Short answer: Dokploy is the closest like-for-like Coolify replacement for a VPS. Choose Dokku for a Git-push workflow, CapRover for a dashboard built around Docker Swarm, Kamal for repository-defined command-line deployments, and Portainer when you need broad container administration rather than a full platform-as-a-service.
Replacing Coolify is not simply a matter of finding another web panel. The important decision is where deployment state lives, how applications are built, whether several servers must be coordinated, and which operational tasks—backups, rollbacks, permissions, monitoring and previews—the platform handles for you. A small personal VPS has different needs from a team running production services across multiple nodes.

What a Coolify replacement needs to preserve
Coolify is the baseline because its documentation takes a broad container-first approach: “if Docker can package it, Coolify can run it.” The documentation also describes more than 300 open-source one-click service templates, including Docker-image databases and other common services. That makes Coolify feel like an application platform, not merely a container start button. Its official documentation is at coolify.io/docs.
Use these questions before selecting an alternative:
- How will you deploy? A dashboard, a Git push, or commands executed from a repository all produce different ownership and audit models.
- How portable is the application definition? Docker Compose is valuable when an existing stack already describes services, networks, volumes and environment variables. A platform with a different manifest may require conversion.
- How many machines are involved? A single VPS is simpler than a multi-server arrangement, and some tools treat additional nodes as a scheduler or orchestrator concern rather than a UI feature.
- Which operations are built in? Backups, rollback, preview environments, monitoring, notifications, team roles and scheduled jobs can remove substantial manual work.
- Who owns the control plane? With every self-hosted option, you still administer the operating system, access, updates, firewall, storage, DNS, certificates and incident response.
Dokploy: the closest like-for-like alternative
Dokploy is the strongest first choice when the goal is to replace Coolify without abandoning a web-based platform workflow. Its official comparison lists a UI, Docker Compose support, multi-node and multi-server operation, database support, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, teams, notifications, custom build servers, volume backups and preview deployments. Those are the same categories that make Coolify useful to people who do not want every deployment to be a hand-written SSH session.
Why Dokploy fits an existing Compose stack
If your applications already have Compose files, preserving that description can be more important than adopting a new build convention. Compose expresses multiple services together, so the application, worker, database connection, network and persistent volumes can remain recognizable during migration. Dokploy’s listed Compose support reduces the conceptual translation required compared with a platform that expects a different application model.
Where Dokploy adds platform features
The comparison lists environments, teams, notifications and custom build servers in addition to deployment basics. Environments help separate development, staging and production configurations; teams and notifications address collaboration; a custom build server can move image-building work away from a small production VPS. Preview deployments are useful when each change needs an isolated, reviewable instance. Volume backups matter because backing up a database dump alone does not preserve uploaded files or other persistent application data.
When to select it
- You want a dashboard rather than a CLI-only workflow.
- Your projects are already described with Docker Compose.
- You expect more than one server or node eventually.
- You need built-in concepts for teams, environments, previews, monitoring or rollback.
- You prefer one platform to expose operational tasks that would otherwise become scripts.
The comparison establishes these capabilities, but it does not provide a universal memory minimum or guarantee that every application will fit on a particular VPS. Size the server for the workloads, databases, image builds and backup retention you actually run.

Dokku: the simplest Git-push model
Dokku is the better answer when “deployment” should mean pushing a branch to one server. Its official installation documentation describes it as “an extensible, open source Platform as a Service that runs on a single server of your choice.” The documented workflow can build an application from a Dockerfile or automatically detect a supported language with buildpacks. Read the current requirements at Dokku’s installation documentation.

