Choose a color temperature for the room and camera
Kelvin (K) describes the warm-to-cool appearance of white light: lower values look warmer, while higher values look cooler. Elgato’s Key Light guidance offers the following useful starting points:

Wall color, background illumination, and other lights can change how a setting appears on camera. Make the final choice from the image your audience will see, rather than relying on the Kelvin number alone.
Set brightness by checking the camera image
There is no generally validated brightness percentage for every face, camera, room, and Key Light distance. Start with enough output to make your face clear, then lower it if your face looks overlit. Ambient light and background brightness also affect the balance.

Elgato’s Stream Deck how-to shows a 40% meeting-mode example; it is an example preset, not a universal recommendation. The light’s brightness can be adjusted in Control Center.
Position the light for a natural-looking face
One primary light
Elgato’s Getting Started with Key Light guide, dated December 15, 2020, advises placing a primary Key Light directly in front of you, just above eyeline, angled downward approximately 30 degrees. This puts the main light toward your face rather than lighting it from below.

Two lights
For a two-light setup, Elgato suggests placing one light on either side of the desk and aiming each toward your face at approximately 45 degrees. Its guide notes that this arrangement can reduce shadows and help illuminate a green screen or wall behind you.

Adjust and control the Key Light
Elgato Control Center provides the core controls: power, brightness, and color temperature. The original Key Light setup guide says pairing uses a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; once paired, the light can be controlled by devices on that network.

Stream Deck is optional. Elgato documents controls for power, setting or incrementing brightness, and setting or incrementing color temperature. Its how-to also describes a free six-key layout in Stream Deck Mobile. Use these shortcuts if you want quick controls or preset workflows; Control Center remains sufficient for ordinary adjustments.
