Best Dashlane Alternatives in 2026: Choose by Control, Features, and Plan Limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Dashlane alternative depends on what you want to change: a lower-cost hosted vault, stronger privacy extras, or complete control of a local database. Bitwarden and Proton Pass are the clearest cloud-synced candidates in the available evidence; KeePassXC is the distinct offline option. 1Password, Keeper, and NordPass are reasonable names to investigate, but their current consumer-plan details require a fresh check before you move a vault.

Start with the decision that matters most

Choose between a provider-managed service that synchronizes your vault for you and a local encrypted file that you manage yourself. Hosted services are generally simpler across phones, computers, and browsers. A local database can reduce dependence on a provider, but you become responsible for backups, device access, and synchronization.

  • Want a practical hosted replacement with flexible plans? Evaluate Bitwarden.
  • Want a free multi-device starting point, masked email aliases, or Proton integration? Evaluate Proton Pass.
  • Want an encrypted database stored under your control with no subscription? Evaluate KeePassXC.
  • Want another mainstream hosted service? Include 1Password, Keeper, or NordPass only after checking their current official plans and migration support.

A price concern or an unsettling news report can be a valid reason to review your setup, but an anecdotal discussion is not evidence that one product is universally safer. Compare the controls and limits that affect your own accounts.

Shortlist at a glance

Alternative Best fit Sync model Free option in cited materials Notable capabilities Important qualification
Bitwarden People seeking a multi-device cloud vault and plan flexibility Provider-hosted synchronization Yes; verify which features are free Password storage across devices, family sharing, hardware-key support on Premium and Families Plan-specific limits apply; confirm current regional pricing and renewal terms
Proton Pass Users wanting a free multi-device start, masked email aliases, or the Proton ecosystem Provider-hosted synchronization Yes Unlimited logins, notes, cards, and devices on Free; hide-my-email aliases and passkeys; paid monitoring and sharing features Country, plan, and feature availability can differ
KeePassXC Technically comfortable users who prefer a local encrypted database Local file; you arrange any cloud storage or synchronization Free software; no subscription Offline database under the user’s chosen storage control No managed sync or remote server; backups and recovery are your responsibility
1Password, Keeper, NordPass Readers who want to investigate additional established services Generally hosted, subject to each provider’s current design Not established here Recognizable alternatives for further comparison Do not assume current features, prices, device limits, or import coverage without checking official pages

Bitwarden: flexible hosted replacement

Bitwarden is a sensible first comparison for someone leaving Dashlane who still wants automatic synchronization among computers, phones, and browsers. Its official comparison describes password storage across devices and family sharing. Premium and Families plans list support for up to ten hardware security keys for two-step login.

Choose Bitwarden if

  • You want a conventional cloud vault rather than managing a database file.
  • You need household sharing and broad device access.
  • You may use hardware security keys for account protection.

Proton Pass: privacy extras with a free starting tier

Proton lists a Free plan with unlimited logins, notes, cards, and devices, plus ten hide-my-email aliases and passkey support. That combination makes it attractive when the goal is more than storing passwords: aliases can reduce exposure of your real email address, while passkeys can replace passwords on compatible sites.

Choose Proton Pass if

  • You want to test a multi-device service without immediately paying.
  • Masked email addresses are important to your privacy workflow.
  • You already use Proton services and value a unified account ecosystem.

KeePassXC: local control instead of managed synchronization

KeePassXC stores credentials in an encrypted database file at a location you choose. The project says it does not host remote servers or provide managed synchronization; you can place the file in a private or public cloud, but arranging safe access and conflict-free synchronization is your job. In the project’s words, “Your passwords remain encrypted at all times and no data is stored on remote servers, so you stay in full control of your data.”

KeePassXC’s site says version 2.7.9 received France’s ANSSI First-level Security Certification (CSPN), recognized in France and Germany. That statement applies to that version and certification scope; it is not a blanket certification of every release or every setup.

How to compare alternatives before moving

Free-tier usefulness

“Free” does not describe the same product experience everywhere. Check the number of devices, sharing capability, attachment or alias limits, and whether security reports or support features require payment. Bitwarden and Proton Pass have free options in the cited materials, but their included features differ.

Platform and browser coverage

List the operating systems, phones, browsers, and work or family devices you actually use. Confirm native apps, browser extensions, passkey behavior, and any restrictions before exporting from Dashlane.

  • PREMIUM QUALITY & PERFECT MEDIUM SIZE: This password journal comes with a high-quality leatherette hardcover, an elastic band, pen holder, ribbon bookmarker, and inner accordion pocket. It measures 5.2 inches wide and 7.6 inches long, which is the perfect size for your needs.

Sharing and household needs

Compare family or vault sharing, permission controls, emergency access, and what happens when a member leaves. A single-user plan may be inadequate for a household even when its password storage is unlimited.

Privacy and monitoring extras

Masked email aliases, dark web monitoring, attachments, and an integrated authenticator can be valuable, but they are separate capabilities. Verify whether each is included in the exact plan you would buy.

Authentication beyond the master password

Check supported second factors, recovery options, and hardware-key compatibility. Bitwarden’s plan table lists hardware keys among its two-step methods, while Yubico sells Security Key devices. A key works only where the service and account support its protocol, so confirm compatibility before purchasing one.

Price and renewal

Do not rely on an old comparison or a promotional first term. The authoritative figure is the provider’s current checkout for your region, currency, billing period, taxes, and renewal. The available evidence does not establish an apples-to-apples current consumer renewal price for all products named here.

Migrate from Dashlane without leaving readable credentials behind

  1. Check the destination’s import method first. Proton Pass documents importing passwords exported as CSV from another manager. Bitwarden publishes a Dashlane-specific import help route.
  2. Review what the importer accepts. Determine whether logins, secure notes, cards, attachments, folders, sharing permissions, and history are supported. The documented routes do not promise perfect transfer of every record type.
  3. Export only when ready. Treat the CSV or other export as readable credentials. Store it temporarily in a protected location and do not send it through ordinary email or shared folders.
  4. Import and inspect the destination vault. Open representative logins, important notes, payment cards, and shared items. Test autofill and sign-in on several devices.
  5. Handle the old vault deliberately. Keep Dashlane available until critical records work in the new service, then sign out or close the old account according to your retention needs.
  6. Delete the plaintext export. Remove the file from local storage and empty recycle or trash locations. Check cloud sync, downloads, and backup folders for copies.

Should you also consider 1Password, Keeper, or NordPass?

Yes, if you have a specific reason—such as an employer or family already using one of them—but treat them as candidates for a fresh comparison, not as a ranking established here. Before migrating, verify each provider’s current personal and family features, platform support, free-plan limits, Dashlane import path, regional price, and renewal price on its official site. No current, complete consumer-plan comparison for all three is established in the available evidence.

What to decide before you export

  • Whether you want provider-managed cloud synchronization or a local file.
  • Which devices and browsers must work on day one.
  • Whether family sharing, emergency access, aliases, monitoring, or attachments justify a paid tier.
  • Which second factor you will use and whether a hardware key is compatible.
  • How you will verify imported records and destroy the plaintext export.
  • The provider’s current regional price and recurring renewal amount.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
