The best desktop workstation depends on what you need it to do. StorageReview’s lab-tested 2026 roundup identifies the HP Z8 Fury G6i for maximum expansion, the Dell Precision 7875 for CPU-heavy work, the Dell Pro Max Tower T2 for single-GPU rendering, and Lenovo and HP systems for mid-range and compact builds. Its results also show why a bigger GPU count or a processor’s headline specs alone can mislead: application behavior and the exact configuration matter.

Best desktop workstations for different needs

These are workload-specific recommendations, not a universal ranking. StorageReview says its reviewed desktops were tested in its lab using workloads including SPECworkstation, SPECviewperf, Blender, V-Ray, LuxMark, y-cruncher, 7-Zip, and Geekbench. The figures below describe its 2026 review configurations, not every configuration sold under the same model name.

Need Pick Why it stands out Price or configuration context
Maximum expansion and multi-GPU capacity HP Z8 Fury G6i StorageReview names it best overall. Its tested dual-GPU configuration scored 11.17 in SPECworkstation Graphics and 7,351 Blender GPU samples per minute. StorageReview says the chassis supports up to four RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q cards, with aggregate VRAM up to 384GB. $74,878 for StorageReview’s tested configuration.
CPU-heavy workloads Dell Precision 7875 StorageReview names it best for CPU-heavy work. Its reviewed 96-core Threadripper PRO 9995WX system outperformed the cited Xeon system in the roundup’s Blender CPU rendering and 3DMark CPU tests. The reviewed configuration had two RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs and 192GB VRAM; a price was not stated in the roundup.
Single-GPU rendering Dell Pro Max Tower T2 StorageReview names it best single-GPU workstation. Its reviewed 600W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell delivered 8,025 Blender GPU samples per minute. StorageReview verified a $1,474 configurator starting price on August 14, 2026. That is a starting price, not the review system’s price.
Mid-range tower Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2 The reviewed Core Ultra 9 285 and RTX 5000 Ada configuration scored 30,760 in Cinebench R23 multi-core and 3,884 Blender GPU samples per minute. $7,939 for the tested configuration.
Compact small-form-factor workstation Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra SFF Gen 2 The under-four-liter system pairs a Core Ultra 9 285 with an RTX 4000 SFF Ada. Its compact GPU produced less than half the rendering rate of the P3 Tower’s RTX 5000 Ada in StorageReview’s tests. $4,128 for the tested configuration.
Mini workstation with integrated graphics HP Z2 Mini G1a StorageReview’s reviewed 2.8-liter configuration used a Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395, integrated Radeon 8060S graphics, and 128GB unified memory. HP lists configurations up to 128GB LPDDR5 memory and 8TB storage. HP’s U.S. page listed a $1,999 starting price when accessed; vendor prices and available configurations may change.

Source: StorageReview’s 2026 desktop-workstation roundup, updated September 14, 2026, and HP’s U.S. desktop-workstation lineup. StorageReview’s results apply to its disclosed review configurations; they are not guarantees for other builds or applications.

What the benchmark results mean for your workload

More GPUs do not automatically make one job faster

In StorageReview’s Blender GPU test, the Dell Pro Max Tower T2’s single full-power 600W RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell scored 8,025 samples per minute. The HP Z8 Fury G6i’s tested dual-Max-Q setup scored 7,351 samples per minute. This comparison shows that GPU count alone does not predict performance on a particular workload. Results depend on the graphics cards, their power limits, and whether the software can use multiple GPUs efficiently; they should not be generalized to every rendering application.

Choose a CPU for the work your software performs

StorageReview reports that the Precision 7875’s Threadripper PRO 9995WX led the Z8 Fury G6i by 50–66% in its Blender CPU workloads and by 43% in 3DMark CPU. The tested Xeon platform led in some other reported tasks, including 7-Zip and small-model inference. That variation is a reason to check benchmarks for your actual application rather than choosing by processor brand or core count alone.

How to choose a workstation configuration

  1. Start with your software and workload. Identify whether the work is primarily CPU rendering, GPU rendering, CAD, visualization, simulation, or another task. Confirm the application’s current hardware requirements and whether it can use multiple GPUs.
  2. Match the CPU and GPU to that work. For CPU-heavy jobs, compare results in the specific applications you use. For GPU workloads, look beyond card count to the exact GPU model, power envelope, VRAM, and multi-GPU scaling.
  3. Set memory and storage needs. Decide how much system memory and local storage your projects require, and whether your workflow needs ECC memory. Check the exact build: product-family maximums are not the same as a model’s base or reviewed configuration.
  4. Check the physical constraints. Compare chassis size with your available workspace, then verify expansion slots, ports, and upgrade options against the peripherals and future additions you need. A small chassis can limit GPU choice or performance, as the P3 Ultra SFF comparison illustrates.
  5. Compare the exact SKU and current price. Prices in the table are either review-configuration prices or dated vendor/configurator starting prices. Confirm what a current listing includes and check support terms directly with the seller or manufacturer.

How much does a desktop workstation cost?

Prices span a wide range because a workstation’s cost depends on its processor, graphics, memory, storage, and chassis. StorageReview describes serious single-GPU builds as generally costing $4,000–$13,000 as tested, and multi-GPU flagships as $30,000 and up. Those are the roundup’s broad descriptions of tested systems, not fixed market-wide price bands. Its tested ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2 cost $7,939, while its HP Z8 Fury G6i configuration cost $74,878.

Those are listed options, not a specification that every Z2 Tower G1i includes. Check the chosen SKU’s components against the needs of your applications.

What about a Mac workstation?

PCMag’s September 15, 2025 guide update named the Apple Mac Studio (2025, M3 Ultra) as its workstation-grade Mac desktop pick. That is a dated reference to a 2025 roundup, not evidence of a current 2026 configuration or ranking. If you are considering a Mac, compare the exact model and software support you can buy now with the application-specific needs in your workflow.
