearby device information to Home Assistant. The key distinction is whether a device only broadcasts advertisements or needs an active connection.

- Advertisement listening: enough for devices that periodically broadcast data and do not need to be connected to.
- Active GATT connections: needed when Home Assistant or an integration must connect to a device to read or write characteristics, or receive notifications through a subscription.
Home Assistant’s Bluetooth integration documentation supports ESPHome ESP32 devices as remote adapters and identifies separate firmware capabilities for listening, bundling, and active connections. It supports Bluetooth Low Energy; Bluetooth Classic devices are not supported by this integration.

| Board | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO-EA | Active connections and range, especially where an external antenna and PoE are useful | Ranked first in Home Assistant community maintainer J. Nick Koston’s reported active-range comparison. This is a maintainer’s real-world testing, not a controlled independent benchmark. |
| Seeed Studio XIAO W5500 Ethernet Adapter V1.2 or later | Wired Ethernet proxy with active connections | Only V1.2 boards produced after November 1, 2025 are identified as supported for active proxy use in the guidance cited by Koston. Check the exact board revision before buying. |
| GL-S10 | A named Ethernet alternative | Koston ranked it behind the two leading options and reported that its active Bluetooth range was typically 3–5 feet shorter in real-world use. This is an observation, not a formal benchmark. |
| Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO | PoE when an on-chip antenna is acceptable | It ranked behind external-antenna designs in Koston’s comparison. |
| Generic ESP32 development board | A straightforward Wi-Fi proxy for advertisement reception | Home Assistant documents ESPHome ESP32 proxies as supported remote adapters, but verify the exact board and required BLE capabilities against current ESPHome configuration requirements. |
The board rankings and range observations come from Koston’s December 2025 community comparison. They are useful selection guidance, not a promise that one board will outperform another in every building. Walls, placement, interference, and the Bluetooth device itself can affect practical coverage.

When the Seeed XIAO W5500 revision matters
Do not treat every XIAO W5500 as equivalent for active proxy use. Koston’s December 2025 post says that the Ready-Made Projects guidance supports only V1.2 boards produced after November 1, 2025 for active Bluetooth proxy use. The early-build hardware was not designed for stable active GATT proxying.
Passive advertisement proxying may work on early units if the W5500 polling interval is set to 1 ms, but active connections remain unstable on that hardware according to the same post. If buying the board for active connections, confirm the seller’s specific revision rather than relying on a product title that omits it.

- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
Wi-Fi, Ethernet, antenna, and placement trade-offs
A Wi-Fi ESP32 board can be convenient when you have a nearby power outlet and reliable wireless coverage. Ethernet boards avoid dependence on Wi-Fi at the proxy itself; PoE can also simplify power and placement where a suitable network connection is available. Choose based on where the proxy can be placed near the BLE devices, not just on the board’s headline specifications.

- External antenna: the Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO-EA led Koston’s reported active-range comparison; external-antenna designs ranked ahead of the on-chip-antenna Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO.
- Wired Ethernet: consider the Seeed XIAO W5500 V1.2+ or an Olimex board if wiring is practical. Confirm the Seeed revision for active use.
- Multiple coverage zones: Home Assistant combines local Bluetooth adapters and remote proxies in its Bluetooth panel, so you can use multiple scanners when one device cannot cover all locations.
Home Assistant’s documentation also notes that advertisement bundling reduces traffic between Home Assistant and the proxy, and reduces the time Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compete for airtime on devices that share a radio.

Check ESPHome capabilities before configuring the proxy
Home Assistant lists these minimum ESPHome firmware versions for ESP32 proxy capabilities. They are capability thresholds, not a recommendation to install an old release; use a currently supported ESPHome version and follow its current configuration requirements.
| Capability | Minimum ESPHome version listed by Home Assistant |
|---|---|
| Advertisement listening | 2022.8.2 |
| One active connection | 2022.9.3 |
| Multiple active connections | 2022.11.0 |
| Advertisement bundling | 2023.6.0 |
These thresholds are from Home Assistant’s Bluetooth integration documentation. Bundling is useful for reducing proxy traffic and airtime competition, especially on boards sharing a radio between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Should you upgrade from a GL-S10 to the Seeed board?
The available comparison does not establish a guaranteed or quantified improvement for every installation. Koston reported that the Olimex ESP32-POE-ISO-EA and Seeed W5500 performed very similarly for range and connection stability, while the GL-S10 was typically 3–5 feet shorter in active-range real-world use. That suggests a possible benefit when range is the constraint, but it is not an independently controlled head-to-head benchmark.
Best Value
- 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board
- Ultra-Low power consumption, works perfectly with the Arduino IDE
- Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
- SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
For an upgrade, the case is stronger if you need wired Ethernet, are deploying a revision-qualified Seeed V1.2+ board, or have a specific active-connection coverage problem. If the GL-S10 already provides stable connections where your devices are located, the reported difference alone is not enough to promise a meaningful improvement in your home.
Quick Recap
Practical selection checklist
- Identify whether each target device only advertises data or requires active GATT connections.
- Choose a supported ESPHome ESP32 configuration with the required capability, including multiple active connections if your use case needs them.
- Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on dependable network access at the best Bluetooth placement point; consider PoE if it simplifies power.
- If selecting the Seeed XIAO W5500 for active use, verify it is V1.2 or later and produced after November 1, 2025.
- Place the proxy near the BLE devices, then use Home Assistant’s Bluetooth panel to see the local adapters and proxies contributing coverage.
