Best E-Ink Displays for ESP32 Projects: Sizes, Interfaces, and Compatibility

Choose an ESP32 e-paper display by exact panel model, connector, interface, and driver support—not by size or brand alone.

For a first ESP32 e-paper build, choose a documented SPI module or an integrated ESP32 display board, then verify the exact panel model, controller, connector, voltage, pinout, and matching driver example before buying. Size and brand alone do not establish compatibility: two panels with the same diagonal can require different hardware or software.

What makes an e-paper display compatible with an ESP32?

Compatibility is a match across the whole display path—not just the microcontroller and screen size. Check the panel’s exact part number and revision, controller, connector, electrical requirements, interface, and the driver or example code available for your chosen framework.

  • Interface: Many documented ESP32 examples use SPI, but e-paper modules do not all share one wiring scheme. Waveshare’s driver-board material describes both 3-wire and 4-wire SPI modes, while its wiki also mentions SPI/IIC. Confirm the interface and wiring for the precise module and board you plan to use. See the Waveshare E-Paper ESP32 Driver Board wiki and manual.
  • Connector and adapter: A raw panel may need a particular connector or adapter. Good Display describes its ESP32-M1 driver board for 24-pin serial SPI panels; that is an adapter-specific compatibility claim, not a promise that every panel of a listed size will work.
  • Driver and framework: Find code or a library example for the exact panel revision and your framework. A product page listing Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF support for an integrated display board does not establish that every standalone panel is supported by those frameworks.
  • Voltage and pins: Check the panel and driver-board electrical specifications and compare them with the ESP32 board’s supported levels and available pins. Do not infer safe wiring from connector fit or brand alone.

A useful pre-purchase check is to locate the exact panel model in the driver-board documentation and confirm that the example’s interface, wiring, and framework match your build. If any of those details are unclear, choose a more fully documented module or an integrated board rather than assuming a similar-looking part will substitute.

Which size and type should you choose?

Pick the screen by the physical space available and the amount of information it must show. Resolution matters alongside diagonal size: a small panel with modest pixel dimensions suits compact status text or simple graphics, while a larger or higher-resolution display can accommodate denser layouts. The products below are documented examples, not a complete market survey.

Small, straightforward SPI builds

The Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 is an integrated board with a 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 display, SPI, and stated Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF support. Because the ESP32 and panel path are bundled, it reduces the uncertainty of matching a separate raw panel and driver board. Check its product documentation for the board’s wiring and software details.

Color when the specific update behavior fits

The Waveshare ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54G is also listed as 1.54-inch and 200 × 200, with red, yellow, black, and white. Waveshare lists a 20-second full refresh and a 15-second fast refresh for this product. These are vendor specifications for this particular model and its stated modes—not general e-paper performance figures. Review the 1.54G documentation and decide whether its palette and refresh behavior suit the application.

These are portal-listed product examples, not a guarantee of current availability. Check current product documentation before choosing a model. The 6MOTION is not simply an ESP32 directly driving every display function: the portal describes an STM32H743 handling the display and peripherals, with an ESP32-C3 acting as a wireless co-processor. See the Espressif Developer Portal’s Inkplate overview.

Can you use a different Waveshare e-paper module?

Sometimes, but not merely because it is another Waveshare module or has the same screen size. The replacement must match the driver board’s supported panel/controller, connector, interface and wiring, and the software must include a driver for that exact panel variant. Waveshare’s E-Paper ESP32 Driver Board documentation lists compatible models and wiring information; compare your candidate against those lists rather than assuming interchangeability. A community question about using another Waveshare module illustrates why this is a common point of confusion, but it does not establish compatibility for any particular pair of products: the r/esp32 question.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the display job. Decide the useful physical size, required pixel dimensions, whether monochrome is enough, and whether color or touch is essential.
  2. Choose integrated or separate hardware. An integrated ESP32 display board can reduce connection and driver matching work. A raw panel plus adapter offers more flexibility but requires you to confirm connector and controller support.
  3. Record the exact part number and revision. Use the product’s model identifier, not just its brand, diagonal size, or appearance.
  4. Confirm the electrical and physical connection. Check interface, SPI mode if applicable, connector/pin count, voltage requirements, and the documented pin mapping for the exact board and panel.
  5. Find a matching software example. Confirm that the example or library covers the panel/controller revision and the framework you intend to use; do not extend one integrated board’s Arduino or ESP-IDF claim to unrelated standalone panels.
  6. Check display behavior against the application. For color models, inspect the actual palette and model-specific refresh modes. Do not treat one product’s vendor refresh figures as category-wide expectations.
