A cheap VPN is the one with the lowest total cost for the time you will actually use it, including the first charge, tax, and the renewal price that follows. In the examples below, the best long-term monthly equivalent is three to ten times lower than the standard monthly price, but the monthly plan costs less up front and lets you stop sooner. For most shoppers, the long-term deal is cheaper only if you keep the service past a specific break-even point, which this article works out.
The figures below are as reported by Tom’s Guide on September 30, 2026, and as shown on provider pages viewed on October 7, 2026. They apply to the markets and plan tiers those pages showed at the time and can change without notice.

What “cheap” means on a VPN price page
Two different numbers often sit side by side, and they answer different questions:
- The monthly billing price is what a monthly plan charges each billing period. It is the cost of flexibility.
- The introductory monthly equivalent is the total initial charge on a multi-month or multi-year plan divided by the number of months it covers. It is the cost of commitment.
Those figures should never be compared in isolation. A plan that shows a very low monthly equivalent may still require a large charge today, and the same low figure may not hold after the first term ends. Before comparing providers, write down four values for each option: the total charged at checkout, the number of months that charge covers, whether tax is added, and the renewal price and date.

Reported prices: long-term versus monthly
The Tom’s Guide comparison of cheap monthly VPN plans, published September 30, 2026, lists a lowest per-month figure and a monthly plan figure for each provider below. The comparison does not state the term length behind each long-term figure, so that column is marked accordingly.
| Provider | Lowest reported per-month figure (long-term) | Reported monthly plan price | Initial term behind the long-term figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | $2.99/month | $9.99/month | 24 months (per Proton’s own page; see below) |

Proton’s signup page states: “The specially discounted price of US$71.76 (excl. tax) is valid for the first 24 months.” Divided across 24 months, that equals $2.99 per month, which matches the comparison’s lowest figure for Proton. The same page says renewal pricing is subject to change under Proton’s terms and conditions, so the amount after month 24 is not fixed. The page was viewed on October 7, 2026. NordVPN
NordVPN’s pricing page says subscriptions renew automatically for another term at the then-applicable price unless they are canceled. Its savings figure compares the introductory monthly price, including any extra months offered, with the current monthly price of the annual renewal. In other words, the discount shown is measured against a renewal price that is not the one you pay on day one. The captured material does not state the initial term length or initial charge for the figure in the comparison, so check those on the checkout page.
ExpressVPN
The ExpressVPN order page, as viewed on October 7, 2026, offered Basic, Advanced, and Pro plans on a two-year-plus-four-month term, which is 28 months. Each plan showed a billed total for those initial 28 months and a separate annual auto-renewal amount. The totals are not reproduced here because order-page prices change frequently. The practical point is to record both the initial total and the renewal amount for the tier you choose.

Monthly or long-term: a break-even check
The Proton figures make a useful test case because both numbers come from the same provider and are dated. Using the comparison’s $9.99 monthly price and Proton’s US$71.76 initial charge for 24 months (excluding tax):
- Seven monthly payments cost $69.93, which is less than $71.76.
- Eight monthly payments cost $79.92, which is more than $71.76.
So the monthly plan is cheaper for any stay of about seven months or less. Beyond that, the 24-month term is cheaper, provided you keep the service for the full term. The calculation ignores tax, currency conversion, promotional credits, and any refund if you cancel early. Check the refund terms before choosing a long plan, because an early cancellation can change the result.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
The same arithmetic applies to any provider. Take the initial charge, divide by the monthly price, and compare the result with how long you realistically need the service.
Checkout checklist before you pay
- Confirm the country and currency on the pricing page. Plans, taxes, and promotions vary by market.
- Record the total charged today and the number of months it covers, including any extra months the provider offers.
- Check whether the displayed price excludes tax, and add the tax shown at checkout.
- Find the renewal term, the renewal date, and the renewal price. Note any “subject to change” language.
- Locate the cancellation and refund terms, including how auto-renewal is turned off.
- Confirm the plan tier includes the features you need before comparing its price with a lower tier.
- Run the break-even calculation using your expected length of use.
Non-price factors
Price is only one axis. The Tom’s Guide methodology says its rankings also weigh privacy, streaming performance, and ease of use. The comparison does not provide evidence that would rank these providers on those factors, so the price table above should not be read as a quality ranking. If you rely on streaming access or a specific privacy feature, verify it for your own services and location, and use a refund window where the provider offers one.
Choosing a plan
Choose a monthly plan if you need a VPN for a short trip, are testing a service, or are not sure you will stay past the break-even point. Choose a long-term plan if you expect to use the service for longer than that point, can accept the renewal price when it arrives, and have confirmed the refund and cancellation terms. In both cases, the decision should rest on the total you will pay for your actual period of use, not the headline monthly figure.
