The TP-Link Archer AX55 is the best-supported cheap standalone Wi-Fi router for most homes in this group. It balances Wi-Fi 6 performance, gigabit wired ports and useful range in two separate reviews. If you need a lower-cost basic router, consider the Archer AX10; if you need coverage beyond one router, look at the eero 6 mesh system instead. These picks are not a controlled head-to-head test, and prices vary by seller, region and date.

RTINGS says its tested performance suits service up to about 700 Mbps. [RTINGS] | It is a mesh system, not a direct one-unit router substitute; some advanced features require a subscription. |
Why the Archer AX55 is the strongest all-round pick
RTINGS names the AX55 its best budget router, reporting close-range speeds up to about 750 Mbps and useful performance near 100 feet in its own testing. Tom’s Guide reports a different set of results: 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet, 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet and 89.6 Mbps at 75 feet. These are separate reviewers’ tests under different conditions, not a single combined benchmark. [RTINGS] [Tom’s Guide]

It does not have multi-gig ports, so it is not the right choice if your priority is faster-than-gigabit wired networking. Wi-Fi 6 models in this group also do not offer a 6 GHz band.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
When the other four make more sense
Choose the AX10 for ordinary everyday use
RTINGS reports up to 600 Mbps at close range and solid performance around 100 feet in its AX10 testing. It describes the router as suitable for browsing, downloads and 4K streaming. Its lack of DFS support is the main caveat: in a crowded apartment environment, that can limit channel options. [RTINGS]
Consider the AX21 when the deal is real
TechRadar reported an Amazon price of $59.98 against an $89.99 list price on September 18, 2026, and said the offer was not the router’s all-time low. That is a historical deal observation, not a current price. Check the live listing and seller before treating the AX21 as the cheaper choice. [TechRadar]

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Pick the ASUS RT-AX1800S if its ports and availability suit you
RTINGS positions the RT-AX1800S as its budget ASUS option for browsing, streaming, smart-home devices and simultaneous connections on sub-gigabit plans. It has five 1 Gbps LAN ports as well as its 1 Gbps WAN port, but no 6 GHz band. Confirm the regional SKU before ordering. [RTINGS]
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse eero 6 when coverage matters more than a single-box comparison
A mesh system is designed to expand coverage with additional nodes, making eero 6 a different category of option for a large home or a persistent dead zone. RTINGS describes its range as decent rather than exceptional and notes that ad blocking and content filters require a subscription. [RTINGS]

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
How to choose for your internet plan and home
- Match the router to the plan. A gigabit WAN port can be a constraint for service faster than gigabit; the AX55, AX21 and RT-AX1800S have gigabit wired connections in the cited specifications.
- Think about coverage before advertised speed. Walls, building materials, router placement, nearby networks, traffic and client devices affect actual results.
- Check what your devices support. A Wi-Fi 6 router cannot make an older client device use Wi-Fi 6, and these Wi-Fi 6 picks do not provide 6 GHz.
- Choose mesh for coverage gaps. Additional nodes can extend coverage, but mesh is not equivalent to buying one standalone router and may have different costs and performance trade-offs.
- Verify the exact model and current listing. Regional availability, hardware revisions, seller, stock, firmware support and sale prices can change.
What router speed tests can—and cannot—tell you
Advertised wireless class, reviewer throughput and the speed a household receives are different things. For example, the AX55’s 823.7 Mbps result at 15 feet is a Tom’s Guide test observation at that distance, not a guaranteed speed throughout a home. RTINGS’ AX55 range and speed summary comes from its separate testing setup.
TP-Link says actual wireless throughput, coverage and connected-device counts are not guaranteed, and vary with network conditions, client limitations and environmental factors such as building materials, obstacles, traffic density and client location. [TP-Link]

Should you spend more for Wi-Fi 7?
RTINGS identifies the TP-Link Archer BE230 as a Wi-Fi 7 successor to the AX55, noting higher top speeds and a faster WAN port, while also saying the AX55 has significantly better range and remains more cost-effective for most uses. TechRadar described the BE230 as dual-band Wi-Fi 7 without 6 GHz and with two 2.5Gbps ports; its reported $79.99 Amazon deal is volatile, not a standing price. Consider it if faster-than-gigabit wired connections matter, but the available evidence does not establish it as a universal replacement for the AX55. [RTINGS] [TechRadar]
