There is no emulator setting that turns Chrono Trigger into a literal HD-2D game. The closest practical result is to preserve its 2D art and correct proportions, then add restrained CRT-inspired texture, scanlines, and a touch of glow. If you play the Steam PC version, compare its built-in Original graphics mode before adding a shader.
What “HD-2D” can—and cannot—mean for Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger remains a 2D game. Emulator filters can change how its pixels are displayed, but they do not add the layered 3D environments and other rendering associated with HD-2D. Think of the settings below as an HD-2D-inspired presentation: intact pixel art with controlled softness, contrast, and screen texture.

For the Steam PC version, Square Enix describes the built-in Original graphics option as closer in display style to the original game than the high-resolution character sprites and backgrounds. Compare that mode with the default presentation first; it may be all you need. See Square Enix’s Steam PC patch details.

Recommended starting settings
- Choose the source presentation. On Steam, compare Original graphics with the default high-resolution presentation before applying post-processing.
- Preserve the image’s proportions. In RetroArch with the Snes9x core, begin with the core-provided aspect ratio option. Avoid stretching the game to fill a widescreen display; unused side borders are preferable to distorted characters.
- Use integer scaling if it suits your screen. Integer scaling keeps pixel sizes even and is a useful baseline, particularly with repeating scanline effects. It can leave more unused screen area than a non-integer fit. That is a sharpness-versus-screen-size tradeoff, not a reason to stretch the image.
- Turn off bilinear smoothing when using a pixel shader. RetroArch’s configuration comments recommend disabling bilinear smoothing with pixel shaders. Start without it; add softness through the shader only if you want a less crisp image.
- Add CRT effects gradually. With CRT-Royale-ReShade, first align the effect’s content bounds to the actual game image. Then tune the phosphor mask and scanlines before adjusting contrast, halation or diffusion, bloom, and geometry.
- Check text and faces after every change. Compare a dialogue screen with a bright scene. Change one control at a time so it is clear which adjustment has helped or obscured detail.
How to tune CRT-Royale-ReShade
Fit the effect to the game image
If black bars or extra interface elements are included in the captured image, set the content bounds to the game picture. The project’s quickstart says this can also improve performance by letting the shader ignore parts of the screen that are not content.

Set mask and scanlines before glow
The quickstart gives phosphor-mask triad-width starting points of 3.0 at 1080p, 6.0 at 1440p, and 9.0 at 2160p. These are shader-guide starting values, not tested Chrono Trigger presets. After choosing a mask, set scanline strength conservatively, then adjust contrast and any halation, diffusion, or bloom. Too much glow or softness can bury the fine pixel detail you are trying to retain.
Keep geometry restrained
Curvature is optional, not a requirement for a CRT look. CRT-Royale’s documented settings include aperture-grille, slot, and shadow-mask options, plus geometry modes that can be disabled or set to spherical, alternate spherical, or cylindrical. Its settings file shows geometry off by default and an aspect-ratio value of 1.313069909 for the configuration shown; neither value is a universal recommendation. Consult the CRT-Royale user settings when you need to identify the available controls.

Choose the effect level that fits your priorities
| Priority | Starting choice | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Clean, sharp pixels | Correct aspect ratio, integer scaling where practical, and no shader | Less CRT texture; integer scaling may leave larger borders. |
| A light CRT impression | Modest mask and scanlines; minimal bloom and no or slight curvature | Effects add texture but may reduce clarity if pushed too far. |
| Softer analog character | Try the Snes9x core’s optional Blargg NTSC filter as a separate route | It is not required for an HD-2D-inspired look and produces a softer analog-signal aesthetic. |
| More shader detail | CRT-Royale’s full configuration | More demanding than the project’s faster alternative; no specific hardware benchmark is established here. |
| Lower shader cost or compatibility concerns | crt-royale-fake-bloom.cgh, or a documented Intel compatibility preset |
The fake-bloom version is much faster according to Libretro, while Intel presets disable some features. |
Libretro documents crt-royale.cgh as the full version and crt-royale-fake-bloom.cgh as a much faster alternative. Its CRT-Royale documentation also lists Intel compatibility presets. The CRT shader catalog provides context on the broader range of CRT effects.
Keep dialogue readable
A Steam Community discussion dated April 10, 2018, describes one player increasing scanline brightness because a darker effect hurt visibility; that player also found that pushing the adjustment too far looked smudged. Treat it as an example of personal preference, not a universal preset. Use a dialogue screen as a readability check, and back off if letters, facial features, or fine outlines become muddy. The discussion records that individual experience.

RetroArch and Snes9x reference points
RetroArch’s configuration comments cover bilinear smoothing, while Libretro’s Snes9x documentation lists core-level aspect-ratio options and the optional Blargg NTSC filter. Names and locations can vary with the RetroArch version and platform, so use those documents to identify the controls available in your setup rather than assuming every build exposes an identical menu. See RetroArch’s configuration file and the Snes9x core documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical stopping point
For a balanced presentation, keep the game’s proportions intact, use integer scaling if its borders are acceptable, disable bilinear smoothing when a pixel shader is active, and add only enough mask and scanlines to be visible without harming dialogue. Leave bloom and curvature low unless you specifically prefer a softer, more curved CRT look. There is no single best combination established across displays, GPUs, resolutions, and emulator versions, so judge the result on your own screen rather than treating a shader guide’s starting values as a tested game preset.
