The best container depends on how many tomatoes you need to ripen: use a plain paper bag for a few, or a shallow cardboard box lined with absorbent paper for a larger harvest. A paper-lined counter works for a very small batch. No special ripening gadget is necessary. Choose mature, firm fruit; keep it out of direct sun; and check it every few days.
Choose a container that fits the harvest
Containers help keep tomatoes organized, limit bruising and make it easier to spot spoilage. They do not control ripening on their own: fruit maturity, temperature, humidity and regular inspection matter more.

| Setup | Best for | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Plain paper bag | A few tomatoes; optionally, a quicker ripening pace | Place tomatoes inside and check frequently. The enclosure can retain ethylene released by the fruit; a specialty bag is not required. |
| Shallow cardboard box or other wide, flat container | A larger harvest | Line the bottom with newspaper or other absorbent paper. Spread tomatoes apart where practical and limit layers to reduce bruising and make inspection easier. A clean, reused box is sufficient. |
| Paper-lined counter or table | A very small batch | Set tomatoes on absorbent paper with space between them, away from direct sunlight, and watch them closely. |
| Individual paper wrapping or newspaper between fruit | Slower storage or extra separation | Iowa State and Nebraska Extension describe wrapping tomatoes in newspaper; Cornell describes placing newspaper between fruit as a less labor-intensive alternative. These are different methods, not a single universal rule. |
These options are described by Colorado State University Extension, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension. Select by batch size, separation, absorbency, airflow and how easily you can inspect the fruit—not by brand claims.

Start with tomatoes that can finish ripening
Pick mature-green tomatoes: full-sized, firm and free of defects. Immature green fruit is more likely to spoil and may not develop good flavor. Remove damaged or decaying tomatoes before arranging the rest in the container.

Set the location for the pace you want
Tomatoes do not need direct sunlight to ripen indoors. Keep them out of direct sun; warmth, rather than light, supports ripening. A warmer indoor location generally moves the process along faster, while a cooler place slows it.
Temperature guidance differs by method and goal, so use the cited ranges as specific extension recommendations rather than one exact ideal for every home:

- Colorado State University Extension: its guidance gives a 55–70°F range. At the warmer end—around 65–70°F—tomatoes may ripen in about two weeks; near 55°F, the process may take about a month. It warns that ripening below 50°F can result in bland fruit. The publication date is not stated in the cited result.
- Iowa State University Extension and Outreach: for its newspaper-wrapping method, it recommends a cool, dark location at 60–65°F. Its FAQ was updated August 2, 2024.
- University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension: it describes indoor storage at 55–60°F. The publication date is not stated in the cited result.
Indoor-ripened tomatoes can help salvage mature fruit, but do not expect them to taste just like vine-ripened tomatoes. Colorado State notes that flavor will not fully develop as it would on the vine, and Iowa State says indoor-ripened fruit may be less flavorful.

Leave space around tomatoes where possible, use an absorbent liner and check the fruit every few days. Remove any tomato that becomes soft or starts to decay so it does not compromise the rest. A crowded container makes bruising and missed spoilage more likely.

Humidity is a balance: too much can encourage mold or rot, while very dry conditions can cause shriveling. A covered box may suit some conditions, while a drier, more ventilated arrangement may suit others. No container precisely controls humidity, so inspect the fruit and adjust the cover or arrangement if the tomatoes show signs of excess moisture or drying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use ethylene only if you want to change the timing
Ripening tomatoes naturally release ethylene. To encourage green tomatoes to ripen faster, enclose them with a ripe tomato, apple or banana, especially in a paper bag. This is optional; tomatoes ripen without added fruit. To slow the rest of a batch, separate ripe or coloring tomatoes from green ones.
