Best Don’t Starve Together Server Hosting in 2026: Managed Hosts, Self-Hosting, and Caves Explained

A practical 2026 guide to Don’t Starve Together hosting: when to use Host Game, how dedicated servers differ, what caves require, and which provider details to verify before paying.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence-based single “best” Don’t Starve Together (DST) host for every group in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you need a server online when nobody is playing, want Forest and Caves together, require mod support, and prefer paying for convenience or managing the machine yourself.

For a quick private world, use DST’s in-game Host Game option. For permanent control, run a dedicated server on your own hardware. A managed rental is the least hands-on route. The currently documented commercial candidates are GPORTAL, BisectHosting, and Shockbyte; their product pages establish advertised features and sample prices, not independent speed, uptime, or reliability rankings.

Choose the hosting model before choosing a company

DST can be played cooperatively without renting a server. Your three practical models are in-game hosting, a self-managed dedicated server, and a managed game-server rental. They solve different problems.

In-game Host Game

Start DST, choose Host Game, create or select a world, and enable the Caves option if you want an underground world. Klei documents this route and notes that Forest and Caves run as multiple server processes rather than as one lightweight toggle. Your computer is both a player client and the host, so the world normally depends on that machine and player being online. This is usually the simplest and cheapest choice for a small group that plays at scheduled times.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Klei warns that hosting Forest and Caves simultaneously is CPU-intensive and needs a “beefier computer setup.” See the official explanation at Klei’s caves and hosting help.

Self-hosted dedicated server

A dedicated server runs separately from the people playing. You supply the computer, operating system, internet connection, storage, updates, configuration, backups and troubleshooting. It can be economical if you already have suitable hardware and are comfortable maintaining it, but your group depends on your power, network and administration.

Managed rental

A host supplies the server hardware and control panel for a recurring fee. You still choose the world settings, mods and backups, but the provider handles the physical machine and much of the operating-system work. This is the most convenient option for a persistent world, friends in different time zones, or anyone who does not want to leave a home PC running. Godlike.Host offers Don’t Starve Together servers with its own game panel, a built-in mod installer, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket.

What the documented 2026 hosting options actually establish

The available evidence supports comparing three commercial candidates, but not declaring one fastest, cheapest, most reliable or otherwise “best.” Their own pages are vendor claims; no like-for-like performance test, renewal-price audit, cave test or uptime study is established here.

Provider Advertised or displayed information Verify before paying
GPORTAL Its DST page displayed a 6-slot plan at $10.49 per 30 days and a 10-slot plan at $15.99 per 30 days when viewed October 13, 2026. The listing also advertises backup space, NVMe hardware and rapid setup, and displays a 3-day option. Checkout price, currency, taxes, renewal terms, selected region, Forest-and-Caves configuration, backup retention and independent performance. View the GPORTAL DST listing.
BisectHosting The dedicated DST page advertises mod support, 24/7/365 help and 21 international locations. Its general game-server listing showed DST starting at $11.99 when crawled October 13, 2026. Whether the starting price is still current and comparable, plus billing term, currency, renewal cost, regional inventory, plan resources, caves setup and backup policy. DST product page and general listing.
Shockbyte Its DST page describes private and public servers and mod support. Current price, locations, cave configuration, included resources, backup terms, support channels and any performance commitment. Shockbyte DST page.

Prices and availability can vary by location, currency, taxes, billing term and checkout date. A displayed starting price is not the same as a guaranteed renewal price. Record the exact plan, region and renewal amount before completing payment.

How much does a DST server cost?

The documented offers provide reference points rather than a market-wide price. GPORTAL showed 6 slots for $10.49 per 30 days and 10 slots for $15.99 per 30 days on October 13, 2026. BisectHosting’s general listing showed DST starting at $11.99; the listing did not establish an equivalent slot count, term, currency or renewal price. Shockbyte’s cited page did not establish a price.

  • Monthly, quarterly or annual billing term.
  • Displayed currency, taxes and payment fees.
  • Introductory versus recurring renewal price.
  • Player-slot limit and whether additional slots cost more.
  • Backup storage, mod support and control-panel features included in the plan.
  • Cancellation, refund and server-deletion rules.

A cheaper headline number can be poor value if it has fewer slots, no usable backups, an inconvenient region or a sharply higher renewal charge.

Calculate the real monthly cost

For a fair household or group comparison, write down the first invoice and the expected recurring invoice separately. Add taxes and any paid backup or extra-slot option. If you self-host, include electricity, a replacement drive, internet service and the value of your time maintaining the machine. In-game hosting may have no server bill, but it still uses the host’s computer and connection. A managed plan can cost more in cash while saving many hours of setup and troubleshooting.

Do not treat a three-day or other short trial display as a monthly equivalent. Confirm whether it is a separate product, whether it converts to a renewal automatically, and what happens to the world when the term ends.

Why Forest and Caves change the hardware decision

Klei states that hosting a Forest and Caves world requires multiple servers at the same time, is CPU-intensive and needs a more capable computer. That matters for both a home machine and a rented plan: a plan sized only for a basic Forest world may not provide comfortable headroom for caves, several players and mods.

