For most Mac users, the best controller is the one you already own and can pair in System Settings, as long as the game you want to play accepts gamepad input. If you are buying new, the choice depends on your macOS version and how much button customization you need. The 8BitDo Pro 2 is the option with the lower documented macOS requirement (macOS 13.2 or later). The 8BitDo Pro 3 offers more configurable hardware but requires macOS 26 or later. Neither manufacturer’s page establishes that every Mac game will respond to either controller, so the verification steps below matter as much as the hardware.
A controller that appears in macOS Bluetooth settings is not the same as a controller that works in every game. Pairing confirms the connection. The game decides whether it reads that connection as a gamepad.

Start with the controller you already have
Apple’s guide The Best Games for Controllers on the Mac App Store states: “Most MFi and console controllers work with Mac out of the box.” Apple’s pairing instructions cover DualShock 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge, and several Xbox controllers, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Adaptive, Elite 2, and Wireless controllers. If your controller is in that group, you do not need a third-party driver to start.
Pairing a console controller on macOS
- Open System Settings and select Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode. For a DualShock 4, hold Share + PlayStation until the rear light blinks. For a DualSense or DualSense Edge, hold Create + PlayStation until the light bar blinks. For the listed Xbox controllers, turn the controller on and press its pairing button.
- Under Devices, select the controller and connect to it.
- To remap buttons or create profiles, open System Settings and select Game Controllers. From there you can also assign actions such as screenshots and screen recording.
Pairing is the first check, not the last. Confirm the game itself supports controllers (see the verification checklist below) before you assume the setup is complete.

Third-party controllers for Mac
Two 8BitDo models have product pages that state Mac compatibility directly. The comparison below uses only the manufacturer’s figures and the Apple compatibility page. Neither independent testing nor comparative performance data is established for these models.

8BitDo Pro 2: the lower macOS requirement
The 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Gamepad lists Mac compatibility from macOS 13.2 onward, with Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity, two rear paddles, and a three-profile switch. Choose it if you are on an older supported macOS version and want paddles and on-controller profiles. Do not expect Ultimate Software configuration in Mac mode, because the product page excludes it.

8BitDo Pro 3: more configurable hardware on newer macOS
The 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad lists Apple compatibility with macOS 26 and above, with Apple Bluetooth and wired USB connectivity. Its feature list includes TMR sticks, extra bumpers, rear paddles, switchable trigger modes, and magnetic interchangeable ABXY buttons. Remapping and sensitivity adjustment run through Ultimate Software V2. The macOS 26 requirement is specific to this model. Do not assume that another 8BitDo controller with a lower requirement has the same Mac support.

Choosing between the options
- If you already own a DualSense, DualSense Edge, DualShock 4, or a listed Xbox controller, start there and skip the purchase.
- If you are on macOS 13.2 through 25 and want rear paddles and profiles without software setup, check the Pro 2 page.
- If you are on macOS 26 or later and want TMR sticks, switchable triggers, and software remapping, check the Pro 3 page, and confirm the software setup in your macOS version before relying on it.
- Verify current stock and price on the manufacturer’s page at the time of purchase. This article does not verify either.
Platform limits to know before you buy
8BitDo’s Apple compatibility guide says rumble and motion control are not supported on Apple devices “for the moment.” The same guide states that the Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller does not work through its 2.4G dongle with Apple devices. That is a separate product from the Pro 2 and Pro 3, but it shows why the connection mode matters. A controller can be compatible over Bluetooth and unsupported through a dongle.

Steam games and Steam Input
Valve’s Steam Input device list documents support for PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, Steam Controller, PlayStation 3, and DirectInput gamepads. Steam Input can translate these controllers for games that do not support them natively. But a device appearing on Valve’s list does not mean every Steam game accepts it.
Use Steam Input only when a game needs it. Check the game’s store listing for controller support, then use the in-game input settings. If the game already reads the controller correctly, adding a Steam Input layer can make button prompts or mappings harder to predict.

Verification checklist before you play
- Confirm your macOS version against the controller’s listed minimum.
- Confirm the connection mode you plan to use (Bluetooth, USB, or a dongle) is one the manufacturer or Apple lists for that controller.
- Check that the game’s listing or in-game settings indicate controller support.
- Open the game’s controller settings and confirm button glyphs match the controller you are using.
- Test rumble and motion features only after confirming they are supported on Apple devices for your model.
- If the controller shows as connected in System Settings but a game ignores it, try the game’s own controller settings, then Steam Input if the game runs through Steam.
What the available evidence does and does not show
The sources here establish manufacturer-stated macOS requirements, connection types, pairing steps, and a small number of documented limitations. They do not establish latency, durability, ergonomic comfort, independent performance rankings, or the current retail price of any controller. Universal compatibility across macOS games is also not established. Treat the controller choice as a compatibility decision, and let your specific games decide the rest.
