For a dependable internet server, start with sv_minrate 8000, sv_maxrate 25000, sv_minupdaterate 30, sv_maxupdaterate 100, sys_ticrate 100, and sv_unlag 1. On the client, begin with rate 25000, cl_updaterate 101, cl_cmdrate 101, ex_interp 0.01, and net_graph 3. These are starting points, not guarantees: server caps, route quality, CPU load, frame pacing, plugins, and the player’s connection determine the final result.
Recommended baseline configuration
Put the following in the server’s server.cfg as a conservative starting point for a public internet server:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
// server.cfg
sv_minrate 8000
sv_maxrate 25000
sv_minupdaterate 30
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sys_ticrate 100
sv_unlag 1
Players can start with these client commands:
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101
ex_interp 0.01
net_graph 3
The server values establish the permitted range. The client values are requests inside that range; a player cannot force a server to accept a higher rate or updaterate than its configuration allows. Apply one change at a time and watch the network graph during both quiet play and busy firefights.
What “smooth” means in Counter-Strike 1.6
Several systems affect how smooth CS 1.6 feels, and they can fail independently:

Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Server simulation: the server calculates game frames and sends world updates. A busy CPU, overloaded host, or poorly behaved plugin can make this irregular.
- Network delivery: rate and updaterate determine how much information is requested and how often snapshots are sent. Congestion or an unstable route produces choke or loss.
- Client command delivery:
cl_cmdratecontrols the requested frequency of commands sent from the player to the server. - Rendering and frame pacing: a client can have a good connection yet feel uneven because its frame rate fluctuates or synchronization introduces delay.
- Interpolation and lag compensation:
ex_interpaffects how snapshots are displayed, whilesv_unlag 1keeps the server’s lag-compensation system enabled.
Changing a graphics option will not repair packet loss, and raising a network rate will not fix a client that cannot render frames consistently. Diagnose the symptom before changing a variable.
Server settings, limits, and trade-offs
| Setting | What it controls | Baseline | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
sv_minrate |
Lowest bytes-per-second receive rate the server permits for a client | 8000 | A high floor can exclude slower or unstable connections. |
sv_maxrate |
Highest bytes per second the server will send to an individual client | 25000 | Higher is useful only when the client and route can sustain it. |
sv_minupdaterate |
Lowest snapshot frequency the server permits | 30 | An aggressive minimum can hurt players on weak links. |
sv_maxupdaterate |
Highest snapshot frequency the server permits | 100 | Clients cannot receive more updates than this cap. |
sys_ticrate |
Maximum server calculation frames per second | 100 | Higher values consume CPU and are not an automatic smoothness switch. |
sv_unlag |
Enables server lag compensation when set to 1 | 1 | Related compensation behavior includes controls such as sv_maxunlag. |
sv_maxrate and sv_minrate
sv_maxrate is a per-client byte-per-second ceiling. Raising it does not create bandwidth, reduce physical latency, or improve a route that is already dropping packets. It only allows a capable client to request and receive more data. The baseline of 25,000 is commonly used in current CS 1.6 configurations, but the effective value remains subject to the server, host bandwidth, and client connection.

The suggested floor of 8,000 is a compromise for a general internet server: it discourages extremely low settings without assuming that every player has a fast, stable connection. If your audience includes weak wireless or long-distance connections, test the floor with those players before raising it. A floor that is too high can manifest as choke for the people it was intended to help.
sv_maxupdaterate and sv_minupdaterate
Updaterate is measured in snapshots per second. sv_maxupdaterate 100 allows up to 100 updates each second, while sv_minupdaterate 30 stops clients from requesting an extremely low frequency. More snapshots can make movement and hit information feel more current, but each additional update requires the connection and server to keep up.
The CVar reference lists a default sv_maxupdaterate of 30 and a default sv_minupdaterate of 10. Those defaults are not the same as the recommended public-server baseline. If a host, plugin, or inherited configuration resets either value, inspect the live value rather than assuming that server.cfg was decisive.

sys_ticrate: why 100 is a sensible starting point
The CVar reference documents a default of 100 and a range from 0 to 1000 for sys_ticrate. It is the maximum number of server calculation frames per second, not a promise that the server will achieve that number. Setting it above 100 can increase CPU work and expose instability; it does not automatically lower ping or guarantee better hit registration.

