The best Commander cards from The Hobbit set depend on the deck you want to build: Thranduil leads an Elf graveyard toolbox, Thorin powers up Dwarves with Treasures, Smaug the Impenetrable turns noncombat damage into mana, Beorn rewards a board of Bears, and The Great Goblin links counters and creature deaths to damage and card access. These are distinct build-arounds, not a universal power ranking.
What counts as a “best” card for Commander?
Commander value depends on color identity, mana cost, support requirements, and how well a card fits the rest of your deck. A commander’s popularity is a useful clue that players are interested in its game plan; it is not evidence that it wins more games or that the card is an automatic inclusion in another deck.

A TCG Spikes ranking published August 25, 2026, ordered new eligible The Hobbit legends using a saved EDHREC deck-adoption snapshot. It reported 6,062 decks for Thranduil, 4,340 for Thorin, 4,248 for Smaug the Impenetrable, 3,721 for Beorn, and 3,719 for The Great Goblin. These are dated, third-party adoption counts, not official Wizards statistics or win-rate results. See the ranking and its snapshot context.
The five cards below make the strongest starting shortlist from that snapshot. Each is most compelling as the center of a deck built to support its abilities; popularity alone does not establish how useful it is in the 99 of an unrelated deck.

Five leading Hobbit commanders
Thranduil, the Elvenking: an Elf graveyard toolbox
Thranduil can use activated abilities of Elf cards in your graveyard. When another legendary Elf enters under your control, Thranduil’s trigger draws two cards, then discards one. That combination supports a deck that fills its graveyard with useful Elf abilities while playing enough legendary Elves to keep the card-selection engine active.
- What it provides: access to graveyard-based activated abilities and repeatable card selection.
- What it asks for: a supply of Elf cards with worthwhile activated abilities, plus legendary Elves to trigger the draw-and-discard effect.
- What can disrupt it: graveyard exile removes the borrowed abilities. Thranduil does not waive their activation costs or restrictions, so the deck still needs to meet each ability’s requirements.
The adoption snapshot reported 6,062 decks for Thranduil, the highest count among the five cards in this shortlist. That signals interest in the build-around, not a measured advantage in play.
Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk: Dwarves, Treasures, and combat power
Thorin creates a Treasure whenever Thorin or another Dwarf enters under your control. Other Dwarves get +1/+0 for each artifact token you control. Dwarf tokens can therefore add bodies, create more Treasures, and increase the power of the rest of your Dwarf board.

- What it asks for: Dwarves entering the battlefield and enough artifact tokens to make the power boost matter.
- The trade-off: spending Treasures for mana reduces the power bonus. The boost adds no toughness and does not apply to Thorin, so a wide board remains vulnerable to sweepers.

Smaug the Impenetrable: turn self-inflicted damage into Treasure
Smaug the Impenetrable is reported as a seven-mana commander with flying, indestructible, and haste. Whenever noncombat damage is dealt to Smaug, you create that many Treasures. The plan is to pair the dragon with effects that can deal damage to your own commander, converting that damage into a burst of mana.
- What it provides: Treasure generation from noncombat damage, with a flying, hasty threat as the engine’s centerpiece.
- What it asks for: ramp to reach the reported seven-mana starting cost, and damage sources that can target Smaug.
- What can disrupt it: indestructible does not prevent exile, bounce, sacrifice, or toughness reduction. Damage prevention also prevents the damage event needed for the Treasure trigger.
The snapshot reported 4,248 decks for this Smaug. Treat that figure as a dated measure of deck adoption, not evidence of a win-rate advantage.

Beorn the Fierce: Bear-wide combat and card draw
Beorn gives other Bears +2/+2. At the beginning of combat on your turn, Beorn puts a trample counter on a creature and makes that creature a Bear. If you control three or more Bears then, you draw two cards. Turning a creature into a Bear can help reach the threshold, but the draw still depends on having three Bears when the trigger resolves.

- What it provides: a substantial boost for other Bears, trample access, and card draw when the board meets the threshold.
- What it asks for: a Bear-focused creature base or other ways to maintain at least three Bears through the combat trigger.
- What to watch: the card draw is conditional on the board state; losing Bears can prevent the payoff.

The Great Goblin: counters, damage, and temporary card access
The Great Goblin’s reported abilities connect two events: putting one or more counters on a Goblin, Orc, or Army deals 2 damage to a target opponent, while another such creature dying exiles the top card of your library for you to play through the end of your next turn.

- What it provides: targeted damage from counter placement and temporary access to cards after qualifying creatures die.
- What it asks for: a supply of Goblins, Orcs, or Army creatures, plus ways to place counters and to make those creatures’ deaths useful.
- What to watch: placing several counters at once does not mean several damage triggers, according to the ranking’s rules explanation. The damage trigger targets one opponent, and the exiled card’s play window expires at the end of your next turn.
The August 25, 2026 snapshot reported 3,719 decks for The Great Goblin. As with the other counts, that is adoption data rather than a result-based power measure.
Other commanders from the set to consider
The same dated ranking also highlighted several other new commanders. Their engines point toward different deck-building choices, so consider them when their setup fits your collection and preferred play style:
- Smaug the Magnificent: a Treasure-hoard attack payoff.
- Gandalf, Party Guest: a legendary-Wizard plan with a window for casting a spell for free.
- Bard, King of Dale: token and card-draw effects with replacement-effect considerations.
- Smaug, Wicked Worm: card draw funded by Treasures.
- Radagast of Rhosgobel: discounted flash creatures.
These are additional possibilities rather than interchangeable alternatives. The cited ranking describes their broad engines; evaluate a specific list against the card text and the rest of your deck before choosing one.

Color identity and mana value are not established in the cited ranking information, so this comparison does not assign either from inference. Check the individual card record before building; those details determine which cards you can include and how much ramp the deck needs.
Set legality and mechanics
Wizards identifies the main set as HOB and its Eternal-legal component as HOC. Its release notes say HOB cards are permitted in Commander and new HOC cards are permitted in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage. Previously printed HOC cards are legal in any format where a card with the same name is permitted. Check the current Commander banned list and format rules before using a card, since legality can change. Wizards’ release notes explain the set and its rules.
Storied rewards a lasting threshold
Wizards describes Storied as granting the enduring story designation for the rest of the game once you control three or more permanents that are legendary, Sagas, and/or artifacts. The designation remains even if you later lose those permanents. That makes the threshold a one-time milestone, not a condition you must maintain.

The set also returns Adventure cards. Wizards says their structure and operation have not changed, so they follow the established Adventure rules rather than a new set-specific procedure. Consult the official release notes for details and card-specific rulings.
Buying cards: packs are random, singles are specific
A Play Booster contains HOB cards, but opening one does not guarantee any named commander in this article. If you want to build around a particular legend, buying that card as a single is more direct than relying on randomized packs. Wizards’ product information lists Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, Gift Bundles, Draft Night, and Scene Boxes; availability and retailer prices vary. Wizards’ 2026 listed MSRPs were $6.99 for a Play Booster, $37.99 for a Collector Booster, $69.99 for a Bundle, $89.99 for a Gift Bundle, $119.99 for Draft Night, and $41.99 for a Scene Box. These are historical official list prices, not current retailer prices or estimates of secondary-market value. Wizards also said approximately 500 Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent headliner cards were printed; that treatment appears only in Collector Boosters and is mechanically identical to other treatments of the card. It is a collector treatment, not a reason to expect a particular card from a pack.
