There is no universal best controller preset for competitive play. Start with the game’s defaults, identify whether the game or controller already applies a response curve or deadzone, then change one setting at a time and test in that game. Use the lowest deadzone that avoids unwanted stick movement, and save separate profiles for different games.
Start with a baseline, not a copied preset
Before changing anything, note the game’s look sensitivity, aim-response curve and deadzone. Then check the controller profile for its own curve and deadzone settings. Because the game and controller can each affect input, changing both at once makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped.

- Record the current settings. Save or photograph the in-game aim/look sensitivity, curve and deadzone, plus the controller profile.
- Choose one problem to address. For example, identify whether your aim tends to overshoot, stop short, or move when you are not touching the stick.
- Change one variable. Test the change in the game, then keep it only if control feels more consistent.
- Keep a baseline profile. That gives you a quick way to undo a change that does not help.
Choose a right-stick curve for the aim problem
DualSense Edge: understand the curve labels
The Edge offers six stick sensitivity curves. Sony describes Default as proportional to stick movement; Quick as increasing registered input as the stick tilts; Precise as registering minimum input for more controlled movement; Steady as limiting response at larger tilt; Dynamic as limiting response near the endpoints while accelerating in the middle; and Digital as reaching near-maximum input from a slight tilt. These descriptions explain how the curves respond, not which one will produce better aim for every player or game. See Sony’s DualSense Edge settings guide for PC.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

For a game-specific example, Bungie’s 2026 Marathon recommendations suggest Precise on the right stick and Quick on the left. That is guidance for Marathon, not a general competitive preset.

Xbox Elite Series 2: tune the curve to your tendency
In the Xbox Accessories app, treat a curve change as an experiment rather than a preset to copy. Xbox’s 2019 launch advice asks, “Do you overshoot or stop short when aiming?” and uses Instant as an example for faster movement. Those are dated examples, not universal recommendations; preserve a baseline profile and test any change in your game. See Xbox’s Elite Series 2 launch advice and the Elite Series 2 feature page.
Set deadzone for stable input
A deadzone is the amount of stick movement that can occur before the game or controller registers input. Lowering it can make small movements register sooner, but too little can cause unwanted movement when the stick is untouched. Reduce the deadzone gradually until unwanted movement appears, then raise it slightly. No single percentage is established as best for all controllers, games or sticks.

- Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
- Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
If your Elite Series 2 responds inconsistently, Xbox announced thumbstick and trigger calibration features in November 2024. Xbox cautions that calibration may not resolve drift caused by normal wear. Calibration is not a substitute for diagnosing a worn or damaged stick. See the November 2024 Xbox update.

A shorter trigger stop reduces how far you must pull the trigger, which may suit games where a quick firing input matters. But trigger travel and game behavior are not interchangeable: a game that relies on gradual pressure may be harder to control with a shortened pull.

DualSense Edge
The Edge lets you configure trigger input ranges and choose long, medium or short physical stops. Sony says trigger effects do not work when the physical stops are set to medium or short. Decide whether the shorter travel is worth losing those effects for the profile you use. Bungie’s Marathon guidance, for example, discusses a medium or short R2 stop and an L2 range of 0–70 for that game’s ADS behavior; do not assume those settings transfer to another title. See Sony’s Edge settings guide and Bungie’s Marathon recommendations.
Xbox Elite Series 2
The Elite Series 2 has physical hair-trigger locks and trigger mapping options in the Accessories app. Xbox’s 2019 advice gives a trigger deadzone of 1–2 as an example for certain competitive shooters, while noting that games requiring gradual trigger pressure may work better with default settings. Treat that figure as Xbox’s dated example, not a general setting to apply to every game. See Xbox’s launch advice.
Remap rear buttons only when they fit your play
Both controllers let you assign actions to rear inputs: the Edge has remappable rear buttons, while the Elite Series 2 has four paddles. A useful assignment is one that lets you perform an action without moving a thumb off a stick, but the best mapping depends on the game’s controls and what feels comfortable. Set up the mapping in a profile and practise with it before relying on it in competitive play. See the DualSense Edge product page and the Elite Series 2 feature page.

Save profiles by game or playstyle
A curve, deadzone or trigger setup that works in one title may not suit another. Save a separate profile when a game or playstyle calls for a meaningful change rather than continually altering one shared setup.