If the host cannot maintain the requested cadence, increasing the ceiling only adds pressure. Treat values above 100 as a capacity decision that must be validated on the actual machine and player load, not as a universal upgrade.
sv_unlag and compensation
Keep sv_unlag 1 for a normal internet game so lag compensation remains enabled. Compensation helps account for network delay when the server evaluates player actions, but it cannot repair loss, a saturated connection, or a server that is missing its simulation deadlines. The CVar reference also documents related controls such as sv_maxunlag; change those only when you understand the server’s intended compensation policy.
Client rates: requests, not overrides
Use this as a starting client configuration:
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101
ex_interp 0.01
net_graph 3
rate
rate is the number of bytes per second the client asks to receive from the server. The cited CVar reference lists a default of 20,000 bytes per second and a documented range of 1,000–20,000, while current CS 1.6 configuration guides commonly suggest 25,000. Because these figures do not line up across references and server builds, treat 25,000 as a request to test, not a guaranteed accepted value. The server’s sv_minrate and sv_maxrate still win.
cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate 101 requests 101 snapshots per second, and cl_cmdrate 101 requests 101 command packets per second. A server capped at sv_maxupdaterate 100 will not deliver 101 snapshots, so the extra one in the client request is harmless but cannot bypass the cap. If the connection cannot sustain the requested traffic, reduce the request until choke stops rather than assuming that the largest number is best.

ex_interp
ex_interp controls interpolation delay between received snapshots. The configuration guide lists 0.01 as a low-delay starting point, but its practical value depends on the server and the client’s update stream. The ValveSoftware discussion associated with issue #3109, opened June 1, 2021, records conflicting community interpretations of automatic and manually calculated interpolation; it does not establish one universal value. Use 0.01 as a testable starting point, then evaluate the graph and in-game consistency rather than treating it as a guarantee.
Install and verify the server configuration
- Open the server’s active
server.cfg. Make sure you are editing the file used by the running instance, not a similarly named file in another installation or map directory. - Add the six baseline server commands exactly as shown. Keep each command on its own line and save the file.
- Restart the server or reload the configuration through the administration method you already use. A file that was edited but never loaded cannot affect players.
- In the server console, enter each CVar name without a new value to print its live value. Check
sv_minrate,sv_maxrate,sv_minupdaterate,sv_maxupdaterate,sys_ticrate, andsv_unlag. - Join from a client and print
rate,cl_updaterate, andcl_cmdrateto confirm what the client is requesting after the server has applied its limits. - Repeat the check after a map change, plugin reload, or host migration. Plugins and host-level settings can alter effective limits after the initial configuration loads.
If the console shows a different value than the file, look for a later configuration, a plugin, a host control panel setting, or a server restriction that is being applied after server.cfg.
Use net_graph 3 before changing anything else
Set net_graph 3 and record four observations: FPS, ping, choke, and loss. Take one reading during quiet movement and another during a firefight or other busy scene. Change one variable at a time and allow enough play to see whether the symptom is repeatable.
- FPS fluctuates while ping, choke, and loss remain stable: investigate rendering and frame pacing rather than network rates.
- Choke appears: the requested traffic is not being delivered smoothly. Reduce
rateor updaterate in small steps until the connection sustains the stream, then verify that the server is not forcing an unsuitable minimum. - Loss appears: investigate the route, Wi-Fi, ISP, or server host. Raising
rateorcl_updaterateblindly can increase congestion and will not repair packets already being lost. - Ping is high but choke and loss are absent: the route may simply be geographically long or congested. CVar changes cannot remove that physical delay.
- All clients report problems at once: inspect server CPU load, host networking, plugins, and the active configuration before asking every player to change local settings.
The red indicators and synchronization symptoms discussed by ValveSoftware are evidence to investigate, not proof of one specific cause. Collect observations before selecting a fix.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
1. Confirm the intended file is active
Print every server value in the console. If even one is unexpected, fix the load order first. Tuning a file that the running server never reads wastes every subsequent test.