How the Dokku workflow differs from Coolify
Dokku does not provide the same dashboard-centered experience. You work through its API and CLI, connect a Git remote, and let a push trigger the build and release process. That is attractive for developers who want deployment history and configuration to remain close to the repository, but less convenient for a team that expects to click through service settings, preview deployments or user management.
Schedulers and memory
Dokku documents a minimum of 1 GB of system memory when using its Docker scheduler. Its K3s scheduler requires 2 GB on every node. These are documented minimums, not a promise that a busy application, database or build workload will be comfortable at that size. Leave headroom for the operating system, image layers, logs, swap policy and concurrent builds.
Integrations and multi-server use
The comparison lists API/CLI access, GitLab and Gitea integrations, scheduled jobs and multi-server operation through Dokku’s scheduler. Those features make Dokku more capable than a purely single-process deployment script, while the single-server design remains its clearest mental model. If you need a rich control panel, built-in teams or a visual preview-environment workflow, Dokploy is a more natural fit.
CapRover: dashboard plus Docker Swarm
CapRover is worth considering when a web dashboard and Docker Swarm-oriented operation matter more than preserving Compose semantics. The official comparison gives it a UI and Swarm-oriented capabilities, but records that it lacks Compose support, built-in user permissions, built-in backups, preview deployments and teams. Those omissions should be treated as workflow differences, not as a claim that an administrator cannot assemble equivalent scripts or external services.
What the Swarm emphasis means
Swarm is an orchestration model that schedules containers across a cluster and keeps services running according to declared state. If your team already understands Swarm concepts, CapRover’s dashboard can be a comfortable way to operate that model. If your applications are supplied as Compose projects, however, the documented lack of Compose support means you should budget time to translate the stack and verify networking, secrets, storage and update behavior.

Questions to answer before choosing CapRover
- Can your persistent data strategy work with the storage layout you will use on the Swarm?
- Where will backups be created, retained and tested if built-in backups are not available?
- How will team access be controlled when built-in user permissions and teams are not listed?
- How will pull-request or branch previews be created when preview deployments are not listed?
- Will your existing Compose files need a manual conversion?
The cited comparison does not publish a CapRover memory minimum. Confirm current installation and sizing guidance for your chosen release before committing a production VPS.
Kamal: configuration-driven Docker deployments
Kamal is a different kind of Coolify alternative. Its official site describes zero-downtime deploys, rolling restarts, asset bridging, remote builds, accessory-service management and the other pieces needed to deploy and manage a web app in production with Docker. The documentation currently labels the release 2.12.0. See the official Kamal site for the current documentation.
Repository configuration instead of a dashboard
Kamal keeps deployment intent in repository configuration and executes imperative Docker commands. This suits a team that wants infrastructure changes reviewed alongside application code, repeatable command-line releases and no separate web control plane. It is not a Swarm state reconciler: the operator invokes deployments and Kamal performs the required remote actions rather than maintaining a dashboard-defined cluster state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere Kamal runs
Kamal targets any containerizable web application and can deploy to bare metal or cloud virtual machines. Its documentation names Hetzner, DigitalOcean and OVH as examples of low-cost infrastructure. The provider is only the substrate; you remain responsible for the VM’s operating system, network exposure, storage and recovery plan.
Who should choose Kamal
- Teams comfortable reviewing YAML or equivalent repository configuration and running a CLI.
- Applications that already produce reliable Docker images.
- Deployments that need rolling restarts and zero-downtime techniques without adopting Kubernetes.
- Organizations that want accessory services managed as part of the deployment configuration.
Kamal is less suitable if your primary requirement is a multi-tenant dashboard with visual permissions, one-click templates and non-developer operators.
Portainer: container management rather than a direct PaaS replacement
Portainer should be evaluated as an administration layer, not assumed to be a one-for-one Coolify replacement. Its documentation says the UI manages Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI. That breadth is useful when one operator needs visibility across different container engines or clusters.

Community and Business editions
Community Edition is free and open source. Business Edition adds features such as role-based access control and registry management and requires a license. Confirm the current edition terms in Portainer’s documentation before designing a team workflow around a particular feature.

A container-management UI can help you inspect workloads, deploy stacks and administer environments, but it does not automatically provide the same opinionated application lifecycle as a PaaS. Compare the exact features you need—preview environments, database provisioning, rollback semantics, build servers, notifications and volume backups—rather than assuming that support for several engines means support for every Coolify workflow.
Do you need Kubernetes to replace Coolify?
No. None of the main paths requires Kubernetes as a prerequisite. Dokploy’s comparison lists multi-node and multi-server support without making Kubernetes a requirement. Dokku can use its Docker scheduler, with the documented 1 GB minimum, or an optional K3s scheduler that requires 2 GB on every node. CapRover centers on Docker Swarm. Kamal deploys Docker workloads directly to bare metal or cloud VMs. Portainer can manage Kubernetes, but it also manages Docker, Swarm, Podman and Azure ACI.
Choose Kubernetes only when its operational model solves a real problem: a larger cluster, established Kubernetes expertise, specific controllers or a workload that depends on that ecosystem. Adding it solely to replace a VPS dashboard increases the number of components, upgrades and failure modes you must operate.

