The right pick depends on your platform, too: several originals have limited or unclear current availability, so check the exact edition and regional store before you commit.
Pick by the kind of horror you want
| What you liked | Start with | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Scarce resources, exploration and survival-horror roots | Alone in the Dark Anthology or a classic Resident Evil | Older entries and mechanics; distinguish original releases from remasters and remakes. |
| Ghosts and a distinctive way to fight them | Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse | Photographing ghosts with the Camera Obscura, alongside puzzles and survival elements. |
| Psychological unease and a mysterious town | Original Silent Hill, if you can access it; otherwise consider Silent Hill 2 (2024) as a modern remake, not an original classic. | The original is a 1999 PlayStation-era game; access on current hardware is not established by Konami’s listing. |
These are preference-based routes, not a critic ranking. Official listings establish each game’s identity and editions, but do not provide a like-for-like quality comparison.

If you want foundational survival horror
Alone in the Dark Anthology: the older PC route
Steam’s Alone in the Dark Anthology includes Alone in the Dark 1, 2 and 3. The listing presents the collection as 1990s survival-horror games for PC, with Infogrames as developer and THQ Nordic as publisher. It is a straightforward way to explore earlier entries, but the listing does not establish how well the old games’ controls or compatibility hold up on every current PC. Check the current system requirements and support details before buying.
Resident Evil: choose an entry by what you want to play
Capcom Town’s survival-horror collection lists a range of relevant games, including the original Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999), Resident Evil HD REMASTER and Resident Evil 0. It also includes the adjacent survival-horror series Dino Crisis. Listings include storefronts such as GOG and Steam, but editions and availability can change; check each title’s exact listing and platform. An original release, a remaster and a remake are different versions, not interchangeable labels.

You do not have to follow a strict series order to begin: PlayStation’s Resident Evil introduction notes that entries tell complete stories in isolation while still connecting to a broader narrative. If you finished a Resident Evil remaster, choose an older entry for a change in feel, or another version only if you specifically want its updated presentation.
If you want supernatural, ghost-focused horror
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is the most direct match if the camera-based premise appeals to you. In the game, girls return to Rogetsu Isle as teenagers and use the Camera Obscura to photograph and seal away ghosts; puzzle-solving and survival elements are also part of the experience. Nintendo’s official US Switch listing describes it as the upgraded-graphics return of a game first released in Japan in 2008, the fourth entry in the series. The Switch release date listed is March 9, 2023. The Nintendo listing is for Switch; verify regional availability and your platform before choosing it.

The publisher-provided description on Nintendo’s page says, “A group of children mysteriously disappeared during a festival on Rogetsu Isle.” That disappearance sets up the game’s return-to-the-island mystery.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake
KOEI TECMO America’s January 27, 2026 announcement describes FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE as a complete remake of the series’ second game. Twin sisters explore an abandoned village and use the Camera Obscura. The announcement said a demo would arrive on March 5, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam. That announced demo date has passed; confirm the game’s current release status and availability on your platform before treating it as a play-next option.

If you want psychological horror
Original Silent Hill: the historical classic, with an access caveat
Konami’s European page gives the original SILENT HILL a release date of August 1, 1999 and lists PlayStation, PS Vita and PSP. Its premise follows Harry Mason searching for his missing daughter after a crash near the town. Those details establish the game’s identity, not present-day store access: the page does not confirm current regional availability or that the original can be played on current consoles. Check your region’s official store or hardware options before planning around it.
Silent Hill 2 (2024): a remake, not the original
If you want a more recent psychological-horror presentation, Konami describes SILENT HILL 2 (2024) as a full remake of the PlayStation 2 original, first released in 2001. Konami’s European product page lists PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam and gives the remake’s release date as October 8, 2024. It is a modern remake to consider alongside classic horror, not an older original game.

Check access before you choose
The platform named in an official listing is not a guarantee of availability in every country or on every current device. Before purchasing, verify the exact edition, region, supported hardware and current store status. This matters especially for older games and for a title whose announcement describes a future demo rather than confirming its present release status.
