You can play Monsters & Memories now: its Early Access began October 1, 2026. But the game is still incomplete and under active development, so players looking for a different classic-era ruleset—or a more established alternative—have several options. For early EverQuest progression, consider Project 1999; for classic Norrath with more solo and small-group flexibility, consider EverQuest Legends; and for skill-build experimentation, look at Project Gorgon.
How the options differ
“Classic-style” can mean different things: recreating an older game’s progression, borrowing its look and setting, or emphasizing slower, more flexible character development. These games also differ in how much they accommodate solo play and whether they are legacy servers, publisher-backed adaptations, or newer games with old-school design.

| Game | Classic-style appeal | Solo and group play | Current state and payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project 1999 | Recreates early EverQuest’s classic-era feel and progression; its stated timeline ends at Velious. | Classic server structure; solo flexibility is not established by the cited project material. | Community project, not affiliated with Daybreak. Current access requirements and payment details are not stated in the reviewed About page. |
| EverQuest Legends | Classic EverQuest graphics, zones, effects, loot, and music, paired with modern systems. | Designed for solo play, groups of four, and raids of up to eight; characters can select up to three active classes. | Daybreak Games announced a PC launch on July 28, 2026. The publisher describes a monthly subscription. |
| Project Gorgon | Skill-based progression lets players combine skills rather than rely only on predetermined classes. | Build experimentation is established; specific solo and group expectations are not stated in the available official-site listing. | Current access, price, content state, and server status are not established here. |
| Monsters & Memories | A new MMORPG built around classic-style design rather than a legacy version of an older game. | Its Early Access FAQ lists all classes; the supplied details do not establish solo or group requirements. | Early Access began October 1, 2026. The FAQ lists a $15 USD monthly fee before applicable taxes. |
There are no comparable, current population figures for these games here. In particular, the Monsters & Memories developer’s reported 8–12,000 monthly unique players refers to Closed Alpha and Beta servers for most of 2026, not concurrent users or the current Early Access population.
Choose Project 1999 for early EverQuest progression
Project 1999 is the clearest fit if your priority is a recreation of early EverQuest rather than a new game inspired by it. Its About page describes a mission to restore the classic feeling, start with Classic content, and follow a similar release timeline that stops at Velious. Its Red server uses the same framework with modifications for classic PvP.

- Ditch the TV, and re-ignite family night with the get-together amusement of a Hasbro game
- Party it up, and surprise guests at your next event with laugh-out-loud game from Hasbro Gaming
- Nostalgic tabletop gameplay meets interactive digital content for an immersive gaming experience
- Hasbro Gaming imagines and produces games that are perfect for every age, taste, and event
That focus makes it the strongest match for players who want a defined classic-era progression arc and server structure. It is a separate project, not an official Daybreak product; its site says it is not affiliated with Daybreak. The reviewed About page does not establish current access requirements, server population, or installation steps, so check the project’s current information before committing.
Choose EverQuest Legends for classic Norrath with smaller groups
EverQuest Legends keeps the original game’s visual identity and familiar places, but it is an adaptation rather than a strict recreation of the original ruleset. Daybreak describes classic graphics, zones, effects, loot, and music alongside modern systems. The publisher’s announced PC launch date was July 28, 2026.

- FLEX WEALTH WITH HOUSES AND HOTELS: Increase assets as a filthy rich landlord, and buy houses and hotels to collect more rent
Its clearest distinction is group scale: Daybreak says players can go solo, play in groups of four, or raid with up to eight players. Characters can select up to three active classes. If you want the feel of classic Norrath without making every activity depend on a large group, that design is worth considering. The publisher describes the game as subscription-based, with a monthly fee.
Consider Project Gorgon for skill combinations
Project Gorgon offers a different kind of old-school appeal. Its official-site search listing describes a skill-based leveling system in which players combine skills instead of relying only on predetermined classes. That makes it a candidate if experimentation and character-build freedom matter more to you than reproducing a specific EverQuest era.

It lists a level 1–60 path, 28 zones, all classes, and nine playable races.

The listed price is $15 USD per month, plus applicable taxes, without region-adjusted pricing. The FAQ gives recommended PC guidance of Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, 16 GB of RAM, a relatively modern CPU, and a GTX 1060 with 6 GB of VRAM or equivalent. These are current recommendations, not final minimum requirements: the developer says requirements remain limited while optimization is ongoing.
In a September 15, 2026 update, author Shawn Lord said, “The game is not complete and development will continue as it has been – though, likely a bit faster.” That makes the trade-off explicit: Early Access offers a way to play now, but the game remains under development.
