If you want to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you need a UHD Blu-ray player—not just a regular Blu-ray player. UHD players can also play standard Blu-ray discs, but support for DVDs, CDs, SACDs, 3D Blu-ray and imported discs varies by model. For most buyers who want broad HDR support, the Panasonic DP-UB820 is the strongest all-rounder to consider; the Sony UBP-X700 is a budget-oriented alternative with wide older-disc support but no HDR10+.

Best 4K Blu-ray players to consider

These models serve different needs. Check the exact model and regional version before buying: features and availability may vary, and current local prices and stock are not established here.

Player Why consider it Important checks
Panasonic DP-UB820 TechRadar’s guide, updated 28 August 2026, reports support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ and identifies it as a strong all-round player based on its testing. Panasonic lists it as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Panasonic specifications; TechRadar guide. Confirm the regional model and stock. Panasonic specifies a high-speed HDMI cable capable of 18 Gbps for 4K/60p. Panasonic specifications.
Sony UBP-X700 Sony lists UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD playback, plus 4K upscaling, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. It is a useful option if you want to play a range of older discs as well as UHD discs. Sony product page. TechRadar reports that it lacks HDR10+ and notes that its Dolby Vision setting may need toggling. Check your TV’s HDR support and the exact model suffix. TechRadar guide.
LG UBK90 (Australian regional example) An Australian LG product sheet lists UHD Blu-ray and older disc formats, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and upscaling. LG product sheet. The sheet is dated May 2018, so it does not establish current availability. It lists Blu-ray Region B and DVD Region 4 for that Australian version. Do not assume other regional versions have identical features. LG product sheet.

Do you need a special Blu-ray player for 4K?

Yes, if you mean 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. UHD Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray are different formats: a UHD-capable player is required for UHD discs, while a regular Blu-ray player cannot play them. A UHD player can play standard Blu-ray discs, according to TechRadar’s guide.

Upscaling is different from playing a UHD disc. A player may scale lower-resolution content for a 4K television, but that does not turn the source into native 4K. Sony says 4K upscaling and output require a compatible 4K display and HDMI cable. Sony UBP-X700 specifications.

Check that it plays the older discs you own

“Blu-ray player” does not promise support for every kind of optical disc. Look up the precise model’s official disc list and compare it with your collection. Sony’s UBP-X700 page, for example, lists UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD; that list is specific to this model, not a guarantee for all UHD players. Sony product page.

  • Standard Blu-ray and DVD: Check that both appear in the specification if you own either format.
  • CD or SACD: Confirm each format explicitly; don’t infer audio-disc support from Blu-ray playback.
  • 3D Blu-ray: Check the player and TV specifications if you have 3D discs and equipment.
  • Imported discs: Verify Blu-ray and DVD region compatibility separately. UHD branding does not mean older discs are region-free.

The regional differences can be significant: LG’s May 2018 Australian UBK90 sheet specifies Blu-ray Region B and DVD Region 4 for that version. Check the code on your discs and the exact player sold in your country. LG Australia product sheet.

Check the HDMI path to the 4K TV

For 4K output, the player needs a suitable connection to the display. If video passes through an AV receiver or soundbar, that device must also support pass-through for the video signal and formats you intend to use.

  • Panasonic specifies a high-speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps for 4K/60p on the DP-UB820. Panasonic specifications.
  • Sony says 4K output and upscaling require a compatible display and HDMI cable. Sony UBP-X700 specifications.
  • If your receiver or soundbar is in the signal path, check its manual for compatible 4K video pass-through. If it cannot pass the video signal you need, see whether the exact player and receiver support a separate HDMI audio connection; verify the connection method in both manuals.

A new cable is not automatically necessary. Replace or upgrade the cable only if the one you have cannot support the intended connection, such as the DP-UB820’s specified 4K/60p path.

A quick buying checklist

  1. Decide which discs you need to play. If you own UHD Blu-rays, choose a UHD-capable player. List your other formats—Blu-ray, DVD, CD, SACD or 3D Blu-ray—and verify each one in the specifications.
  2. Check the exact regional model. Compare the official specification page and model suffix for the version sold where you live, especially if you watch imported Blu-rays or DVDs.
  3. Match HDR formats. Check the player’s HDR formats against the TV’s supported formats rather than relying on “4K” alone.
  4. Confirm the full HDMI route. Check the cable, TV input and any receiver or soundbar for the video mode you want. Consult both device manuals if you plan to route audio separately.
  5. Compare local buying terms. Check current price, stock, warranty and return policy in your market; these details are not established consistently for the models above.
