Deleting a category does not delete its posts: WordPress assigns affected posts to the default category.
What “move a category” means in WordPress
WordPress categories can have parent and child relationships. Changing a category’s parent changes where it sits in that hierarchy; it does not, by itself, change the category assignments on individual posts. If your goal is to change which posts are filed under a category, edit the posts’ category assignments instead.
Change a category’s place in the hierarchy
- In the dashboard, go to Posts → Categories.
- Find the category and choose Edit. Use the full edit screen if you need to change its parent; available fields in Quick Edit can vary.
- Choose the intended Parent Category. Select the top-level option if you want the category to have no parent.
- Save the change, then check the category list and the site’s navigation or category archive to confirm the hierarchy looks right.
Change which posts belong to a category
Edit the relevant posts and adjust their category selections in the post editor. Reparenting a category is not a substitute for changing those selections. The exact controls can vary with the editor and site setup.
How to rename a category
- Go to Posts → Categories and choose Edit or Quick Edit beside the category.
- Change the category’s name. Category names must be unique across the site, including categories that have different parents.
- Review the Slug separately before saving. WordPress uses the slug in the category URL, so changing the name and changing the URL are distinct decisions.
- Save, then check the category archive and any site links that point to it.
Quick Edit is a convenient option for a simple adjustment when it exposes the field you need. The full Edit screen is the safer choice when you also need to inspect the parent or description. Do not assume that a name change will always change the slug, or that changing a slug will automatically redirect the previous URL; the behavior and redirect setup are not established as universal.

How to delete a category without deleting posts
WordPress’s documented behavior is that deleting a category leaves its posts in place and assigns them to the default category. The default category itself cannot be deleted, so check the fallback before removing a category.
- Go to Posts → Categories. Review the category’s post count and open the count link if you need to inspect which posts are affected.
- Check the default under Settings → Writing. If the current default is not suitable for affected posts, select a more appropriate default before deleting the category.
- Delete the category from its row. To remove several categories, select them and use the bulk Delete action.
- Check the affected posts’ category assignments and review navigation or links to the category archive.
The reassignment is important: a post can remain published while no longer carrying the category you deleted. If you need affected posts assigned to a particular replacement category, review and update those posts’ assignments rather than relying on deletion as a way to choose that replacement.

What to check after a rename, move, or deletion
- Hierarchy: Confirm the category appears under the intended parent, if any.
- Post assignments: Confirm the right posts still have the categories you intend, especially after deletion.
- URLs and links: Category links lead to archive pages. If a live slug changes or a category is deleted, check internal links and configure redirects where appropriate. WordPress documentation does not establish a universal automatic redirect or search-engine outcome for either change.
- Default category: Remember that it is the destination for posts affected by category deletion, and cannot itself be deleted.
