For a standard SDR video loop, use Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit SDR. Keep the source’s intended color grade, and make sure the encoder’s color signaling matches the video. Don’t switch ordinary SDR footage to HDR to make it look more vivid. Use HDR settings only when the loop is genuinely HDR and the source, encoder, and YouTube stream setup all support it.
Recommended color settings for a 4K60 loop
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit output. These are the appropriate starting settings for a typical SDR recording, whether it contains a static scene, music visualizer, or other looped footage.

- Color space: Rec. 709.
- Bit depth: 8-bit SDR.
- Color interpretation: Match the encoder’s primaries, matrix, and transfer characteristics to the source. Don’t force a different color space as a visual enhancement.
There is no universal saturation or contrast adjustment that improves every loop. Preserve the grade the video was made with, then check the encoded stream for unexpected shifts, banding, crushed shadows, or clipped highlights.

4K60 encoder settings that affect the stream
YouTube’s current English live encoder settings page lists the following general requirements and recommendations for live encoding. Its bitrate table can vary across localized results, so confirm the current YouTube Help table and the ingest bitrate shown in Live Control Room before choosing a value.

| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at up to 60 fps. |
| Codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed for live encoding. HDR has additional codec requirements; see below. |
| Bitrate at 4K/2160p60 | H.264: 35 Mbps recommended. AV1/HEVC: 10–40 Mbps displayed range. These are YouTube’s values on the English settings page accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that one bitrate is optimal for every encoder, source, or connection. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Pixel aspect ratio and scan | Square pixels and progressive scan. |
| SDR color and bit depth | Rec. 709 and 8-bit. |
| Latency | Low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; YouTube uses normal latency. |
These are platform-level settings, not a claim that every encoder labels its controls identically. For a loop, inspect representative moments from across the recording rather than judging only its opening frame. Dark gradients, bright highlights, and saturated colors can reveal problems that a still or low-detail scene will not.
When to use HDR instead
Choose HDR only when the source is an actual HDR master compatible with PQ or HLG. An SDR file does not become genuine HDR by selecting an HDR transfer function in the encoder; incorrect signaling can make the stream look washed out, overly dark, or otherwise unlike the source.

| Color signaling | Rec. 709. | BT.2020 primaries and matrix, with PQ or HLG transfer matching the source. |
| Bit depth | 8-bit. | 10-bit. |
| Codec guidance | YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding. | YouTube’s HDR guidance requires HEVC/H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
YouTube’s HDR setup documentation describes RTMP(S) and HLS workflows. For its HDR stream keys, it says to leave “Turn on manual settings” unchecked. Its OBS walkthrough specifies a compatible HEVC hardware encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, with HLG recommended in that workflow. Choose PQ or HLG according to the source; the encoder’s metadata must describe the content actually being sent.

- Confirm the source: establish whether the recording is SDR or genuine HDR. Don’t infer HDR from vivid-looking colors.
- Match the encoder: use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for ordinary SDR. For genuine HDR, configure the appropriate HDR-capable encoder and matching signaling.
- Check ingest settings: select the codec and bitrate for the encoder and connection, using YouTube’s current 4K60 guidance as a reference rather than treating one value as universal.
- Test before the live broadcast: YouTube recommends testing, including audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Review scenes across the loop and watch stream health in Live Control Room.
- Verify playback: inspect the stream on a display that supports the intended format. A color setting that looks correct in the encoder preview may not be interpreted the same way on every playback device.
Checking dark gradients, bright highlights, and saturated scenes is a practical review approach, not a YouTube-mandated test protocol. No single display or preview can establish how every viewer’s screen will render the stream.

Common color and stream problems
- SDR looks washed out or too dark: check that the source and encoder agree on SDR Rec. 709 signaling. Remove accidental HDR or transfer-function settings.
- Colors look excessively intense: check for an unintended HDR conversion or saturation adjustment. Return to the source’s intended grade rather than applying a universal boost.
- Gradients show bands: inspect the source and encoded output in the affected dark or smooth areas. Confirm that the chosen output bit depth and color path are appropriate; 10-bit HDR settings are not a fix for an SDR source.
- Highlights clip or shadows disappear: compare the encoder output with the source and verify that color signaling and levels are not being misinterpreted.
- HDR playback does not look like the master: verify that the source is genuine HDR, the encoder supports the configured 10-bit HEVC path, and primaries, matrix, and PQ/HLG transfer match the source.
- Live stream health is poor: use YouTube’s stream-health feedback and recheck the chosen ingest bitrate and encoder configuration. The recommended figures are not a substitute for a connection test.
Keep a YouTube loop running without a home computer
Color configuration determines how the video is signaled; it does not keep a broadcast online by itself. YouTube Help also names Gyre as an option for continuous broadcasts in 4K at 30/60 fps, but that does not establish its color controls or fit for every loop. For a cloud-based way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a distinct option: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload the recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