2. Check server capacity before raising sys_ticrate
Observe CPU utilization and server FPS during the heaviest expected player activity. Keep sys_ticrate 100 unless you have a clear capacity reason to test another value. A higher ceiling with insufficient CPU can make stability worse.
3. Separate choke from loss
With net_graph 3 enabled, first lower the client’s requested rate or updaterate if choke is the repeatable symptom. If loss remains, stop rate tuning and investigate the physical or provider path: wired versus wireless connection, local congestion, ISP routing, and the server host.

4. Test rendering independently
When the graph shows inconsistent FPS without network errors, test gl_vsync 0, gl_dynamic 0, and cl_minmodels 1. Lower decals and effects if necessary, and choose an fps_max value your machine can hold consistently. These changes can reduce rendering load; they are not packet-loss remedies. Some servers override restricted client variables, so confirm the effective value after joining.
5. Recheck after environmental changes
Map changes, plugin updates, configuration reloads, and a move to another host can change the effective limits. Repeat the same quiet-play and firefight measurements after each event instead of relying on an old result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and why they fail
Using the biggest possible numbers everywhere
High values are not automatically better. The server must transmit the data, the route must carry it, and the client must process it. If any link in that chain is weaker, excessive requests can show up as choke or unstable play.
Best Value
Assuming a client can bypass a server cap
It cannot. Server configurations can cap rate, cl_updaterate, and cl_cmdrate. If a server permits no more than 100 updates, setting a client request to 101 does not create an extra update.
Raising sys_ticrate to fix ping
sys_ticrate changes the maximum simulation cadence, not the physical route between players and the server. A higher value can consume more CPU without changing network latency.
Changing graphics variables to cure loss
VSync, dynamic lighting, models, decals, effects, and FPS limits affect rendering. They do not repair an ISP route, Wi-Fi interference, a congested uplink, or an overloaded game host.
Copying one interpolation value as a universal rule
ex_interp 0.01 is a useful starting point from a current guide, but interpolation depends on the update stream and server behavior. The available ValveSoftware discussion contains competing interpretations, so validate the result on the server you actually play.
Hosting and player-population decisions
The baseline is intended for a general public internet server, not every possible audience. A private server for nearby players on reliable wired connections may sustain more demanding requests than a public server serving distant players over mixed links. Conversely, a community that includes slower connections may need a lower minimum rate or updaterate than the baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen selecting a dedicated game-server host, compare CPU headroom, network quality, location relative to the intended players, configuration access, and behavior under peak load. The label “100 tick” or a large bandwidth figure alone does not prove that a CS 1.6 instance will remain stable. Verify the live CVars and observe the graph with real players.
What the available documentation actually establishes
Valve’s networking documentation describes the roles of client rate values and server caps but does not publish one official CS 1.6 “best settings” preset. The CVar reference at txdv.github.io, accessed in 2026, documents the meanings and several defaults and ranges, including rate default 20,000 with a stated 1,000–20,000 range, sv_maxupdaterate default 30, sv_minupdaterate default 10, and sys_ticrate default 100 with a 0–1000 range.
The current configuration guide supplies the practical starting values used in this article and warns that server settings can cap client requests. ValveSoftware issue #3109, opened June 1, 2021, captures community questions about ex_interp, rates, FPS, and sys_ticrate, but its discussion is not a universal Valve endorsement. Steam Support directs players toward community-created configuration guidance for technical issues. No controlled independent benchmark or official performance guarantee establishes that this preset will lower ping, guarantee a fixed FPS, or deliver perfect hit registration.
