Best Cloud Storage With Sync in 2026: Sync Folders, Virtual Drives & More

Cloud sync can keep a full local copy or show cloud files without storing the whole library. Learn how to choose between mirrored folders, streaming, and virtual drives.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best cloud storage sync setup depends first on whether you want files stored on your computer. A mirrored sync folder keeps a local copy and uses disk space; a streaming or virtual-drive setup exposes cloud files without downloading the full library by default. Choose mirroring when offline access and a local copy matter most. Choose streaming or online-only files when conserving computer storage matters more.

How cloud storage sync affects your computer’s storage

Cloud sync can mean different things. With a mirrored folder, files exist both in the cloud and in a local folder, so changes can sync between the two. With streaming or virtual-drive access, files are shown on your computer but the full library is not stored locally by default. That distinction answers the key question: are your files on the computer, or only in the cloud?

Mirrored folders

A mirrored folder keeps a local copy, which takes up disk space but can make selected files available without an internet connection. pCloud describes its Sync feature as linking a local folder with a location in pCloud and reflecting changes both ways; it also says Sync creates a local copy for offline use. pCloud Help Center explains the difference between pCloud Drive and Sync.

Streaming and virtual drives

A virtual drive presents cloud files through your computer’s file system without downloading the whole library by default. Google says, “When streaming, files are located on a virtual Drive on your computer.” Streaming may still use local cache or files you specifically make available offline, so it should not be read as a promise that the app never uses disk space. Google Drive Help describes streaming and mirroring.

Which sync model should you choose?

Need Better fit Trade-off
Work on files without an internet connection Mirrored folders or files explicitly marked for offline access Local copies use computer storage; confirm how your provider handles offline changes and resynchronization.
Keep a large library accessible without storing it all locally Streaming, virtual-drive access, or online-only files Opening cloud-only files requires connectivity unless you designate them for offline use; local cache may still be used.
Keep only selected folders on a space-limited computer Selective sync or online-only files, if supported on your system and plan Availability and controls vary by provider, operating system, and plan.
Have a local copy while keeping cloud synchronization A mirrored sync folder The local copy consumes space, and synchronized deletions or unwanted edits can propagate.

How the approaches work in common services

pCloud: virtual drive plus separate folder sync

pCloud separates its virtual drive from its local Sync feature. The company summarizes the virtual-drive behavior as: “pCloud Drive: Works as a virtual drive and does not use local storage by default”. In contrast, Sync connects a local folder with a cloud location and keeps changes aligned in both directions. pCloud’s desktop offline-access instructions use Sync to create a synchronized local copy of selected cloud folders. See pCloud’s Drive-versus-Sync explanation and its offline access help page.

Google Drive for desktop: streaming or mirroring

Google documents two modes: streaming, where files appear on a virtual Drive, and mirroring, where files are stored both in the cloud and on the local hard drive. The modes differ in local-storage use, and streaming can still involve cached or deliberately offline files. Google’s Drive for desktop help page describes the distinction.

Dropbox: online-only files and selective sync

Dropbox describes online-only files as a way to free hard-drive space and says selective sync can be configured in its Windows or Mac desktop app. Its product documentation also says files saved to the Dropbox folder synchronize automatically to mobile devices. These are vendor-described features, not independent findings about speed or reliability. See Dropbox’s online-only files guidance.

Sync.com: folder limit and ways to manage local space

Sync.com documents a hard limit of 50,000 files per folder; its help article’s publication date is not stated. For a computer short on space, Sync.com suggests selective sync, Vault, or moving the Sync folder to a larger external USB hard drive. Its article also describes a mobile “sync offline” option for selected files. See Sync.com’s folder-limit and storage guidance.

What to check before choosing a sync service

  • Local storage behavior: Check whether the service mirrors everything, lets you choose local folders, offers online-only files, or uses a virtual drive.
  • Offline access: Confirm how to make files available offline on your device and what happens to edits when the connection returns.
  • Folder scale: Look for documented per-folder file limits, the location of the sync root, and guidance for large libraries.
  • Operating-system support: Verify current desktop-client availability and whether the features you need work on your operating system.
  • Recovery: Check version history, deleted-file recovery, and retention periods. A sync folder is not automatically a separate backup: a deletion or unwanted change can synchronize too.
  • Price and privacy: Compare current regional plans, encryption details, sharing features, and service terms using each provider’s current official information.

Sync is useful, but it is not the same as backup

Synchronization keeps files aligned across locations; that can also carry an accidental deletion or unwanted change to the cloud or other connected devices. Before relying on a sync service to protect important files, check its version history and deleted-file recovery rules, including how long those options remain available. For a separate safety net, keep an independent backup rather than assuming the synchronized copy alone can restore every lost or changed file.

When an external drive helps

If you choose mirrored folders and your computer lacks enough space, a larger external USB drive can provide room for the local sync folder; Sync.com lists moving its folder to such a drive as one option. This is not necessary just to use a virtual-drive workflow, and a connected drive is still a local copy rather than an independent cloud backup.
