Can you navigate Android with a Bluetooth controller?
Sometimes. Android supports non-touch ways to move among interface elements, and its compatibility documentation defines gamepad inputs. Those are not guarantees that every Android screen or app will respond to every gamepad.

Google’s Android 8.0 Compatibility Definition says a device must include an input mechanism, “such as a touchscreen or non-touch navigation, to navigate between the UI elements.” That is a platform requirement for navigation input; it does not say that a game controller can operate every part of the system UI. A controller working in a game is not proof that it will work in Settings or another app.
A physical D-pad is a practical feature to look for because it can send directional input when an interface exposes focusable items. Whether focus moves as expected depends on the device, Android version, launcher, screen, and app.

Bluetooth controllers to consider
These models have manufacturer-documented Android compatibility, but the documentation does not establish universal touchscreen-free system navigation. Compare the Android version listed by the manufacturer, Bluetooth support, and the physical controls; then confirm behavior in your own setup.

The Pro 3 is the clearest starting point if you want a documented minimum Android version and a tactile D-pad, provided your device runs Android 13 or later. The SN30 Pro for Android is explicitly described for Android devices and supported games, but its cited FAQ does not give a minimum Android version. The Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller – Xbox Edition adds a phone-fitting design for mobile play; that design is not evidence of better navigation outside games.

How to pair and adjust a controller
- Put the controller into its Bluetooth pairing mode, following its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On Android, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
- Select the controller when it appears. If it connects but does not navigate the screen you need, treat that as an interface-compatibility issue—not proof that pairing failed.
- For a connected Bluetooth controller, check the controller settings under Connected devices. Where supported, Android’s settings let you swap the assignments of two buttons or swap the left and right joystick assignments.
Google documents this pairing and controller-settings guidance in its Android Help instructions. Menu names and the availability of customization can vary with the device and its Android version.

What to check before buying or relying on one
- Android version: Check the manufacturer’s stated requirement against the version installed on your device, especially for the Pro 3 and Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller – Xbox Edition, which list Android 13.0 and above.
- Your actual screens: Try directional movement and selection in the launcher, Settings screens, and apps you need to operate without touch. A successful test in one app does not confirm another.
- Focus behavior: Check that directional input moves focus to the controls you need and that the available buttons can activate them. Some interface elements may not expose focus in a useful way.
- Remapping needs: Check whether controller settings are available on your device and whether their options suit your workflow. Remapping a button does not make an otherwise unsupported screen navigable.
- Handheld design versus navigation: A telescopic phone grip can help hold a phone during play, but it does not indicate broader Android system compatibility.
Bottom line
A Bluetooth controller with a D-pad is a reasonable option to try for Android use without a touchscreen, not a dependable universal replacement for touch. Start with a model whose Android requirements match your device, pair it through Connected devices, and confirm that the precise screens and apps you need respond before depending on it.
