Bethesda describes The Dark Ages as a prequel to both, so this order moves forward through the modern games’ release sequence. You can also jump straight to Eternal if your main goal is more recent DOOM combat rather than release order.
Start with DOOM (2016) for the modern-series path
DOOM: The Dark Ages launched on May 14, 2025, and Bethesda’s Steam product description calls it a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. That makes DOOM (2016) the most straightforward next game if you want to move through this modern arc in release order. The relationship is stated in the Steam listing for DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Play DOOM Eternal after the 2016 game to continue that modern pair. The order is a useful recommendation, not a requirement: each game can be chosen on its own if you are more interested in its combat than in following the arc sequentially.

Choose a route based on what you want next
| What you want | Recommended game or route | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Modern DOOM in release order | DOOM (2016), then DOOM Eternal | The Dark Ages is officially described as a prequel to both modern entries. |
| More recent DOOM combat right away | DOOM Eternal | It is the other modern entry named in the prequel relationship; you do not have to treat release order as mandatory. |
| Classic-era DOOM | DOOM (1993) and DOOM II through DOOM + DOOM II | The official combined release includes both games and adds the Legacy of Rust episode. |
| A different franchise branch | DOOM 64 or DOOM 3 | Both are included in Bethesda’s listed Anthology collection, beyond the modern pair. |
| A ready-made cross-era physical collection | DOOM Anthology | Bethesda’s Gear Store listing names six games and physical extras. |
Try DOOM + DOOM II for the classic games
If you want to see where the series began, the official DOOM + DOOM II page presents DOOM (1993) and DOOM II together. It also describes Legacy of Rust as “the newest episode for DOOM, and the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons.” That makes the combined release a practical starting point for the classic route rather than a choice between the original games.

Explore DOOM 64 or DOOM 3 for a different branch
DOOM 64
DOOM 64 is a good alternative when you want another classic-era entry rather than the modern pair. Bethesda includes it in the DOOM Anthology game list, and PlayStation’s product page also has a listing for the game: DOOM 64 on PlayStation. Platform storefronts and availability vary, so confirm the edition in your region.

DOOM 3
Choose DOOM 3 if you want to sample another distinct franchise entry instead of extending the modern sequence. It is also among the games named in Bethesda’s DOOM Anthology listing; the available material does not establish it as a required step between The Dark Ages and the modern games.
Consider DOOM Anthology if you want a physical collection
Bethesda’s Gear Store describes DOOM Anthology as a physical collection containing DOOM (1993), DOOM II, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition. The listing also includes a SteelBook case and a five-inch BFG replica. See the DOOM Anthology Gear Store listing for the product details; Bethesda says features and availability may vary by region.

Do not assume the physical collection and digital bundles have identical contents or availability. Bethesda Support says that, starting September 14, 2026, the Steam DOOM Anthology bundle is updated to include DOOM: The Dark Ages Premium Edition. The same notice says existing Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Anthology owners can continue to download and play their purchased versions, while the prior-generation bundle is no longer listed in digital storefronts. This update is specific to the Steam bundle and the notice’s named consoles, not a promise about every store or region: Bethesda Support’s DOOM Anthology notice.
