Best Destiny 2 Settings for Smoother Performance on PC

A practical, evidence-based method for smoother Destiny 2 performance on PC: verify requirements and GPU assignment, test in-game changes with the FPS counter, configure frame caps and NVIDIA Reflex carefully, and troubleshoot overlays or CVARS safely.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no Bungie-published graphics preset that is best for every PC. The most reliable route to smoother Destiny 2 performance is to verify that the computer meets the game’s requirements, make sure the game is using the intended GPU, remove incompatible overlays, then change one in-game option at a time while watching the built-in FPS counter. Only after those checks should you consider the documented frame-cap or NVIDIA Reflex CVARS, because Bungie warns that CVARS editing is generally not suggested.

The practical answer: tune for consistency, not a universal preset

A higher peak FPS number does not automatically produce a smoother game. A useful setup is one that delivers consistent frame times on your hardware, avoids sudden drops in demanding scenes, and does not add unnecessary latency or background conflicts. Bungie’s official documentation explains the available controls, but it does not publish a current, comparative low-, mid-, and high-end graphics preset or a table of expected FPS gains for individual options.

That means the correct method is adaptive: establish a baseline, change a single variable, repeat the same test, and keep the change only if it improves consistency without creating a new problem. The steps below use the settings and checks Bungie documents, while clearly separating documented behavior from choices you must evaluate on your own PC.

1. Confirm that the PC and GPU are suitable

Use Bungie’s requirements as a floor

Bungie’s Destiny 2 on PC System Requirements page lists minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, and storage baselines. The figures that are explicitly useful here are 6 GB of RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. These are eligibility baselines, not promises of a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics quality, or frame-time consistency.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Use the live requirements table to compare your exact processor and graphics adapter rather than treating an old “recommended” label as a high-refresh target. A machine that barely clears the minimum can run into drops in busy activities even when the game launches normally. No official source cited here provides a current benchmark showing what FPS a particular requirement tier should deliver.

Understand the laptop qualification

Bungie says laptop configurations are not officially supported. A laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements may still be able to play, but its result depends on cooling, power mode, driver behavior, and whether the game is running on integrated or discrete graphics. Avoid interpreting a laptop’s advertised GPU name as proof that Destiny 2 is using that adapter.

Check which GPU Windows assigns to Destiny 2

Systems with both integrated and discrete graphics can start the game on the lower-power adapter. Bungie specifically warns that under-spec integrated graphics can cause gameplay performance problems. Its current known-issues guidance calls out Intel 12th-generation Iris laptop systems and recommends selecting the discrete GPU and High Performance for Destiny 2 in Windows Graphics Settings. That mitigation is documented for the affected configuration; it is not a universal guarantee for every hybrid-graphics PC.

  1. Open Windows Settings.
  2. Go to System and then Display.
  3. Open Graphics (the label can appear as Graphics settings on some Windows builds).
  4. Add or select the Destiny 2 executable in the app list.
  5. Choose Options, select High performance, and save.
  6. Restart the game and verify behavior again in the same test scene.

If the discrete adapter is missing from the list, update the operating system and graphics driver, connect the laptop to AC power, and check the manufacturer’s power-management utility. Those steps do not guarantee a fix, but they remove common causes of a system silently preferring integrated graphics.

2. Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings

Use the built-in FPS counter

Turn on Destiny 2’s own FPS counter if it is available in your current game interface. It avoids relying on third-party framerate or statistics overlays, which Bungie says are generally incompatible. Record the displayed FPS and, more importantly, note when it falls during the same activity.

Test one scene repeatedly

Choose a repeatable location or activity that represents the problem: a busy social space, a public event, or a combat encounter with many effects. Let the scene settle, observe the counter for a consistent interval, and write down the usual and lowest readings. Do not compare a quiet menu with a firefight; the workload is different. After each change, return to the same scene and use the same display mode, resolution, and power state.

Change one control at a time

Apply one graphics-menu change, test, and keep it only when the result is measurably more consistent or solves the specific stutter. Changing several options at once makes it impossible to identify which control helped or caused a visual regression. The exact option names and their performance ranking can change with game updates, and the official material available here does not establish a current ranking. Adjust only options that appear in your installed version of Destiny 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Tune the in-game graphics menu without guessing at a “best” preset

Start with the game’s current graphics menu and your observed baseline. If a setting visibly reduces image detail or effects, compare the resulting frame-time behavior in the same scene rather than assuming a lower value is always better. Some systems are limited by the GPU, others by the CPU, memory, thermals, or background activity, so the same preset can behave differently on two PCs.

  • When FPS is consistently low: lower one image-quality or effect option that is available in your menu, retest, and stop when the frame rate becomes consistent enough for your display.
  • When FPS is high but uneven: investigate frame capping, power mode, thermal throttling, overlays, and GPU assignment before reducing every quality option.
  • When the image is acceptable but input feels delayed: evaluate the documented NVIDIA Reflex choices if you have a supported NVIDIA GPU and driver, rather than assuming that uncapping FPS will solve latency.
  • When drops occur only in one activity: use that activity as your test case; an average number from a quiet area may conceal the actual problem.

Bungie does not provide a current official preset for “low-end,” “mid-range,” and “high-end” PCs in the cited documentation. Do not present a particular combination of shadows, textures, field of view, resolution scaling, or effects as a Bungie recommendation without a current, controlled test that identifies the game build, hardware, resolution, and scene.

