If you want a command line that is easier to read and use, consider fish for interactive guidance, Nushell for structured-data pipelines, or Xonsh for Python integration and a documented safeguard against searching the current directory for executables by default. None can be called categorically more secure than Ducksh on the available evidence: Ducksh’s security language is a stated project goal, not an independently verified result.
What Ducksh offers—and what its security claim establishes
Ducksh’s introductory article describes it as a shell for beginners and professionals, with goals of security, simplicity, and ease of use. It lists familiar commands such as cd, pwd, ls, and echo, along with descriptive aliases, command and path completion, history suggestions, and a ~/.quackrc configuration file. The article also gives an installation route and says the project is hosted on SourceForge. Read the Ducksh introduction.
Those details describe the project’s stated aims and features; they do not establish that Ducksh has undergone an independent security evaluation. The available documentation does not provide a threat model, code audit, or detailed security design. Treat “secure” as a goal, not a verified comparative security result.

Choose fish for a guided interactive shell
Fish is the best-supported fit if you want useful feedback and suggestions while typing commands. Its official documentation describes syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, tab completion, and navigable selection lists, and says it is designed to be usable without extensive configuration. Fish has its own shell language, so do not assume existing POSIX shell scripts will run unchanged. It is a choice for an interactive workflow, not automatically a drop-in replacement for scripts written for another shell.
Choose Nushell for structured-data pipelines
Nushell is designed around pipelines that carry structured data, making it possible to select, filter, and sort values directly rather than treating every result only as text. Its command reference documents built-in aliases and data operations. That model suits work involving structured results, but it also means learning Nushell’s own commands and pipeline conventions. As with fish, check compatibility before moving existing scripts. Nushell’s distinct command and pipeline model should not be presumed to accept shell scripts unchanged.
Choose Xonsh to combine shell commands with Python
Xonsh is a Python-based shell with integrated shell functionality and support for multiple operating systems. It may suit Python-oriented users who want a programmable environment alongside familiar shell commands. See Xonsh’s documentation.

Xonsh documents a specific command-resolution default: since version 0.16, it does not include the current working directory in the executable search path by default. Its platform guidance says adding . back is possible but not recommended. This is a concrete security-relevant behavior, not evidence that Xonsh is comprehensively secure. Read the platform guidance.
Two other documented controls can help in particular situations: --no-execute checks syntax without running a command or script, while --no-rc and --no-env start without rc files or environment setup. These options do not replace review of what a command will do. See Xonsh’s launch options.

What “secure shell” should mean in practice
Security can refer to different properties: preventing accidental execution, controlling how executables are found, limiting user capabilities, protecting secrets, or avoiding injection when another program invokes a shell. The available project documentation does not define one shared security benchmark or provide evidence for an overall winner among Ducksh, fish, Nushell, and Xonsh.
Compare specific behaviors relevant to your risk and workflow: how commands are resolved, what startup files or environment setup run, and whether a proposed command can be checked without executing it. Xonsh documents concrete defaults and options in these areas; that does not settle every other security concern. For context on why command-execution features deserve precise handling, DuckDB’s documentation warns that its interactive CLI’s .sh feature can execute arbitrary shell commands and advises against using that CLI for embedding. Before changing your shell
- Match the shell to your daily work. Pick fish for interactive prompts and completion, Nushell for structured-data transformations, or Xonsh for a Python-connected environment.
- Inventory scripts and habits. Identify which scripts depend on POSIX or another shell’s syntax, then check each candidate’s compatibility rather than assuming interactive usability means script compatibility.
- Check your operating systems and deployment constraints. Nushell and Xonsh describe broad, cross-platform availability, but confirm current package and system support for your actual environment before a production migration. Nushell; Xonsh.
- Review security behavior in context. Examine command lookup, startup configuration, environment setup, and execution behavior against your own threat concerns. Do not treat a project’s general security language as a substitute for evidence about the properties you need.
