Best DNS Settings for Fire TV Stick: Public DNS vs. Your ISP

For most Fire TV Stick owners, the router or ISP DNS is the right default. Learn when a public resolver is worth testing and how to undo a change safely.

For most Fire TV Stick owners, the best DNS setting is the one already supplied by the router or internet provider: leave it alone if apps and other services connect normally. If you have a specific DNS lookup problem, you can test a public resolver such as Google Public DNS, but there is no evidence here that it universally speeds up streaming or stops buffering.

What DNS does—and what it cannot fix

DNS translates a service’s domain name into an IP address so a device or app can find it. Google describes DNS as a directory that maps domain names to IP addresses in its DNS help documentation.

DNS is only one part of an internet connection. It is not the same as Wi-Fi signal strength, the bandwidth provided by your ISP, or the video bitrate a streaming service delivers. A DNS change therefore is not a general-purpose fix for weak Wi-Fi or buffering.

ISP DNS or public DNS: which should you use?

There is no universal winner established for every Fire TV Stick, ISP, location, or network. Use the working default unless you have a reason to test an alternative. Consider a public resolver only as a controlled troubleshooting step or because you have chosen a particular resolver after checking its operator’s current information.

Choice When it makes sense What to keep in mind
ISP/router DNS Streaming apps and other services work normally. No available comparison establishes that every ISP resolver is fastest or slowest.
Google Public DNS You are testing a possible DNS lookup issue or prefer a public resolver whose setup details are documented. Google lists 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; these are setup addresses, not a performance ranking or guarantee of better streaming.
Another public resolver You have checked the operator’s official current addresses and policies and want to try that service. Verify its details directly with the operator; the available evidence does not support a provider speed, reliability, or privacy ranking.

Google’s Public DNS setup guidance documents 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. An Amazon staff forum response also gives those addresses as an example for Fire TV DNS troubleshooting; it does not show that they outperform ISP DNS.

How to test Google Public DNS on a Fire TV Stick

Fire TV menus can differ by model and software version. Amazon’s general Fire TV Stick setup help explains connecting to Wi-Fi but does not establish one DNS-change path that applies to every stick. The path below is reported in an Amazon staff forum reply for a troubleshooting scenario; your menus may differ.

  1. Record your current settings. Write them down or take a photo before making changes. Google’s Public DNS instructions recommend recording the old configuration so you can restore it.
  2. Open the network options. The reported route is Settings > Network > your Wi-Fi network > Network Options > IP Settings.
  3. Select Static and enter the DNS addresses. The staff reply describes switching IP Settings to Static and entering Google Public DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Follow any additional fields or prompts shown on your particular device; do not assume every Fire TV software version presents the same options.
  4. Check the result. Try the app or service that had the lookup problem, then confirm other services still connect. If the menus do not match or the connection fails, restore the recorded configuration rather than guessing at network values.

Changing DNS on the Fire TV Stick affects that device’s configuration; changing DNS in a router’s settings is a separate, network-wide task. Use the instructions for the device or router you actually have.

If changing DNS breaks the connection

A custom resolver that is entered incorrectly or cannot be reached may interrupt internet access. Restore the previous working DNS or network configuration you recorded before the test. If you cannot reconnect or are unsure which settings to restore, follow the setup guidance for your model or contact your ISP; the Amazon staff forum response also suggests contacting the ISP when needed.

When buffering continues

If apps still buffer after DNS is back on its working setting, investigate the connection itself: Wi-Fi signal and interference, the router, and the internet service can affect streaming independently of DNS. The cited sources do not show that switching to public DNS improves video bitrate, adds bandwidth, or resolves weak wireless coverage.