4. Choose a frame-cap strategy

Bungie documents frame-cap behavior in its CVARS Guide: CVARS Troubleshooting and Setting a Framerate Cap. The guide describes these values:

CVARS value Documented behavior How to interpret it
0 Restores the default cap of 200 frames per second. A defined ceiling, not a measured performance target.
A value above expected frame-rate bounds, such as 10000 Fully uncaps the frame rate. Useful only as an experiment; it is not a universal smoothness recommendation.
A custom cap within your system’s capability Uses the ceiling you specify. Choose based on the consistency you observe on your own display and hardware.

The 200 FPS figure is a configuration default documented by Bungie, not a benchmark. Uncapping can increase power use, heat, fan noise, and frame-time variability on some systems. Conversely, a cap that is comfortably attainable can make delivery more consistent. Bungie documents how the values work, not one optimal value for every monitor or PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to edit the cap cautiously

  1. Exit Destiny 2 completely.
  2. Open File Explorer and navigate to the preferences folder under C:UsersUSER_NAMEAppDataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs, replacing USER_NAME with your Windows account name.
  3. Back up CVARS.xml before editing it.
  4. Open the file in a plain-text editor and change only the frame-cap entry, using the values and syntax described in Bungie’s CVARS guide.
  5. Save the file, launch Destiny 2, and test the same scene with the built-in FPS counter.
  6. If the game behaves worse or settings become unreliable, restore the backup or follow the reset procedure in the troubleshooting section below.

Bungie says CVARS modification is generally not suggested and is at the player’s discretion. Treat this as an advanced diagnostic or customization step, not the first fix for ordinary stutter.

5. Configure NVIDIA Reflex only on compatible hardware

Bungie’s NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency Guide for Destiny 2 PC says Reflex is enabled by default on systems with a supported NVIDIA graphics card and game-ready driver. The relevant low_latency_mode CVARS values are:

Value Mode Documented trade-off
0 Reflex off May provide a slight frame-rate increase, at the expense of latency.
1 Default Reflex mode The standard low-latency behavior on supported systems.
2 Reflex with Boost Overrides GPU power-saving features and may provide a slight additional latency reduction, with potentially higher power use.

Do not force these values on unsupported hardware. If you already have a supported NVIDIA card and current game-ready drivers, leaving the default mode in place is the least intrusive choice. Try the off or Boost modes only when you have a specific latency or power-management reason and can compare the same scene before and after.

6. Remove overlay and capture conflicts

Bungie’s Destiny 2 PC and Third-Party Application Feature Compatibility guidance says some overlays, including framerate and statistics overlays, may not be compatible. If performance falls after launching a third-party application, disable features that inject into the game. If the problem remains, close the application and test Destiny 2 by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a supported capture method for the display mode

Destiny 2 display mode Capture methods Bungie documents
Exclusive fullscreen Hardware capture, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, or AMD ReLive.
Windowed modes OBS or XSplit screen capture or window capture.

Capture compatibility depends on the window mode. If recording is the only reason an overlay is active, choose the capture method that matches your mode instead of adding an unsupported framerate overlay to monitor performance.

7. Reset broken settings with CVARS.xml

If key bindings, graphics, or another setting causes a crash or makes the game unusable, Bungie says deleting CVARS.xml should be the first troubleshooting step. Its guidance is explicit: “When players encounter issues with key binding, graphics, or other settings, deleting their CVARS.xml file should be the first step to troubleshooting the issue.”

  1. Close Destiny 2.
  2. Open C:UsersUSER_NAMEAppDataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs.
  3. Delete CVARS.xml (or move it to a backup folder if you want to preserve it).
  4. Relaunch the game so it can generate a fresh file with default settings.
  5. Reapply only the changes you can verify, testing after each change.

Deleting the file resets custom player settings, so expect to configure controls and graphics again. Keep the operating system and graphics drivers updated while troubleshooting, as Bungie also recommends in its CVARS guidance.

8. A decision guide for common symptoms

Symptom First checks Next controlled change
Very low FPS on a laptop Compare the PC with Bungie’s requirements and confirm the discrete GPU is selected in Windows Graphics settings. Lower one current in-game graphics option and retest the same scene.
Stutter appears when an overlay or recorder starts Disable injecting features and close the third-party application if necessary. Use the capture method documented for your display mode.
High FPS but inconsistent delivery Check thermals, power mode, background applications, and GPU assignment. Test a sensible custom frame cap instead of immediately uncapping.
Input feels less responsive on supported NVIDIA hardware Confirm the game-ready driver and supported GPU. Compare Reflex default, off, or Boost behavior using the documented CVARS values.
Graphics or bindings cause crashes after editing Restore the backup or delete CVARS.xml. Relaunch with defaults, then add changes one at a time.

9. What these settings cannot promise

The available Bungie pages establish requirements, GPU-selection guidance for a narrowly described Intel 12th-generation Iris laptop issue, CVARS behavior, Reflex modes, and third-party compatibility rules. They do not establish a current multi-PC benchmark, a universal frame-rate gain from any setting, or a graphics-menu ranking that applies across all hardware tiers. Results depend on the installed game build, resolution, display mode, drivers, CPU and GPU limits, memory, cooling, and background software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, avoid claims such as “this preset guarantees 144 FPS” or “uncapping always makes Destiny 2 smoother.” Use the built-in counter and a repeatable scene to decide whether a change helps your system. If the computer remains below the published baseline or continues using inadequate integrated graphics, a discrete GPU may be necessary; compare your exact hardware with Bungie’s current requirements before buying anything. No specific GPU model is identified by the official material above as a universally appropriate upgrade.