The official Klei caves article explains the architecture and the in-game caves option. Ask a managed provider specifically whether its DST configuration supports both instances, how they are started, and whether caves consume extra slots or resources.

Questions to ask about caves

  • Can Forest and Caves be enabled together on the selected plan?
  • Is cave setup a control-panel option, a support request or manual configuration?
  • Are both instances included in the quoted price?
  • What happens to CPU or memory allocation when caves are active?
  • Can you restore the complete world if one instance fails?

Self-hosting requirements: treat old minimums as a floor, not a target

Klei’s requirements page, updated July 25, 2025, lists dedicated-server figures of 1.7+ GHz processor, 1+ GB RAM and 1+ GB disk space. Those are published legacy minimums, and the page includes old operating-system entries. They should not be treated as a current buying recommendation for a modern Forest-and-Caves world with mods. Read the full Klei requirements page for the qualifications.

Klei also warns that insufficient host hardware can hurt both host and client performance. Your practical capacity depends on the world configuration, number of connected players, caves, mods, background workloads and network quality. Leave headroom rather than designing to the listed minimum.

Use this self-hosting checklist

  • A supported, maintained operating system and current DST server files.
  • Enough CPU capacity for Forest and, if enabled, the additional Caves process.
  • More memory and disk space than the legacy minimum, with room for world saves, logs, mods and backups.
  • A stable wired or otherwise reliable internet connection and a reachable server configuration.
  • A backup destination separate from the live world.
  • A plan for updates, restarts, access control and monitoring when nobody is home.

How to make a dedicated DST server

The work is less about buying a particular brand of hardware than building a repeatable operating routine. Choose a maintained machine that can run the server without competing with someone’s daily game, install the current dedicated-server files using Klei’s documentation, and create a separate service account or restricted login where your operating system supports it. Configure the world, player access and any mods, then launch a test Forest world before adding caves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the basic world works, add caves and watch for CPU, memory, storage and connection problems while several players join. Set an update and restart schedule, keep logs, and copy saves to a different disk or machine. Document how to stop the service safely and how to restore a known-good save. If friends cannot connect, check the server’s reachability and access configuration methodically rather than repeatedly changing world settings.

How to set up an in-game DST world

  1. Open DST and select Host Game.
  2. Create a new world or select an existing world slot.
  3. In world settings, enable the Caves option if your group wants underground content.
  4. Apply the settings and launch the world.
  5. Invite the other players through the game’s normal invitation or join flow.
  6. If performance deteriorates, disable caves or reduce the load before blaming the internet connection; caves require multiple server processes on the host machine.

This route avoids a recurring server bill, but the host must be available and capable of running the game and server workload together. It is sensible to make a backup of an established world before changing caves, mods or major settings.

How to evaluate a managed host before ordering

1. Match the region to the group

Select the data-center region closest to most players, then verify the exact location offered at checkout. Geographic proximity is a reasonable latency expectation, not a measured guarantee. If friends are spread across continents, choose the location that minimizes the largest group of players’ delay rather than relying on a marketing map.

2. Confirm slot and resource limits

Check player slots, CPU or memory allocation if disclosed, storage limits and whether caves or mods alter those limits. “Unlimited” labels do not replace a stated resource allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Inspect mod workflow

Determine whether mods can be installed from a workshop-style interface, uploaded as files, or configured manually. Ask whether you can edit world settings and configuration files and whether a mod update can be rolled back. BisectHosting and Shockbyte advertise mod support on their cited DST pages; confirm the exact process for your chosen plan.

4. Demand precise backup terms

Find out whether backups are automatic, how many are retained, where they are stored, whether they are included, and how a restore is requested. GPORTAL’s page advertises backup space, but the cited listing does not establish retention duration or restore procedure.

5. Check support channels and hours

“24/7/365 support” is an advertised coverage claim, not a response-time guarantee. Confirm whether help is available by ticket, live chat or another channel and whether support handles caves, mods and world restoration.

6. Read the commercial terms

Confirm renewal price, billing interval, taxes, currency, cancellation process, refund eligibility and what happens to the world after nonpayment. Save a copy of the order summary because plan pages and promotions can change.

Mods, caves and backups: the failure points to plan for

Mods

Mods can change CPU, memory, loading time and compatibility requirements. Keep a known-good backup before adding or updating several mods at once. If a world stops loading, revert the last change rather than deleting the save immediately. Check whether the panel exposes the configuration files you need and whether you can remove a broken mod without losing the world.

Caves

Caves add a second server workload. If the host supports Forest only, enabling caves may fail, consume resources unexpectedly or require a different plan. Confirm support before purchase and test a fresh world before moving an established save. Ask whether a restart of one instance affects the other and whether support can diagnose a cave-specific failure.

Backups

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Test the restore path while the world is disposable, document who can request it, and keep an independent copy when the provider’s terms permit. Do not assume advertised “backup space” means automatic, long-retained snapshots. Check the newest available restore point and whether restoring replaces the live world or creates a separate copy.

