For an exact mobile-width check or screenshot, start with Chrome DevTools: its responsive viewport accepts custom width and height values and can capture the visible viewport or a full page without an extension. If you want multiple previews, annotations, framed PNGs, or saved device sets, choose an extension for that workflow. These desktop previews help catch responsive-layout issues; they do not prove how a page behaves on every physical device or browser engine.
Choose by the kind of preview you need
- One precise viewport, no install: Use Chrome DevTools Device mode.
- Several sizes side by side, with annotations: Consider Mobile View: Device Emulator & Responsive Tester.
- Custom dimensions with a framed PNG or comparison strip: Consider Responsive View.
- A framed preview with device-profile signals: Consider Mobile View Extension, while keeping its iframe-based approach in mind.
- Saved devices, comparison, or animated captures: Consider Mobile FIRST; its publisher says some advanced features are on optional Pro plans.
These are different workflows, not interchangeable guarantees of native-device behavior. The extension details below reflect their official listings or publisher page, not hands-on testing.

Use Chrome DevTools for a custom-size screenshot
DevTools is the most direct option when you need to set a width and height, inspect a responsive layout, and capture an image without installing an extension. Chrome opens Device mode with a responsive viewport; you can drag its edges or enter dimensions. The custom-device settings can also include device-pixel ratio (DPR), user-agent string, and device type.

Select the device-toolbar toggle to enter Device mode; Chrome’s guide explains the control and workflow in Simulate mobile devices with device mode.
- Choose the responsive viewport option, then enter the width and height you want or drag the viewport to size it. Rotate the viewport if you need to inspect the other orientation.
- For a screenshot, open the DevTools command menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.
Dimensions are useful for breakpoint checks, but a viewport-only screenshot is not a full device test. Device mode can approximate selected device characteristics; the result still runs in desktop Chrome.

Chrome extensions for multiple views and captures
Install an extension only if it adds something you need beyond DevTools. A screenshot format, comparison layout, or emulation method can matter more than the number of device presets.
Mobile View: Device Emulator & Responsive Tester
The Chrome Web Store listing describes up to four side-by-side views, custom viewport sizes, synchronized scrolling and supported interactions, saved device sets, screenshot capture, and annotations. It says processing is local and that screenshots, references, and annotations are not uploaded. Its listing also notes that the websites you open still make their normal network requests, and that sign-in or embedding rules may prevent a site from appearing in a preview. The extension uses Chrome rather than physical devices or Safari. Listing metadata recorded September 12, 2026, showed version 0.2.9; version and store details can change. The listing describes phone, tablet, desktop, and custom width-by-height sizes, live resizing with dimensions, orientation changes, framed PNG capture, and a side-by-side comparison strip. Its two modes are an important distinction: Frame renders a frame-based preview, while Emulate is described as Chrome debugger-protocol device emulation, including touch, DPR, and mobile user agent. The publisher says the extension runs locally. Its listing showed version 1.2.0 and an update date of July 17, 2026; those are listing details, not a quality rating. Mobile View Extension – View website as mobile
This extension’s listing describes Apple and Android presets, a generic custom viewport frame, orientation switching, and PNG capture. It says the preview is iframe-based rather than native DevTools or Chrome debugger-protocol emulation. Its description says it adjusts selected signals such as viewport and JavaScript screen dimensions, orientation, DPR, touch-point profile, user agent, and supported client hints; selected physical dimensions are converted to CSS viewport dimensions using the chosen DPR. That can suit a framed preview, but it is not equivalent to testing on a physical phone. See the Chrome Web Store listing.

Mobile FIRST’s publisher describes custom saved devices, side-by-side comparisons, transparent PNG captures, and WEBM, GIF, or MP4 recording. What a desktop mobile preview can and cannot tell you
A custom viewport is useful for finding layout breaks at a particular width and height: overflowing content, awkward navigation, or elements that no longer fit. Side-by-side views can make differences between sizes easier to spot, while annotations or captures can help communicate an issue.

But a Chrome preview is not proof that a site works identically on a physical device, Safari, or another browser engine. An iframe or framed viewport can also behave differently from a debugger-protocol emulation mode. For final compatibility checks, test the relevant real devices and browsers. A site’s sign-in or embedding rules may also block an extension preview.

- The page does not load inside an extension: The site may require sign-in or disallow embedding. Try DevTools Device mode, or inspect the page directly in a browser on the target device.
