For most full-size charcoal grills, the Weber Rapidfire Chimney Starter, model 7416, is the best-documented choice. Weber lists it at 1.6 gallons, holding approximately 5.7 pounds of standard briquettes, and it includes a heat shield and a flip-up helper handle for pouring. If your grill is small, you tailgate, or you need to store the starter inside a compact grill, Weber’s Rapidfire Compact, model 7447, is the smaller alternative.
These are manufacturer-backed recommendations. I found no independent side-by-side testing of these models, so treat them as well-specified options rather than a verdict from a lab or reviewer. The sections below explain how to choose a size, light the charcoal safely, and read the readiness cues that matter more than any printed minute count.

What a chimney starter does
A chimney starter is a steel cylinder with a open bottom and a handle. You fill it with charcoal, place an ignition source underneath, and let the heat rising through the stack light the charcoal from the bottom up. Because the fire is contained and airflow is concentrated, the charcoal catches without you having to soak it in lighter fluid. That matters for flavor and for the way the grill behaves once you start cooking.

Choosing a size
The main question is how much charcoal your grill needs for the cook you have in mind. Weber’s two Rapidfire models differ in both capacity and footprint, as the table shows.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed to quickly produce hot coals for cooking
- 7.5 in. In diameter, 13 in. High
- Specialized cone-shaped grate
- Durable construction for longevity
- Ergonomic handle for comfortable use
| Feature | Rapidfire Chimney Starter (model 7416) | Rapidfire Compact (model 7447) |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use (per Weber) | Full-size charcoal grills | Smaller grills, tailgating, storage inside a compact grill |
| Listed capacity | 1.6 gallons, about 5.7 lb of standard briquettes (Weber US product page, accessed 2026) | Not stated in the reviewed Weber US listing |
| Listed dimensions | 12.5 × 8.1 × 12.7 inches (Weber US product page) | 8 × 5.8 × 10.4 inches (Weber US compact listing) |
| Heat shield and flip-up helper handle | Yes, per Weber US product page | Not stated in the reviewed Weber US listing |
If your grill takes a modest load, the compact model keeps the starter out of the way. If you cook large batches or want to sear over a full bed of coals, the full-size model reduces the number of loads you need to pour. A smaller starter can still work, but you may need to light more than one batch to reach the same fuel level, and each batch adds time and handling.
Choosing an ignition source
Weber documents two options for the fire beneath the chimney. Neither is mandatory, and the choice mostly comes down to what you already keep in the house.
Newspaper
Crumpled newspaper placed on the charcoal grate is the traditional option. It is cheap and easy to find, and it burns long enough to catch the charcoal above it.
Rank #2
- COMPACT STARTER - MEASURES 8.1 x 5.7 x 10 INCHES: This chimney starter is intentionally compact, measuring 8.1 inches wide by 5.7 inches deep by 10 inches tall. Designed for small to medium sized grills. Not a full-sized chimney - check dimensions
- LIGHTS CHARCOAL FASTER THAN LIGHTER FLUID - GRILL SOONER: This compact chimney starter cuts the time from match to meal by getting charcoal ready to cook on faster than lighter fluid methods. Charcoal lights quickly and evenly for faster heat-up
- HEAT SHIELD AND STAY-COOL HANDLE FOR HAND PROTECTION: Built with a heat shield and stay-cool handle to keep your hands protected from heat while lighting. A safer, more comfortable lighting experience than handling hot charcoal directly
- DURABLE ZINC STEEL CONSTRUCTION - RUST-RESISTANT AND LONG-LASTING: Made from heavy-duty, rust-resistant zinc steel for durability grill after grill. Kingsford construction that holds up across multiple grilling seasons without deteriorating
- NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED - ARRIVES READY TO USE: Your Kingsford chimney starter arrives fully assembled and ready to use right out of the box. No setup time, no missing parts - take it from the package and start grilling at your next cookout
Lighter cubes
Grill lighter cubes are a convenience product that burns steadily and requires only a match or lighter to start. Weber describes them as optional, so you do not need to buy them to use the starter.
How to light a charcoal chimney starter
The sequence below follows Weber’s documented method. Read the instructions printed with your specific starter and grill before your first use, because layouts and grate designs vary.
- Remove the cooking grate from the grill so the charcoal grate is exposed.
- Place newspaper or lighter cubes on the charcoal grate. Do not use self-lighting charcoal in the chimney.
- Fill the chimney with standard charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal.
- Set the chimney on the charcoal grate, directly over the ignition source. Weber’s support guidance says to light the chimney on a charcoal grate, not on concrete or another surface.
- Light the ignition source and wait. Watch the top layer of coals rather than the clock (see the timing section below).
- When the top coals begin to turn gray with ash, use a protective mitt and, on the Rapidfire 7416, the flip-up helper handle with two hands, to pour the coals evenly into the grill.
- Arrange the coals for direct or indirect cooking, then move the hot chimney to a safe spot away from people and pets.
How long it takes
Two Weber sources give different timing estimates. Both are manufacturer guidance, and neither is an independent measurement. Use them as expectations, not guarantees.

- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Galvanized steel charcoal chimney with insulated cool-touch plastic handle and large vent hole for safe, comfortable handling
- VERSATILE FIRE STARTER: Ideal for igniting coals or wood for charcoal grills, barbecues, fire pits, and outdoor cooking activities
- PRODUCT DIMENSIONS: Measures 10.8 x 6.7 x 10.8 inches (LxWxH)
| Source | Estimate | Readiness cue |
|---|---|---|
| Weber, “How To Use A Charcoal Chimney Starter” (US instructional article, accessed 2026) | About 10–15 minutes, depending on weather | Top coals begin to turn gray with ash |
| Weber, Charcoal Grill Owner’s Guide (PDF, dated approximately 2024 in the search listing) | 15–20 minutes | A coating of white ash means the coals are fully lit |
The gap between these estimates is most likely explained by weather, ambient temperature, and how fully you want the coals lit before pouring, though neither Weber source spells that out. Judge readiness by the appearance of the coals. Pour when the top layer is gray, and wait longer if you need a fully lit bed.
Safety when the chimney is hot
The chimney stays hot after you pour, and Weber recommends wearing gloves when handling it. Weber’s support guidance also calls for a protective mitt during pouring and for setting the hot chimney down somewhere people and pets cannot reach it. Keep the starter on the charcoal grate while lighting, never on concrete, and never use self-lighting charcoal in it.

Weber’s charcoal grill owner guide states: “The simplest, most thorough way to light any kind of charcoal is to use a chimney starter; particularly, the WEBER RAPIDFIRE chimney starter (sold separately).” That is Weber’s own statement about its product, not the finding of an independent test.

Weber’s product pages describe the construction of both models and list retail prices. Those details tell you what the product is, but they do not establish how long it lasts or whether it offers better value than a competing starter. Prices and availability change, so check Weber’s US product pages for current figures before you buy. Customer reviews displayed on those pages are anecdotal and do not indicate how often the product fails.
