The best compact travel camera depends on what you need it to photograph: choose the Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 (called TZ99 in some markets) for the broadest zoom reach, the Sony RX100 VII for a one-inch-type sensor and built-in viewfinder in a pocketable zoom, or the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III for a brighter standard zoom—if its current price and availability make sense. There is no one-size-fits-all winner: decide first whether distant subjects, low-light scenes, or video matter most.
Best compact travel cameras at a glance
| Camera | Best suited to | Lens and sensor | Viewfinder and screen | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99 | Travelers who want one small camera for wide views and distant subjects | 30x optical zoom, 24–702mm-equivalent; 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch sensor; f/3.3–6.4 lens, according to TechRadar | Tilting touchscreen; no viewfinder, according to TechRadar | Very broad reach comes with a small sensor and less favorable low-light performance |
| Sony RX100 VII | Travelers who want a compact zoom, one-inch-type sensor and built-in EVF | 24–200mm-equivalent zoom and one-inch-type sensor, as described in current guide coverage | Built-in electronic viewfinder, noted in compact-camera comparisons | Less zoom reach than the Panasonic; current street price and stock are not established here |
| Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III | Travelers who prefer a bright standard zoom and tilting monitor, including for video | 4.2x optical zoom, 24–100mm-equivalent; 20.1MP one-inch stacked CMOS; f/1.8–2.8, per Canon U.S. specifications | 3-inch tilt-type monitor, per Canon U.S. specifications | Limited reach compared with a travel zoom, and availability at a reasonable price can be difficult |

Which compact camera fits your trip?
Choose the Panasonic ZS99 / TZ99 for maximum zoom range
The ZS99, known as the TZ99 in some markets, covers a 24–702mm-equivalent range with 30x optical zoom. TechRadar identifies it as a 2025 model and lists 4K video at 30fps, USB-C charging and a tilting touchscreen. That broad focal range is useful when a trip may include both landscapes and subjects you cannot approach, such as wildlife or distant architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe compromise is the 1/2.3-inch sensor and f/3.3–6.4 lens. TechRadar notes that image quality is the trade-off for the wide zoom range; this is not the strongest fit for dim interiors or evening scenes. It also has no viewfinder, which can make composing in bright sunlight less convenient. Check whether your local listing uses ZS99 or TZ99 before searching for stock.

Choose the Sony RX100 VII for a viewfinder and shorter, versatile zoom
The RX100 VII pairs a one-inch-type sensor with a 24–200mm-equivalent zoom, according to current compact-camera guide coverage. A built-in electronic viewfinder is another advantage when you prefer composing at eye level or working in bright conditions. Sony’s product page provides the manufacturer’s specifications, including 4K recording.
Its zoom stops at 200mm equivalent, so it does not reach as far as the Panasonic. The reviewed sources do not establish a current street price or stock position, so compare local listings before treating it as a practical option.

Choose the Canon G7 X Mark III for a bright standard zoom—if the price is right
Canon’s U.S. specifications list a 20.1-megapixel one-inch stacked CMOS sensor, a 4.2x optical zoom covering 24–100mm equivalent, optical image stabilization, and a 3-inch tilt-type monitor. Its maximum aperture is f/1.8 at the wide end and f/2.8 at telephoto. This shorter, brighter zoom can make more sense than a superzoom if you mostly photograph people, food, or everyday scenes and also want a compact video-capable camera.

It cannot cover distant subjects like the ZS99/TZ99. Price and availability are especially important: RTINGS’ September 29, 2026 update moved the Canon from its mid-range pick to an alternative because it had become difficult to find at reasonable prices. TechRadar likewise cautions that popularity has affected its value. Treat it as a conditional choice, not an automatic bargain.

How to choose a compact travel camera
Start with the subjects you expect to photograph
- Distant subjects: Favor a longer zoom, such as the Panasonic’s 24–702mm-equivalent range.
- People, food and indoor scenes: A shorter zoom with a brighter maximum aperture, such as the Canon’s f/1.8–2.8 lens, may be more useful than extra reach.
- Mixed everyday travel: Compare how much zoom you will actually use with whether a viewfinder, sensor size or brighter lens matters more.
Compare sensor size and lens brightness together
A larger sensor can help, but it does not by itself guarantee better photos. The lens’s maximum aperture, focal length and the light available also affect what a camera can capture. For instance, the Panasonic’s small sensor and broad zoom make it a different compromise from the one-inch-type Sony, while the Canon pairs a one-inch sensor with a bright but shorter zoom. Choose for the situations you expect rather than treating one specification as a verdict.
Check the viewfinder and screen design
If you often shoot under strong sun, a viewfinder can be useful. The Sony has a built-in EVF, while the Panasonic has no viewfinder. Canon’s listed 3-inch tilt-type monitor and the Panasonic’s tilting touchscreen provide screen flexibility, but the designs are not interchangeable; check whether the screen movement suits how you frame and record.
Rank #4
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
Match video features to your actual use
The Panasonic’s listed video specification is 4K at 30fps, and Sony’s manufacturer page confirms 4K recording. The supplied specifications for the Canon emphasize its hybrid stills-and-video role. If stabilized video, audio connections or creator-focused controls are essential, confirm those exact capabilities in the manufacturer’s specifications for the regional model before buying. A video-first compact and a long-zoom travel camera solve different problems.

Prices, availability and product names are market-dependent and can change. The Canon’s availability concern was reported by RTINGS in its September 29, 2026 update; it is not a guarantee that every market has the same stock situation. The Panasonic is sold as ZS99 in North America and TZ99 in other markets, according to TechRadar. Check your local retailer and the manufacturer’s regional page rather than relying on an old listing or a different country’s price.