A practical decision framework

Choose in-game hosting when

  • The same person is usually online to start the world.
  • The group is small and does not need 24-hour availability.
  • You want to avoid a monthly bill and server administration.
  • Your computer can handle the game plus the world workload.

Choose self-hosting when

  • You already own a spare, stable machine and understand maintenance.
  • You need control over files, settings, updates and backups.
  • You can provide dependable power, networking and access security.

Choose a managed rental when

  • Players need to join while the usual host is away.
  • You want a control panel and provider support rather than operating-system work.
  • You need a documented path for mods, caves and restores.
  • The recurring fee is worth avoiding hardware and maintenance costs.

What “best” means for different groups

Priority Most suitable route What to verify
Lowest recurring cost In-game hosting, if scheduled play is acceptable Host computer performance and availability
Always-online world Managed rental or a dedicated machine Renewal terms, region, backups and restart policy
Forest plus Caves A host or machine explicitly sized for multiple server processes Caves support, CPU headroom and restore coverage
Heavy mod use Managed plan with file/configuration access or capable self-hosting Mod installation, updates, rollback and resource limits
Maximum control Self-hosted dedicated server Security, updates, monitoring and independent backups

Common buying mistakes

  • Choosing a plan from the lowest advertised price without checking its term, currency or renewal.
  • Assuming a general game-hosting page proves that every region or resource tier is available for DST.
  • Buying a Forest-only configuration and expecting caves to work without additional resources or setup.
  • Reading “mod support” as a guarantee that every mod, update or rollback workflow is supported.
  • Paying for backup space without confirming automatic snapshots, retention and restoration.
  • Interpreting a support-hours claim as a guaranteed response time or performance SLA.
  • Designing self-hosted hardware around Klei’s old minimum figures instead of leaving capacity for caves, players and mods.
  • Moving an established world to a new configuration without first testing a copy and preserving a known-good save.

Bottom line on the documented providers

GPORTAL is the only cited listing with concrete displayed slot prices: $10.49 per 30 days for six slots and $15.99 per 30 days for ten, viewed October 13, 2026. BisectHosting documents mod support, 24/7/365 help and 21 locations, with a separate listing showing DST from $11.99. Shockbyte documents private/public server options and mod support, but the cited page does not establish price. None of these facts proves a performance winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase, shortlist the provider whose checkout gives your group the right region, caves configuration, mod workflow, backup retention and renewal price. If those details are unclear, in-game hosting or a self-managed server may be more transparent than choosing from an attractive headline offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Don’t Starve Together server hosting in 2026?

There is no verified universal winner. Compare GPORTAL, BisectHosting and Shockbyte on renewal cost, region, caves support, mod workflow, backups, slots and support terms. Their product pages are vendor claims, not independent performance tests.

How much does a DST server cost?

GPORTAL displayed six slots for $10.49 per 30 days and ten slots for $15.99 per 30 days on October 13, 2026. BisectHosting’s general listing showed DST starting at $11.99, but not an equivalent slot count or renewal price. Check currency, taxes, billing term and recurring price at checkout.

Which DST hosts support caves?

Klei explains that Forest and Caves require multiple server processes. Ask any managed host whether both instances are supported on your exact plan, how caves are enabled, what resources they receive and how a complete restore works. Do not infer caves support from a generic DST listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I host a DST server with mods?

Yes, but the workflow and limits vary. BisectHosting and Shockbyte advertise mod support on their DST pages. Confirm whether mods are installed through a panel or file upload, whether configuration files are editable, and whether updates can be rolled back safely.

How do I make a dedicated server for Don’t Starve Together?

Use a maintained machine, install the current dedicated-server files according to Klei’s documentation, configure the world and player access, test Forest first, then add caves and mods while monitoring resources. Set up updates, restarts, logs, access controls and independent backups before inviting the group.

Are Klei’s 1.7 GHz, 1 GB RAM and 1 GB disk figures enough?

They are published legacy minimums from Klei’s requirements page, updated July 25, 2025, not a modern recommendation. Forest plus Caves, several players and mods need headroom, and Klei warns that inadequate host hardware can affect both host and client performance.

Is managed hosting cheaper than self-hosting?

A managed rental has a clear recurring fee, while self-hosting can use hardware you already own but adds electricity, networking, storage, maintenance and backup responsibilities. Compare the total cost and your time, not only the monthly headline price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does 24/7 support guarantee fast help?

No. BisectHosting advertises 24/7/365 help, but coverage is not a response-time guarantee. Check the available contact channels and whether support handles caves, mods, restores and world-specific configuration.

The Bottom Line

Pick the hosting model first. Use Host Game for scheduled small-group sessions, self-host a dedicated server when you want control and have the skills, or rent a managed plan for persistent availability. Among the documented providers, verify the exact checkout price, renewal terms, region, Forest-and-Caves support, mod access and backup restoration instead of assuming any listing is automatically the best.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