What a VPS may cost
An independent comparison published on 6 October 2026 and updated on 8 October 2026 estimates roughly $7–$9 per month for a 4 GB server. That is a dated, third-party estimate from Ployz’s comparison, not a universal price or a fee charged by any of these projects. Actual cost varies with region, CPU, NVMe or network storage, backups, bandwidth, IPv4 charges and provider billing terms.

Best Value
- Operating-system and platform updates, with a rollback path for failed upgrades.
- SSH-key management, least-privilege access, firewall rules and removal of unused public ports.
- Encrypted backups stored away from the VPS, retention rules and regular restore tests.
- Metrics, logs, disk-space alerts and a way to detect failed deployments or expired certificates.
- DNS and TLS renewal, domain recovery and documentation for another operator.
- An incident-response process covering compromise, data loss, provider outage and accidental deletion.

Migration checklist from Coolify
- Inventory every workload. Record image or build source, ports, environment variables, persistent volumes, databases, cron jobs, domains, certificates and external integrations. Do not migrate only the web container and discover later that uploads or scheduled work lived elsewhere.
- Classify each dependency. Separate stateless services, stateful databases, queues, object storage and one-off jobs. This determines which data needs a live migration, a dump, a volume copy or a clean rebuild.
- Choose the deployment contract. Keep Compose-oriented applications together for Dokploy, convert the process to a Git-push model for Dokku, map it to Swarm expectations for CapRover, or define repository-driven Docker releases for Kamal.
- Provision a clean VPS. Create a non-root administrative path, apply updates, configure a firewall, set time synchronization and decide where off-host backups will live before exposing the application.
- Recreate secrets and storage deliberately. Copy secrets through the new platform’s supported mechanism, create volumes with known ownership, and verify that the application can read and write them before importing production data.
- Test a staging deployment. Exercise image builds, migrations, health checks, background workers, scheduled jobs, TLS, logs and rollback. A successful container start does not prove that a stateful service is recoverable.
- Perform the cutover. Lower DNS TTL in advance, stop writes or use the application’s documented migration procedure, take a final backup, switch traffic and watch errors, latency, disk usage and background work.
- Keep the old system read-only until verification ends. Retain the original deployment and its backups for a defined period, then remove credentials and public access only after restore and rollback checks pass.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Choosing by interface alone
A dashboard can hide important differences in storage, orchestration and rollback behavior. Read the platform’s deployment model first, then reproduce one representative multi-service application before migrating everything.
Running a documented minimum as a production target
Dokku’s 1 GB and 2 GB figures are installation minimums. Builds, databases, log bursts and simultaneous deploys consume memory and disk. Monitor peak use and reserve capacity rather than treating the minimum as a recommendation.
Assuming Compose portability
A Compose file may rely on bind mounts, privileged settings, health checks, external networks or a particular storage driver. CapRover’s documented lack of Compose support makes this risk explicit; other platforms still require testing because a syntactically valid file can behave differently on another host.
Backing up only the database
Uploaded media, generated reports, encryption keys and persistent volumes can be as important as relational data. Dokploy’s listed volume backups illustrate why the backup scope should include every durable path, followed by an actual restore test.
Ignoring access and recovery during a tool change
Changing the deployment platform is also a credential migration. Rotate old tokens, verify that the new operator can reach the VPS during a provider or DNS incident, and document how to deploy or restore when the web UI is unavailable.
Bottom line
Start with Dokploy when you want the nearest Coolify-style experience on a VPS, especially if Docker Compose, previews, teams, backups and rollback are central. Pick Dokku when a Git push to a server is the feature, CapRover when Docker Swarm and a dashboard outweigh Compose fidelity, Kamal when deployments belong in repository configuration and the CLI, and Portainer when broad container administration matters more than a PaaS lifecycle. The best choice is the one whose operational model matches your team; no tool removes the need to secure, monitor, back up and recover the infrastructure underneath it.
